Type: 1b/M/ii | | Point of securing hair at night?? | | I've been reading some posts and articles and am wondering what the main reason for people securing their hair at night is. Is it so that it doesn't get tangled? Is it to protect it? Is it just to keep it off their neck? I'd like to keep my hair off my neck this summer for comfort reasons, but I just can't imagine having all my hair so close to my head or with a covering on it. Almost seems like that would make me hot. So, any suggestions for a person that has never been able to sleep with it any way but down?? | | | May 17th, 2007, 11:14 AM | #2 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2006 Age: 42 Posts: 460 Length: 22/29.75/40 Type: 2b/M/C/iii | | Re: Point of securing hair at night?? | | I've been forcing myself to sleep with my hair braided. My hair has gotten to the length that it gets everywhere, so I like keeping it contained. An added benefit is less tangles. I think a lot of people do it to keep damage minimal - I should do it for that reason (then I'd probably do it more often), but I do have a tough time sleeping with it contained. __________________ Blessed are those that give without remembering and receive without forgetting | | | May 17th, 2007, 11:14 AM | #3 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Reading, England Age: 21 Posts: 88 Length: 23/26.5/31(W) Type: 2c/3a/M/C/ii | | Re: Point of securing hair at night?? | | Most people sleep with it up either to protect the hair or for comfort (ie so their hair doesn't strangle them/others in the middle of the night) You could try braid(s) as that won't be concentrated on your scalp but will be tied up. The only advice I can give is to try out lots of different hairstyles and see what works for you. Personally, I have it down the night I wash it on (my curls go ridiculous otherwise) but then I have it either in very high buns, very low buns or buns on the side of my head. I'm sure others will have better advice, but that's my __________________ NO TRIMMING UNTIL 2008! Since I got to BSL I was lying on it, my DH was lying on it so it was pretty annoying. The braid was the perfect thing to keep it restrained and the benefit of it is that it doesn't get tangled much when I comb it in the morning. __________________ Nothing is forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten... I thought my ears would be too cold. Now I sleep with it in a braid and I can't imagine going back to sleeping with it loose. It really helps keep the tangles to a minimum and I can easily fingercomb it the next morning. My hair has a tendency to get dry and tangly, and keeping it contained day and night has really helped it stay healthy. | | | May 17th, 2007, 11:51 AM | #6 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: May 2006 Location: The BSS Age: 27 Posts: 1,086 Type: 4a/4b// | | Re: Point of securing hair at night?? | | I've always been told to tie my hair up at night, so it never occurred to me not to do it. I know for me, tying my hair at night helps its stay detangled (I wash at night) and I know it protects my hair from the harshness of my cotton pillowcase. __________________ Confidence_Personified My journal The_Epitome_of_Glamour My Fotki PM me for PW IMHO, you can never have too much conditioner. ~Proverb from a Product Junkie I daresay one profits more by the mistakes one makes off one's own bat than by doing the right thing on somebody else's advice. ~St. Jerome Those who say it cannot be done should not disturb those who are doing it. ~Chai | | | May 17th, 2007, 12:00 PM | #7 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Oct 2006 Posts: 42 Length: ?/31/? I think the braids are out because I prefer my hair to be as straight as possible and it tends to retain and position it was in for a long time. I can't even tuck behind my ears to do my make-up or I get a funny wave there!!! | | | May 17th, 2007, 12:44 PM | #9 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Ireland Age: 29 Posts: 120 Type: 1b/F/ii | | Re: Point of securing hair at night?? | | Braids are good to do and if you worry about waves the next day, try out some updos. No one will know you have waves! It's the perfect crime! I never used to wear my hair contained at night. But since I've started, I've noticed a drop in tangles and in splits! Also I hate trying to move in the middle of the night and the DBF is lying on it. It makes me feel like I'm paralyzed or something. Of course he is a heavy sleeper and getting him to move off it is a struggle!! | | | May 17th, 2007, 12:50 PM | #10 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Ontario, Canada Age: 50 Posts: 2,597 Length: 22.75/28"/36" Type: 1a/F/ii | | Re: Point of securing hair at night?? | | I usually wear braids at night, but if you are concerned about braid waves the next day, this is another thing I try. I twist my hair into a bun right on top of my head and contain it with a satin scrunchie. When I first take my hair out of the scrunchie, I have waves for about 2 minutes and then it's straight again. Since you have a bit of wave to your hair, I might suggest that you mist your hair after unbunning it, and comb it straight. I've really noticed a difference since I've been braiding or bunning as far as tangles. and also there is far less wear and tear from tossing and turning and having my hair rub against the pillowcase. Good luck! __________________ Franny April 1, 2007--Click “It doesn't matter how long my hair is or what colour my skin is or whether I'm a woman or a man.”--John Lennon | | | May 17th, 2007, 12:52 PM | #11 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Colorado Age: 36 Posts: 2,442 Length: ??/34/36 Type: 1c/F/ii | | Re: Point of securing hair at night?? | | Mine strangles me when I toss and turn. I then goop the braid tassels with shea butter, Fox's conditioning cream, or just coconut oil... I have way less tangles with this, but more fairy knots (I think it's because my hair is layered and so the itty bitty layers get tiny knots in them. As I cut the layers out, I expect to get even less tangles and knots.) Keep my hair restrained, out of my business, so I don't roll on it, so DBF doesn't roll on it, and so it doesn't rub itself all over everything and generate extra splits. I also often go to sleep with wet hair, and wet loose hair in bed dries into the most interesting and fantastic shapes. I toss and turn too much to manage with a high bun; I can't seem to make one that's high enough that it doesn't bother me. I used to ponytail for sleep, but even that is something I can't really do anymore; I tried it last night and woke up multiple times with my hair strangling me, uncomfortably all over my neck, or tangling up in and pulling on my ear pretties (LittleSeven nines; normally I don't leave earrings in as I sleep, but I'm stretching). | | | May 17th, 2007, 01:52 PM | #15 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Upstate NY Age: 24 Posts: 56 Length: ???/32/LONG! I find the most comfortable do to be pigtails, but i like low buns too. If I use oils or leave ins over night, I put a low bun in my hair and cover it with a doubled shower cap.
