What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

For me it was about right as it started sitting on my shoulders (layers made it impossible to put up). That is when I would always get the itch to cut and usually did. If I let it get a little longer it still bothered me really because it was so "wide" because my hair is so thick. Layers did not help except maybe initially but after a few weeks it would be even worse.

Well FINALLY my hair is going DOWN instead of sideways! It is true that the curls are more waves now because of the weight but I am SO happy that I got past the point of frustration to the point where I am no longer wanting to cut because of that!
I am thinking most people's most frustrating time is about that length (shoulderish) but maybe it is different for some depending on thickness, texture, wave etc.

Anxious to hear your stories!

Long enough to get in my eyes but too short to be put up. Oh, the horror!

This one:

That hair is totally natural, air-dried. Finding something decent to do with it every day was a challenge, to put it mildly.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

I would say my current length (a little bit longer than shoulder). It doesn't look good wearing down any more and I'm not very good at updos so I keep it in a pony tail all the time. I cant wait for it to get longer so I can start wearing it down again. And I probably should learn some new updos...

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

I've had several maddening stages during the many times I've grown it out.....

1. Between short all over (1") and shoulder length.

2. Between shoulderblades and bsl

3. Then it got to my waist and was too heavy and I didn't know how to do good updos so I permed it, that was a big mistake, and then chopped it!

Aherm......not this time! This time I'll enjoy getting it longer than waist and keeping it natural! I will say that now I'm starting to get used to the length it is, once it gets a few more inches on it it'll probably go back to being a pain. It's just a process with my hair.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

BSL used to be maddening for me. I always grew it to bsl then chopped it. Due to my waves and the way I cared for it and I'm sure the thickness it was EVERYWHERE. I'd constantly look like I needed to brush my hair, I'd brush my hair and until I moved it was pretty - then POOF it was everywhere. This time, thanks to LHC, I got past bsl and didn't chop, but a brush hasn't touched my hair in over a year. I learned my hair isn't straight, and no matter how much I tried to convince it; it'll never be straight.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

Definitely an outgrowing "short all over"-cut when its long enough to get into the eyes and into the mouth on windy days, but is still too short to put the bangs behind the ears or do something else with it.
Luckily my hair grows fast, so this annoying state was relatively short, about 2 months I think ( long time ago). And hats, caps, headbands, bandana, buff and so on helped a lot.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

I haven't had really short hair since I was about 11, but I can remember it being awkward getting rid of the layers, and getting it to shoulder length. It was a horrible haircut to grow out. It took more than a year, maybe two. Ever since then I've worn my hair longer. My hair has been waist length or longer for years, now. My most recent trim last week (to even up the ends of my hair) brought my hair back to waist length.

My mom has also been growing her hair. A year ago she had a very short hairdo, and she has been growing it out ever since. Now her hair is mostly shoulder length, and she can wear it in a ponytail. She went through the awkward stage between really short hair, and shoulder length. She wore headbands alot.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

Everything before shoulder length was really horrible for me, especially if it was too short to stay behind my ears when I hooked it there. I am now growing out some hunks of overcut bangs and it was a happy, happy day when they would finally stay behind my ears if I put them there!

Hair that falls in your eyes all the time and is too short to wear it up.

Same as Igor...too short to be put up, long enough to get in your face and bother you!

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

Anything before shoulder length was bad. My hair doesn't get curly until it gets longer - at short lengths it just sticks out from my head in a big bushy ball of weird cowlicks and half curls.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

I have 2 stages that don't agree with me. Shoulder length just looks bad unless I blowfry and use a ton of product to control it. I have never liked controling anything expessially my hair.

And BSL to waist. It doesn't stay out of my face. Even the slightest wind would pick it up and throw it everywhere. If I moved it would get caught on things like my underarm. I was so happy the day I didn't have to braid it in the shower any more.

Re: What was the most awkward stage in growing out your hair?

right now - its shoulder length, but its not that part that bothers me - its the 2 stupid face framing layers that are too short to go back in an updo and keep getting in my way!
