Deciding on purchase | | Hi, I'm new to the community and would like to try a BBB, but I'm not quite ready to shell out on a MP. I was wondering if there is a significant difference between JP's and Denmans brushes the Denman's are about $10 cheaper. I have 1a/F/ii hair that's been color treated and I like my hair to be straight with a little bit of a curl under at the end, so I was looking at the JP Classique round brush to do that, it says it's for straightening as well as styling. Don't plan on blowdrying, just comb and as soon as my hair dries, try to brush into place. I've never used a round before though and don't want to end up w/hand cramps due to constant twirling of my hair, so was also considering the Prestige. Any suggestions? Thanks. Deciding on purchase | | Hi Gaijin, welcome to LHC!! I have a Phillips Classic BBB. It's a flat paddle brush with a rubber cusion under the bristles. I love it. And it was just at $10. I bought it at Sally's Beauty Supply, but I don't know if there are any in Japan. There HAS to be someone here that would know if the round ones do a good curl. __________________ Why can't I wake up with my hair like this?? I don't think round brushes are the best choice for long hair since they have a higher risk of getting tangled in your hair (been there, done that, ouch). Especially if you don't need one for heat styling. Denman brushes are a totally different matter cause they have nylon bristles. I use my brush for sebum distribution, scalp massage and follicle stimulation, and boar bristles do that best job at that. For detangling and styling I use combs only. __________________ Cheers, Madeleine, G.F.T.G. *g* Fontaine de Vaucluse, France, October 2004 | | | March 31st, 2004, 06:17 AM | #4 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Aug 2003 Posts: 1,071 | | Re: BBB-Which brand? Deciding on purchase | | Hi Gaijin, Welcome. I have two favorites: 1.The Softee Soft Pure Boar Bristle Hair Brush http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=2972579 341 Accolady reccomended the Softee & I love it, very, very gentle, plus you can't beat the price. 2. My second favorite is the Kent LC22. It is a stiffer bristle but very good for stimulating blood flow to the scalp. Hope this helps. hugs, Rhiannon | | | March 31st, 2004, 06:59 PM | #5 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Sipping Darjeeling with Jesus and LisaJaney Age: 47 Posts: 3,307 Length: 24/45/?? Type: 2a/2b/M/ii | | Re: BBB-Which brand? Deciding on purchase | | Well, my first BBB was a $10 Conair Professional that I bought at the drug store. They work for some people, but mine gave me more splits. Bye-bye brush. My second BBB was a JeanPierre Prestige pure BBB. An excellent brush, no increased split ends, and much more economical than a Mason Pearson. That said, I recently purchased a purse-sized MP.....And now I'm wondering how much money I can save and how quickly I can save it (it would help if you people would stop showing us your new hairtoys. ::ahem:: ) so I can buy the Large Extra MP. I must say I was surprised at the difference between the JP and the MP, because I really liked my JP. I also am surprised that I'm even considering spending so much money on a hairbrush! The JP is a Cadillac, but the MP is a Rolls-Royce. __________________ | | | March 31st, 2004, 07:26 PM | #6 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Near Detroit, Michigan Age: 37 Posts: 3,915 Length: 3/36+/36-40 Type: 2a/2b/F/M/ii | Re: BBB-Which brand? Then I got home and she said she didn't really want one. I have used mine a few times and since I don't have experience with BBB I can't say whether its good or not but I couldn't pay more than $9-10 anyway at this time. I don't have any complaints so far. As long as the bristles don't fall out. I was looking at the other ones they had and they looked like they had bristles falling out. So I got the Phillips Classic-1 __________________ This is before and after April 4th, 2007 Trim. Deciding on purchase | | Thanks so much for everyone's replies! That Phillips Classic was very appealing to me and there are actually quite a few locations in Japan, just not anywhere near the remote location where I live, and I don't know when I'll be able to get around to Tokyo or Sendai. The Softee wasn’t on e-bay anymore, maybe it was sold. The Kent LC22 looked nice also, but the Prestige is cheaper than the Kent, so I’m going to go ahead and purchase the “Cadillac” brush of the Prestige. Oh how I wish I was more conveniently located! Denman also makes boar bristle brushes for cheaper. $16.99 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=3760931&s=hpc That one looks like it might be pretty good also. | | | April 1st, 2004, 12:42 AM | #8 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Hamburg, Germany Age: 39 Posts: 3,675 Length: Pixie/32.5"/37" Type: 1c/F/i | | Re: BBB-Which brand? I have a