Tangles at the nape of my neck :( HELP!

Hey guys, My hair is at my tailbone and I always leave it loose. I know if I wear it in braids or a bun daily my hair would be prevented from further breaks from tangles. But I just like it loose. The hairs at the nape tangles almost instantly as it moves.

All of my hair tangles easily but the nape of the neck ESPECIALLY. Is there anything I can do?

Thank you.

Re: Tangles at the nape of my neck :( HELP!

I used to have a terrible problem with this type of tangling. What I do is apply conditioner to my hair the last thing I do in the shower. I run the shower over my hair so that it has lots of extra water in it while I put a good size lump of conditioner in my hand. (I find if I don't do that I get a spot in my hair where the conditioner is real thick and won't spread to other areas. I suppose this is the same effect as diluting the conditioner with water first, but I find if I do that I lose too much conditioner to it just dripping out of my hand.) I apply all of the conditioner to the area of my hair near the nape of my neck, spreading the hairs apart with my fingers, and finger-combing it through, and making sure this whole area is impregnanted with conditioner. Then start moving the extra conditioner downwards to treat the length and ends. When I rinse the conditioner out I am careful to leave a certain thin layer of conditioner, not rinsing it clear out. If I rinse it clear out I get more tangles than ever. I have to be careful not to leave too much conditioner in, though, or I get heavy, sticky hair when it dries. It takes some trial and error to learn how much conditioner to apply to begin with, and how much to allow to stay in while rinsing.

This is just what worked for me when I had this problem. I am pretty new, so I haven't really tried anything different from my old routine, but one thing I have learned in my time on the board here is that everybody's hair is different!

Also think about your jewelry and clothing. Necklaces are notorious for tangling in nape hairs, and fuzzy sweaters, mufflers and coats don't help either.

Re: Tangles at the nape of my neck :( HELP!

Not a whole helluva lot can be done about it if you want to wear it down all the time. These tangles at the neck only get worse the longer it is. Some hair types get it more or less, and some people have a situation where they can detangle many times a day, and some hair types don't suffer from detangling this knot as much as the finer hair.

I'm not even sure that using cones will help prevent tangles at the nape of the neck.

A primary reason I wear my hair up or organized.

I second the necklaces thing. Make sure your hair is not catching on the clasp.

Also, turtleneck collars seem to be a culprit for me.

Switch your wardrobe to all-satin! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Like Heidi W., I always wear my hair up, so I don't have advice on wearing it loose.

Re: Tangles at the nape of my neck :( HELP!

I have this problem a lot, too. The hairs at the back of my neck are in terrible condition. The only method that works for me is using extra conditioner. I've found that if I leave lots of conditioner all throughout my length and let it dry like that, my hair is in much better condition later on. Doesn't work for everyone, though.

Re: Tangles at the nape of my neck :( HELP!

Hi LillyPie!

Hairstorm asked me to check into your thread because I also wear my hair down almost all the time. It looks like we have the same hairtype.

I've noticed that my hair tangles worse when I'm wearing synthetics like polyester. One of my favorite sweaters is woven from black polyester and it tends to create more static which means that my hair ends up sticking to it. Because of this, I end up with more tangles than normal. It's the same when I wear a sweatshirt that is 50/50, cotton and polyester.

I know that some people have been adding a bit of fabric softener to their final rinse and this seems to cut down on static. I've yet to try this myself.

I wish there was more I could offer you. I don't feel like I've helped much here. I hope you're able to find a remedy for this because often more tangles mean more breakage. Not conducive to growing/maintaining long hair.

Keep us posted on your progress!
