Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Does anyone else here sleep with their hair loose, do you find that this gives you more or less tangles in the mornings?

I'm finding that for some reason now my ends get SOO dry, even if I spray a leave in on, maybe it's the way I put my hair when I sleep. Should I braid it? (I tried a ponytail but it's just as dry in the mornings).

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I've tried lots of different things for my hair when I sleep but braiding seems to work the best for me.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Sometimes I wear it in a braid, sometimes in a bun on the top of my head. When I braid it, I'll wake up and be leaning on the braid the wrong way, or pulling it with my elbow, or something wacky like that, so I prefer a bun. I used to sleep with it loose, but I haven't in awhile.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Braiding my hair loosely before bed results in fewer tangles in the morning. I started braiding again before bed about a month ago (because it was finally long enough that I could get some benefit from it! ) and it's made a big difference for me. I also find that when I apply shea butter to the ends and canopy and then braid, I get better results than when I applied the stuff with my hair loose and slept with it loose.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I hear damp braiding and /or damp bunning, maybe with an oil spray on the ends too for extra oomph, can be good, but I can't offer experienced advice as mine isnt long enough to braid yet!

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I can't bear to have my hair braided or tied in any fashion when sleeping, so I wear it loose all night long.

I don't know if this gives me more tangles then if I were to braid it as I could never tolerate a braid in my head at bedtime for longer than 10 minutes.

I can tell you that 3 things help prevent tangles in my loose hair i.e when I don't do one of these 3 things my hair tangles more:

1. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase with dry hair

2. Sleeping on a microfibre towel with damp hair

3. Sleeping on an old Egyptian cotton towel with oiled hair

Hope that helps!

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Sometimes I sleep with my hair loose, I'm just sure to thoroughly detangle first. My scalp is not always in the mood for braiding or wearing a bun.

I do braid, and shea butter or coconut oil on the braid tassel is nice for dryness.

It's so hot right now, that I am using a ficcare to put my hair up in a kind of French Twist, so nothing touches me while I sleep. It also has the side benefit of keeping tangles down, and the ends don't dry out.

There is another thread on this: How to wear hair to sleep poll

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I often do a braid starting right on top of my head. (Learned at LHC)

This seems to leave me with less tangles.

If I'm going to bed with damp hair, I usually plopp it in a kid's t-shirt, which gives my lots of loose spirals in the morning. (Also learned at LHC)

Once and a while I do a scrunchie bun before bed (almost always right on top of my head). (Again learned at LHC)

Sleeping with my hair down worries me because I find a lot of hair on my pillow.

Thanks LHC.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I always braid my hair before I go to sleep. My ends love jojobaoil so I put that on them before I make one braid.I tried sleeping with two braids but it didn't feel good at all.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I go for the "bun on top of head" technique, since I toss and turn a lot. I could pre-oil it but my hair is pretty oily to start with, so I don't.

When I sleep with my hair loose, it would just end up strangling me or caught in my armpits or both! It's not even that long, just past BSL.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Ponytail, but I don't toss and turn much. Satin sheets and pillow cover help prevent tangling and damage.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

I can't stand having my hair in a braid or a bun while I sleep, no matter how loose. It doesn't matter if I have my hair in a brain, a bun, a low ponytail (which I use most of the time), or completely free, I seem to have the same amount of tangles in the morning. Blagh. So I just comb it out as gently as I can, and be on my way.

I tried wrapping a silk square around my hair, but I have yet to find a configuration that works.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Sleeping with it loose is the most comfortable for me. And I like feeling my hair on my body when I'm in bed. It doesn't really tangle too much that way. A braid gives me less tangles but a braid can be quite uncomfortable. I hate laying on that braid bump. A high bun gives me the nicest hair in the morning and also now tangles. But it's very uncomfortable. I would have to lay in one spot and not move all night for this to be a preferred styles for me. The weight of the bun pulls on the scalp hair and I am guessing this would be worse that dealing with a few tangles. The one good thing about this style is that I can wash the night before and have a possibility of wearing my hair down the next day.

Re: Sleeping With Long Hair Advice

Lately I have been putting my hair in a high ponytail with a scrunchie. But on the last go around with the scrunchie, I don't pull it all the way through, so it makes a loop. This has worked the best for me. Not many tangles and it stays pretty well. My hair doesn't stay in a braid when I sleep. It's just not long enough.
