Ukers – Cheap Coconut Oil in Supermarket.

I was browsing the ‘World Foods’ isle in Tesco today, and there was a 500g jar of Coconut oil (food grade) for 97p.

If you go looking for it, it looks like this

(Boy, did I get some looks taking that photo)

This is the cheapest I’ve found it in the shops in the UK, so if you’ve been put of trying it because of the high price in some health food shops now’s your chance. I only wish I hadn’t just bought a huge tub for nearly 10 times that from Holland and Barret!

Tesco seem to hair a lot of Indian foods in stock now, this might be dependant on the town you live in, but I’m finding quite a few things that are suitable for hair use very cheap, like a massive jar (about 20cm high) full of fenugreek powder for 99p, castor oil for about £1.50, almond oil available in little bottles for 45p or bigger ones for £1.99.

Thanks for that, Sylph, I'll have a look next time I'm in a big Tesco.

Why, oh why do I live in Tesco free land?!

(edit - just looked at the photo, really shoudl have noticed that first. It's the same stuff I get in my local Chinese supermarket at the same price - phew, back to Tesco hating!)

Re: Ukers – Cheap Coconut Oil in Supermarket.

Does it smell of Coconut? There are 2 tesco's nearish to me but neither of them has that world foods section which is a right pain! The only one i know of is miles away and even in a car probably takes about 45 minutes to get to, plus i don't drive so it's a nightmare! I do want to go there though for that oil, plus i think they do big amounts of spices etc, those little piddly jars that are sold in most spice sections of supermarkets dont last very long and probably work out much more expensive.
I'll check out the one in Lewisham again, it's got a huge ethnic community there so it must have at least some stuff.
Oh i saw that Coconut oil tub in Holland and Barratts too and i was vaguely tempted but i just couldn't justify spending that much on it!

Re: Ukers – Cheap Coconut Oil in Supermarket.

I didn't buy it because I have the *massive* Holland and Barret tub, which I've hardly touched because it cost so much I felt I had to be really spareing with it!

It said '100% coconut' oil on it though, so I think it must be fairly good.

Re: Ukers – Cheap Coconut Oil in Supermarket.

IMO, it's ridiculous that the H&B stuff costs a tenner.

I've been using the Superdrug one which costs 99p but is refined. I can't justify spending £9 more because something is "unrefined".

I will now check Tescos out.

The one pictured is good especially at the price, I don't think it smells of coconut though.

Re: Ukers – Cheap Coconut Oil in Supermarket.

I got the same brand from my local Asian food shop. It cost me £1-10.

No, it doesn't smell of coconut.

Re: Ukers – Cheap Coconut Oil in Supermarket.

Ah, ok, thanks guys. I was hoping it would have a nice coconut smell to it as the superdrug one doesnt either. I just love that smell! So i thought it would be nice. Still very worth the price though.