JP and love it, but ever since I got a MP polpular mixed bristle as a gift for someone last Christmas and had a chance to get my hands on a variety of those brushes (at Harrod's in London, no less) I'm wondering just how much nicer a MP BBB might feel on my head. The small extra, probably. I'll end up in the poorhouse, but I'll be pretty! __________________ Cheers, Madeleine, G.F.T.G. *g* Fontaine de Vaucluse, France, October 2004 | | | April 1st, 2004, 05:27 AM | #9 | | Administrator Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Idaho-ho-ho Age: 49 Posts: 10,168 Length: 4"/39.9"/40+"? Type: 2a/F/ii | | Re: BBB-Which brand? Deciding on purchase | | I have the Large Extra and it's a beautiful thing. And I ADORE it. I also have that $10 BBB from Sally's and it's moderate, but not nearly stiff enough, frankly. I touched each one and got the STIFFEST bristles possible, and I did this AFTER seeing/touching the JP Prestige. I have not USED, but have seen the JP Prestige (Madeline's came to my house on it's way to hers, so it could ride along with some satin pillowcases, so I got to see her brush) and it's quite nice. But the MP just makes me drool, it's THAT good. I LOVE my MP, and would spend the money all over again. Look on eBay to get a bargain, or if you have a friend in England who would buy it for you......... (they're cheaper there than they are here in the States; I am assuming they'll be cheaper on England than they are in Japan, too) I ONLY know one thing about the Denman BBBs (and bear in mind that I own and LOVE about 7 Denman traditional styling brushes -- the rubber-based head-full-of-pins kind, so I have this love-affair going on with Denman.) BUT: One of our ladies ordered a Denman BBB this last group-order, and I got to see her BBB-with-nylon-pins and I thought "Gee, those look kinda sharp" (the nylon pins). I should have said something. She used it and it literally scratched the heck out of her scalp. So much so, that she had to apply ointments (Tea Tree Oil, actually) to her scalp and she was miserable for a time. She melted the nylon tips a bit and that helps, but now she's back to the ball-tipped bristles. Anyhow, I would suggest AVOIDING the Denman BBB that has the rubber-cusion base with the white nylon pins in there to give it more body. Since owning a MP, I can easily say that if you are wanting to "get through, clear through to the SCALP", and the boar-bristles are soft enough that they need nylon pins to get the pentration, UPGRADE and get a better brush. Hope this is helpful. | | | April 1st, 2004, 09:00 AM | #10 | | Moderator Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: In the closet with Mothra Posts: 6,122 Length: 26"/33.5"/39.5" Type: 2b/F/ii | | Re: BBB-Which brand? The best prices on MP bbbs are here: http://www.hubintsecured.co.uk/acatalog/Hair_Brush.html (scroll down 'til you see them) At the current rate of exchange, the Ex-lg is about US$79.00 and EUR64.60. Less for the Sensitive model, which is my favorite. And for US, hairbrushes are duty free items. | | | April 1st, 2004, 12:05 PM | #11 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Sipping Darjeeling with Jesus and LisaJaney Age: 47 Posts: 3,307 Length: 24/45/?? It just feels better going through my hair, and it is good for oil distribution, because I can be all fly-away, but a nice brushing with the MP and it's all smooth and shiny again. I got my MP brush and detangling comb on e-bay from this seller (vendist). I had no problems with the seller, and his feedback rating is 100%. Deciding on purchase | | Howdy! I have two - very different and both very wonderful, and what's more, neither broke the bank. Fuller men's soft brush for thinning hair - just because it's so gentle and my hair is fine - $35? Can't remember. But worth it. I just went to the main Fuller site. GM curved brush - curve goes with the head, and the bristles are stiff. This one's for digging into the scalp. $15 from Enchantress www.enchantress.com I usually use both at the same time - start the swathe with the GM and finish it with the Fuller. Whatever you get, I know it's exciting! | | | April 2nd, 2004, 11:12 AM | #14 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Sipping Darjeeling with Jesus and LisaJaney Age: 47 Posts: 3,307 Length: 24/45/?? You know, I was thinking about you when I wrote that, "She's going to kill me. We both loved our JPs!" I'm still waiting to hear from that site regarding shipping, but I definitely see a Large MP in my future. I've been doing my nightly brushing with my tiny little purse MP! The bristles actually do make it through my hair to my scalp better than the JP. ::sigh:: We'll be poor and pretty together! __________________ | | | April 2nd, 2004, 12:38 PM | #15 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Near Detroit, Michigan Age: 37 Posts: 3,915 Length: 3/36+/36-40 Type: 2a/2b/F/M/ii | Re: BBB-Which brand?
