My hair has split personalities!

Okay. I'm in a bit of a strange position and I thought I would see if anybody's ever been in it or has any ideas about what to do. My hair has always been 1b. Very occasionally I'll have a 1c day. My dad's hair is a 3a/3b and as little girls both of my younger sisters had curls too, but are now about like me as far as straight hair goes. Anyway, I live in nice, humid, Oregon, and I've been really pampering my hair lately. It seems like since I started using aloe gel (lily of the desert) my hair is trying really hard to get in touch with its inner curl.

When I comb it and let it dry naturally it has its normal wee bit of body wave and then there's like... the very top of the canopy is all curly hairs going wild! It's not enough to make my hair look curly, just like there's this upper layer of frizz but my hair's still totally straight underneath with maybe a few body waves. I'm not quite sure what to do to either encourage the curls or smooth it out.

I've been using kimberlily's defrizz spray lately, and my hair really likes it, but is still definitely not sure what it wants. I'm going to switch to CWC instead of WC, and then hopefully to CO to see if more moisture is what I need, but I was just really curious to know if anybody else has gone through this. Is it just because most of my hair is rather thick and heavy that the curlies sort of... work their way to the top? Or is my hair genuinely changing because of increased moisture? Usually between putting it up, braid/bun waves, and spray/oil/aloe the curls kind of blend in and smooth out, but it's just so... weird!

Re: My hair has split personalities!

Have you tried scrunching in kimberlilly's spray? That's what made me go crazy curly (well crazy curly for my hair). Just for kicks you might wanna just jump in and try CO. I was shocked at how well it worked. It seems like it either works for you or it doesen't (it works very well for me), plus it's a cheap experiment (what, 79 cents for a bottle of vo5 or suave?). Good luck!

Re: My hair has split personalities!

When my hair got in touch with its inner curly, it seriously got in touch! More like a full-on grope than a touch, really. 1b to 2c.

However, I wore updos during the entire transition. I imagine I had a stage like what you're describing, but I never really saw it.

I went through a stage where my hair felt horrible if I dried it loose. I think it might have been my curlies fighting with the ones that hadn't gotten enough moisture to curl yet. I got through it by braiding or loosely bunning my hair to dry. Funky waves didn't matter to me, as I was wearing updos all the time anyway.

Re: My hair has split personalities!

teela: I'll give both a shot. Maybe it'll work to motivate my hair in one direction or the other.

Laoise: Ive always been amazed by your hair's transition. it's gorgeous!

I did a henna gloss on thursday and when I washed last night then did my usual coconut oil and aloe juice my hair started to dry out VERY wavy. I even found a (very loose) ringlet! Sadly, I'm an RA in the dorms at the University of Oregon and we had a fire scare so I had to shove my hair into a bun and run willy-nilly trying to figure everything out. So... we'll never know how far my hair would have gone. I'm going to keep trying to provide my hair with more moisture and maybe try plopping it to dry so it doesn't get pulled straight by its own weight. Yay for impending waves!

Re: My hair has split personalities!

Well, after some serious CO and other sorts of moisturizing, my hair is actually looking more straight. The frizzies are definitely calmed down, and my hair is nice and shiny, but I think the waves were just a fluke. I haven't heard of this happening before, but I guess anything's possible!

My hair seems to go from straight to very wavy, and vice-versa. Sometimes I'll wash/condition etc it, and it will be relatively straight, and the next day it becomes wavy, and the next day it is straight. I notice that it seems to get curlier when it is rainy or humid out. I kind of like the different ways it looks, however, when I want it straight it tends to wave, and when I want it straight it tends to curl.

lol lizlee! Isn't that always the way. My hair always seems to have its own agenda too.

Re: My hair has split personalities!

Mine too, but at the same time! My crown layer is straight-wavy (1b/1c), but the rest of my hair is curly-wavy (2c/3a). The total effect can be anywhere from 2a to 2c depending upon whether or not I have recently CWCed or brushed.

Re: My hair has split personalities!

I kinda feel like the 2's should just be one group as most of us can be any of the 3 "divisions" on a given day
