Healthy eating with an on-the-go lifestyle and allergies...

Spurred by the fact that I've eaten nothing but crap lately, I need some ideas on how Smooch and I can eat healthier in general. We both work 2 jobs and have no time for each other, much less to cook and are often so tired. I do love to cook and am fairly good at it, it's just a matter of making the time.

We have started working out again and are both feeling better, but that cuts in to what little free time we have.

To make matters worse, I have a pretty substantial food allergy list. Some of the more common foods on this list include celery, turkey, mustard, and wheat. Wheat is the hardest because I am not supposed to eat anything made out of flour (cookies, cakes, any bread, powdered donettes, dolly madison fruit pies, nothing tasty!!!) So please, if you do give me any recipes, please please please keep the fact that I can't eat flour in mind. On top of all that, most fruits make my throat itch so I hesitate to eat most fruits. And I hate vegetables.

I am just frustrated with food in general and beginning to think of it as the enemy. Can anyone give me any advice regarding the above? I don't really know where to start. I am looking for tips on how to make healthy meals fast, packing healthy snacks, and most of all resisting the conveinient fast food and junk food.

Karen, do you have a juicer?

We've been using ours again after months of storing it in the cupboard.

You can make juices with mixed fruit and veggies that don't taste like vegetables.

I have some recipes if you'd like to try them.

Just let me know.

alright...lemme (the glutton) jump in...

there are so many many choices available for people wheat allergy.. i think its called gluten allergy or something like that..

lemme think of something without wheat...

omelettes (different different types) hope you are not allergic to eggs.

do oats suit you..? oatbread..rye bread.. so many other types of bread available. check out nearby Traders joes or whole foods...

my simple omelette recipe <ssshhhh....secret>
one egg, one tbsp milk/water/cooking oil (or all three), finely chopped onions, green onions, tomatoes 1 tbsp, little parsley, pepper or green chillies, a little salt. beat egg well and add the remaining stuff. mix well with a fork. make omelettes.

the one tbsp oil/milk/water - is the secret ingredient to softness. a tip from a chef i know. when you add all three, you might have difficulty to flip it over. its that soft

and now another thought.... if not able to spend time with your hubby dear is the main issue, what if you workout on the same gym? or cook bulk on the wknd together, and freeze for later use...

OK, this is not a sexy recipie, but it's what we mostly eat: Boil up some pinto beans (lots and lots) and then freeze a bunch of them. Makes some rice (also lots) and stick it in the fridge. When you're ready to eat dump a bunch of rice and a bunch of beans in a bowl, nuke it and put some salsa on it. It makes a great "bag" lunch too...

Karen - here's a suggestion....I personally haven't had any noticeably food allergies, but my former bf used to be allergic to chocolate and eggs (I think I'd have to shoot myself! *grin*)....he started having accupuncture treatments done, and now he can eat a huge omlette followed by a slice of chocolate cake with no problems *smile*....accupuncture may not have the same effect on everyone, but if you've got 30 minutes-1 hour once a week, you might consider it - who knows, it might clear up some of your food allergies...?

On another note - I've got a book called "Healing With Whole Foods" that I bought at the accupuncture clinic - it's got a section in the back with recipes, and there's some with no wheat (in Eastern philosophy, wheat is considered a common contributor to "damp conditions", i.e. phlegm [runny/stopped up nose, drainage in throat, etc]). I'll post the complete info on this book as soon as I get a chance....
