Question about teeth...

Hello all,
I was wondering if this is normal...I had a cavity (actually 2) filled about a week ago, and the one tooth feels fine, but the other one (a molar on my left upper side) is real sensitive to cold and hot foods/drinks, especially cold, and it gets achy and painful. I was wondering if this is normal for after getting a cavity filled and it will go away, or if I need to be worried and make a dentist appointment?
Thanks.

Re: Question about teeth...

Having had more dental work recently than I'd like I can think of a few possibilities: 1) the new filling changed your bite surface, making the other tooth more sensitive 2) you just need to heal a bit. My teeth always hurt a bit wheenver I get fillings, especially if you get the composite (tooth-colored) ones. According to my dentist they're not as soft as silver fillings, and cause more sensitivity.

Re: Question about teeth...

Hi,
The upper molar on your left side. . .was it sensitive to hot AND cold before you had the filling? It's weird because the upper molar on my left side was sensitive to cold, and then I had the filling and realized it was sensitive to hot and cold. It was uncomfortable, but I waited it out a couple months and finally went back to the dentist. I had to have a root canal (which was actually pretty cool- wasn't painful AT ALL, and was more comfortable then having your teetch cleaned). It's odd because I brush, actually floss once a day, and mouthwash and still had to have a root canal at 18 years old.

I would call the dentist and ask what they think you should do. Just in case.

Re: Question about teeth...

I recently had a cavity filled, my first one in about 35 years! It wasn't even a very bad one, just a little one, but I was not prepared for how long it was sore, I would say it hurt for a good 2 months after getting it filled at least, and it didn't hurt at all before getting the filling. I asked my husband if he thought I should call the dentist (he's an expert, poor guy is always needing dental work), and he said every time he gets a tooth filled it hurts for a long time afterwards too. It's perfectly fine now though, hopefully yours will feel fine soon too.

Re: Question about teeth...

Thank you for the replies!

It was somewhat sensitive before, not so much to hot and cold as it was to direct pressure (biting down on it funny) now its even worse, and it is the filling that blends with the color of the tooth. Maybe I should just wait it out awhile more, I hope I don't need a root canal, yipes. I'm glad yours didn't hurt LadyofShalott, the dentist I know is much nicer to go to these days then it was way back when (not from personal experience, but I've heard stories!) I suppose I'll just have to see how the tooth works out.

Re: Question about teeth...

The last filling I had did this and I was on the verge of going back to the dentist when it finally stopped hurting. Probably nothing to worry about.

Re: Question about teeth...

A tooth can ache for many days from being drilled. Try eating dulse and see if that helps the tooth repair itself. It is a concentrated mineral food.

If the tooth is infected, chew raw garlic and hold it between the gum and the cheek at the root of the tooth. The pain will double and then go away.

Re: Question about teeth...

I had a tooth filled a couple of years ago that took about two months to completely stop hurting. Most of the time I don't have that problem. I think it will just subside. So unless it gets worse, I would just give it time.

Re: Question about teeth...

Almost every filling I have does that for a month or so. I wouldn't worry, I always figure it's just getting used to this new piece of material in your mouth that heats and cools at a different temperature than the rest of your tooth. Not sure why it goes away but it always does!

Re: Question about teeth...

In my experience, that situation has always lead me to having to have a root canal. I've had more root canals than any living person I know. The dentist said that in filling the tooth, the root gets disturbed. Sometimes this goes away, as they said above, but in my case it just kept getting worse. They've drilled directly through new Emperial crowns I've had put on and filled it back with the same color and you can't even tell anything was done.

I wish you luck!

Re: Question about teeth...

Whew, I hope it just goes away! Its not all the time, only when exposed mainly to the cold. I have had fillings before, and this didn't happen like this, its never hurt after, but maybe its just because it was a sensitive tooth to begin with.

Re: Question about teeth...

I have many fillings and most of them have been sensitive to hot/cold at one point. I think I've managed to get over it on one side of my mouth, if I eat cold things and chew them on the other side it still makes my mouth go 'ouch'.

Re: Question about teeth...

It´s probably just a ache caused by your gums withdrawing due to minor infection and some work done. It can be studied by an X-ray (cavities & root-canal jobs- to- do will be seen as dark remercations in the X-ray) .
Take this one from one who´s gone through several root canals and cavities eliminated.

Re: Question about teeth...

Give your dentist a call! I had this happen when I got a crown put on and my tooth was extra sensitive to cold for months. Painful and annoying! The next time I had to put a crown on, I asked the dentist if it was going to be achy for months again afterwards and she said, 'why on earth didn't you call us? We have stuff that can help you with that.'
