Graduation party...tacky or not?

Hi folks,

so I´ll be totally done with university, exams, orals and stuff next spring and get my degree in july (hopefully!). So today I thought, as I am not a big birthday party person, this would be a nice occasion for a party to see all my friends again. What do you think, nice occasion or a tacky thing to do because it so obviously celebrates me , somehow?

I say go for it! A good party at the end of your exams can't be wrong.

Re: Graduation party...tacky or not?

I think that people love any excuse for a party, so why not throw a big bash for yourself, it'll definitely be a reason for all of you to get together and you can have the party of a lifetime. I know lots of people who give parties for themselves. Have fun and also congratulations on your school accomplishments.

Or am I misreading your reference to birthdays? Oh what the heck, just have a party and have fun.

Re: Graduation party...tacky or not?

I say go for it! Many parents here give parties for their graduates. You could give this party as a way of thanking those who have supported you (morally, emotionally, financially, etc) though your degree . . . and give you a GREAT chance to P-A-R-T-Y!!!

Re: Graduation party...tacky or not?

It's a nice idea, as long as you don't do anything tacky such as asking for gifts or money. Let it be just a get-together with you and your friends. It would be okay to ask one or two local friends to help with the planning, setup and cleanup, if you ask well in advance and don't ask them to spend a lot of money.

People may bring gifts, so be prepared to thank them graciously and set the gifts aside quietly so it doesn't make people who didn't bring gifts uncomfortable.

Have fun!

Re: Graduation party...tacky or not?

HAVE A PARTY!! I am too depressed to throw a party for myself for graduation, and am even considering cancelling my birthday party thatI was planning (which is two weeks before graduation), but I would still like one. You should have a party. Congratulations!

Re: Graduation party...tacky or not?

Well, so then let´s have this party I want a garden party around the pool, I think, but I´ll think about the details when I´m trough most of my exams

@Ursula...well said as always, although I´d like to add that it would´t ever come to my mind to ASK people for gifts Although my parents, grandparents and godmothers are already searching for the most perfect graduation gift, one year in advance

Re: Graduation party...tacky or not?

When I graduated from college I didn't have a traditional 'party', rather my family members and close friends joined me for a lovely dinner at a very nice restaurant. It was not overly festive, then again, I'm not really a 'partying' type of gal. I say, celebrate in whatever way you are most comfortable. If you and your friends are used to going out and partying, then that would probably be the best way to acknowledge the occassion. If you are like me and like things a bit more quiet, a nice dinner may be more suitable. In the end, it's quite okay to celebrate your achievement. You definitely earned it!

Nothing tacky about celebrating a major goal achieved! If you're worried about gifts, have the invites specify no gifts, or donations only to their preferred charity, or to your preferred charity. Another way, is to get a group of your friends with whom are you are graduating (they're graduating too), and have it be an event for all of you.

Nothing wrong with a little chest pounding, back patting and all.
