How do I know if I have split ends?

My hair is dry and colortreated, but I've never had split ends (except after a really bad 2 process lightening experiment years ago). Each time I get a trim, I always ask if I have any splits and am always told no.

I'm asking though, because I realized I have no idea what they do look like. Perhaps I do have some now? Not sure.

Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

Horrible visual! But useful - "oh look, it's a tree!" - for the Search-And-Destroy-Obsessed.

I think if you don't see them, and your hairdresser doesn't see them, then you might just have a very few! We have lots of hairs on our head and the likelihood of some being split is very great, when they are older (longer) and if you have color treated. But if you don't see them, then you are a very lucky person. Wanna trade?

Thumbs up Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

Flaxen, thank you! Very helpful!

I *may* have the tapering or thickening type.

Yeah, I've got some reasons to really keep an eye out for them.

You have quite pretty hair, so I don't think you should trade yours for anything!

Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

Very cool diagrams.

Anyone know if there's anything you can do for the right angles and crinkles besides cut them off?

If it's just a bend, I've been able to straighten a right angle by wetting it.

Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

I think I have experience of that whole range, Flaxen.

Although they're best done without, I'd not stress too much about splits, BettyLou. They kinda come with the territory in long hair land.

Me, too, at one time or another. Do you know, I actually burst out laughing the first time I saw that chart. It was just too true!

Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

Thanks for that chart, it is really interesting. I have been wondering what a split end has looked like for a couple of days now. I cannot find any in my hair.

Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

I rarely have split ends. Haven't seen one in months and even my hairdresser insures me I don't need to cut more when I ask her.

But I do have extremely dry ends due to chemical treatments.

Re: How do I know if I have split ends?

I get all of those in my hair. I know they're not good, but I find them fascinating all the same. I could spend days doing S&Ds and not get bored. I get some feathers that are just extraordinary (I even save it to show my husband sometimes - yes I know I'm weird).
