What magazines are saying about hair!

Hey! I just got seventeen magazine in the mail today and just about half of the issue was about hair. Im really proud of it (lol) because it suggested using shampoos like VO5 Tea Therapy instead of like the really expensive salon ones. It also suggested using olive oil on your ragged ends to make them look better, mixing honey with your shampoo for softer hair, tea-tree oil for shine, not rubbing your hair with a towel but instead barely putting it against your head and letting it air-dry, mayonnaise for a deep treatment to revive dull hair, not washing your hair every day because it dries it out but if you absolutely have to wash use just conditioner, and using a clarifying shampoo. I'm really excited to see these tips in a popular magazine because I think it's teaching teenagers (like myself) to take better care of their hair!

Re: What magazines are saying about hair!

Those are all very good tips and I am happy to hear that a national fashion mag is publishing them.

But, on the other hand, I would be willing to bet that other articles and features are espousing the use of blow dryers and flatirons to get that "perfect, catch his eye look."

I don't read Seventeen, (for obvious reasons ) but if they run true to form for a national fashion mag, I don't think I am too far off.

Re: What magazines are saying about hair!

lets see... it does talk about using heat your hair, but it does say that if you are going to do it, you should use a heat protecting spray such as VO5 Miracle Mist heat defense conditioning spray or a leave in conditioner. But the thing I think about is, most teenagers that read this magazine aren't really worried about how their hair will look after years of flat-ironing their hair, they are only worried about how it looks now ya know? ALso, I don't think they are trying to grow their hair long. When I was in high school I flat-ironed my hair almost everyday-every other day and yeah, it looked good THEN, but NOW my hair is split-end city (yeah of course when I decide to start taking care of it lol). I was just shocked to see those tips in that magazine!

Hmmm... I never was able to use Sulfates succesfully. Some people can, but I wish they would have discussed the importance of watering down shampoo and trying sulfate free if you have semi-oily sensitive skin.

THat would have saved me YEARS of painful acne and scarring...:frown:

Re: What magazines are saying about hair!

I love Seventeen magazine! I do think the tips are pretty good, but I think that in order to get the healthy hair message across, they need to be more consistent with it, instead of doing "hiar specials" every few months.

Re: What magazines are saying about hair!

I am happy to hear that such a mainstream magazine is giving such poitive information to its readers, especially teens. Their advice may not be perfect, but it is definitely and improvement and that is great! I just hope that they keep up this trend and try to give positive, healthy advice.

Re: What magazines are saying about hair!

That's really cool
I think that even if girls dont have or want long hair, they should at least be clued in to some healthier ways of caring for it than shampooing and brushing and ironing every day!
Most teen magazine's hair tips just have things like "If your hair is curly, try straightening it! Straight, glossy hair is so in! Try this really expensive hot iron with IONS...oooohhh..."and then, in the next paragraph "If your hair is straight, you should try curling it! Curly hair is totally sexy and hot right now! Here, try this expensive hot roller!", and then "if you have damaged hair be sure to condition it a couple times a week."

It's healthier for the environment, too, using mayonnaise and honey, things like that...you have less nasty chemical crap going down your drain and out into the sea.
