I read on--Steph, good for you for moving that Mothering magazine up front. I can't believe it was censored because people had the nerve to make complaints about it! No one complains when Maxim or some such thing is on display (pun intended) I hereby vow to breastfeed in public as often as I can! Yeah, I'll probably be too shy to do it, but I'm going to try! __________________ | | | January 24th, 2004, 01:44 PM | #5 | | Moderator Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Central Tejas Age: 49 Posts: 12,727 Type: 2b/2c/F/i | I love those pictures, Steph!!! Thanks for sharing them with us! (and I peaked at your blog! ) Applauds for moving the magazines, too! You go girl! | | | January 25th, 2004, 03:08 AM | #6 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Jul 2003 Posts: 739 | Cool! And look at that double chin! And you worried he wasn't fat enough . . . And I breastfeed in public. I consider it my job to be a modest a possible and it everybody else's job to look the other way. Resturants, shoe stores, playgrounds, Target (I usually go to the dressing room to sit down--little pig weighs 25+ lbs.!) I've never had any trouble. Probably because I look completely confident and comfortable doing it. The Mothering Magazine thing really ticked me off. You're absolutely right! Not only do the men's magazines all feature naked women (or mostly), but the WOMEN'S mags do too! Cosmo is probably one of the worst "offenders." And when a woman is showing much LESS than that, but has a baby attached everyone gets all uptight. It's so lame, especially since it's so healthy. I could go on... Along the same lines, you know? I was way too shy to breastfeed in public just a few months ago, but when my mom and I ate at the Olive Garden once a while back, a woman was sitting at a large family gathering nursing her baby. No one was uncomfortable and the entire family was just talking, laughing and eating (huge family!). That visual gave me the push I needed and have been doing it everywhere ever since. Somewhat modestly, because I don't like to expose my breasts to strangers but whever Jake's hungry, he has food. Scarlett, you're so right. I saw that picture and it put all of my worries to rest. Sometimes I'm just a neurotic mom. LOL Thanks for the kind words everyone! Jake says thanks too. | | | January 25th, 2004, 11:54 AM | #9 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Oakland, CA Age: 36 Posts: 2,272 Length: pixie/chin/40" Type: 1c/M/ii | I always made a point of nursing in public. I once sat on the fountain in the MIDDLE of our mall nursing the baby. It could have been a sociological study- just fascinating. I nursed during meetings (I worked from home), I nursed at the beach and at the gym. I quickly decided it was WAY too much trouble to try to cover the baby with a blanket, so I usually just hitched up my shirt. No one ever gave me *overt* trouble, but I sure did get some strange looks. The only time I really got upset about someone's reaction was one night when one of our oldest friends came to see the baby. He's a very laid back, hippy kind of guy and he would not look at me or talk to me until I stopped nursing. I'm talking for an hour he talked to my husband. That made me furious, but otherwise I just figured I was providng a public service (kind of like a bilboard ) and even if someone was offended, at least I got them thinking about breastfeeding. Of course, as she got older she would pull off every 4 minutes to look around and talk to people. At that point I decided we would just nurse at home | | | January 25th, 2004, 12:38 PM | #10 | | Administrator Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Sometimes next to Canada. Sometimes next to Texas. Posts: 2,685 Length: 10/26/33 Type: 1b/F/ii | LOL Lexy! Jake loves to pop off and "talk" to people as they walk by. I agree, if I can make a good impression on someone, ANYONE, by breastfeeding in public (like the lady at the olive garden did with me), I'm going for it. I've also found that I don't like to use the nursing blanket. It just gets in the way and it's really nothing to hide, anyway! But then again, they have served useful to keep the distraction away from buglet so he can actually eat something instead of ripping my nipple off. On another note, I would be absolutely furious at your friend, too!!! It's unfortunate that society (in general -- not all places) looks down on something so natural and beautiful (not to mention HEALTHY). | | | January 25th, 2004, 12:45 PM | #11 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Oakland, CA Age: 36 Posts: 2,272 Length: pixie/chin/40" Type: 1c/M/ii | I can't remember any of the particulars anymore, but a news story broke while I was still nursing about a nursing mother who was asked to leave a Burger King. She got up and left and then returned three day later with eleven friends and their babies. They all sat and nursed and NO ONE gave them ANY trouble e: | | | January 25th, 2004, 01:01 PM | #12 | | Administrator Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Sometimes next to Canada. Burger King has since changed their 'policy'. __________________ Why can't I wake up with my hair like this?? But I found if it made somebody else uncomfortable I became uncomfortable about it. If I was at home and we had visitors.......Well too bad for you........ I did alot of nursing in the car in parking lots. I found using the sling when the babies were really small useful for nursing. You could push a cart and shop and nurse all at the same time. Good for you Steph about the magazines.... Oh, when I had my second (dd) my first (ds) announced to his kindergarden class that his baby sister drinks milk from moms boobs. Then apparently a whole bunch of others in his class piped up and said their siblings did too... The tearcher told us this on meet the teacher night. __________________ Frank Zappa "I wrote a song about dental floss but did anyone's teeth get cleaner?"
