Another one bites the dust for Locks of Love! Did anyone else see this on the 'Today' show this morning?

Didn't see it, but I've notice a lot of people are doing it lately. I saw an bit about it in US weekly or People, one of those types of magazines. It's getting too much press again.

I saw them talking about it this morning and fortunately, I had to go to work before they showed it. Some woman on Entertainment Tonight just had hers cut....but it ended up looking like crap, in my opinion anyway.

Good idea, quiet1. I subscribe to Canadian Living, and a couple of months ago there was an article about donating hair. I never looked into the organizations they mentioned in the article though.

I don't get why donating hair is so fashionable right now. How about donating a kidney instead? It is a much more meaningful gift, and can actually save someone's life!

I'll hang on to my kidneys but I have donated blood and fully intend to do it again. So what if I'm not donating hair? It's not like it's going to save anyone's life.

I didn't see it, but I've seen the haircut on the woman who donated her hair on Entertainment Tonight. Jann Carl is her name, and I think her new haircut looks awful. Here's the news clip from ET's website

Our JANN CARL has a hot new look for summer, but her cropped hairdo will do more than just keep her looking cool.

Jann chopped off her long locks -- her first short haircut in seven years -- to help promote Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides wigs for young people undergoing medical treatments.

To create her new look, she turned to stylist ARRICK ANDERSON (www.arrickhair.com) at Romi Cortier Design. Arrick tells ET a shorter cut is perfect for the warm summer season. "It's easier to take care of," he says. "People don't want to take as much time to fuss with it."

This is one trend Jann says it's great to be part of! She joins KEVIN FEDERLINE and ANN CURRY of the "Today" show, who have also donated their hair to the organization.

Locks of Love has enjoyed amazing growth since it started it's non-profit mission in 1997. In that first year, the organization produced 21 hairpieces. Now, over 1,000 pieces are created per year with recipients in every state across the U.S. and in Canada.

Perhaps most touching is that 80 percent of hair donors are children. Parents looking to get their kids involved in a good cause can send in their donation or use the Locks of Love Web site to find a participating salon.

This is so sad because I loved Diane's hair in Under the Tuscan Sun. While LoL is a good cause, I get so turned off towards it by having complete strangers come up to me and tell me that I should donate my hair. I'm afraid one of them my come after me with a pair of scissors next.

Er... I wouldn't exactly say LOL is a "good" cause. They get a couple thousand donations a week, yet have only made just over a thousand wigs in their entire 10 years of existance, among many other things. If you're curious, just search for locks of love, and you'll come up with dozens of threads about it.

I saw a couple seconds of this in passing this morning. They had the news playing it on one of the TVs in the dining hall, but I didn't actually see the hair being cut. I'd already read this thread, so I was like "UGH! RUN!"

*sigh* I would never cut my hair for LOL, let alone on TV. I wouldn't do it even if I wanted to hack it all off anyway. I wouldn't even cut the hair in private and send it in. My hair is not a part of me to be grown and harvested.

I don't understand why everyone likes cut it all off on TV. I've said something similar before, but I would feel so humiliated.

anyone see this article before? one of the LoL partners kinda spills the beans about how much is donated and how much ends up going to charity/kids.

he says that they get 18,000 pony tails in one week and it take 10-12 tails to make a hair piece. if you do the math the max numbers of wigs they can put out if they use everything for charity is about 72,000 wigs a year, in the article he says that LOL gives out a max of 200 pieces a year. obviously they cant make 72,000 wigs in a year just for charity but the number should still be much higher than 200.

the guy also says "he's thrilled to not have to rely on hair brokers for a steady supply of hair". meaning he uses the donated hair for his for-profit buisness.

the biggest question i have is why does LOL get so much attention when the number people they help is relatively low compared to other charities? even if they did make all the wigs possible to give one to everyone that needed it for a medical condition it would only be in the low thousands, no?

I wonder where they got this information, and if it's accurate. The LoL site is rather ambiguous on the topic, but implies 1000 total, not 1000 per year.
I wonder if the writer of this blurb read their site and interprited it as "1000 per year", or if LoL just has a really poor writer for their own site.
Since they never clarify (on purpose?), I'm inclined to think they've only made 1000 total.

I agree 100% with this statement.
Or blood! Blood is something that "grows back" and could be "harvested" just like hair. Why aren't more people doing that?

Those are some great observations, Daedalus_Dev. What surprises me is that there ins't a countergroup in existence yet! LOL has an illegitimately-good reputation which tricks people into donating their hair; this is definetely an issue that deserves attention. Making T-shirts adumbrating the facts or plainly stating that the wearer is not interested in donating to LOL is a great idea as well, but lacks the special momentum of group activity.

So what is it about donating hair that has everybody lining up? I personally think it has to do with group activity, self-esteem, and fashion. In instances where a group of people are all doing basically the same thing (ie. singing the National Anthem or dancing), the group will feel more united and feel like they have more efficacy than they would have alone. By donating hair people also feel good--who wouldn't, thinking that their act was helping somebody. Maybe it's got to do with a guilty conscience, either self-inflicted or, most likely, inflicted by the media. Then there's fashion, which is a force of nature all in itself. Remember those outfits or dances that were so popular when you were very young? Everybody was completely into them, but now, most people are hesitant to say that they ever participated. When something is 'in', people want to be part of it because it's the hip thing to do; sheep mentality.
Someone who has donated and is aware of the facts may say that the donation was symbolic, that it made them feel good to give something up to help someone in need. Fine, but unfortunately the gift is pointless, seeing as it only benefits an illegitimate cause that does little to help those in need.

So until an anti-LOL group forms, I'll continue making mini-lectures on the subject if it ever comes up.
