How to finish hairsticks?

I don't know if this question belongs here, but I've made several hair sticks and sanded them down very smooth, but I'm wondering how to seal them. The ones I've made in the past have gotten dirty and grungy looking (thus the need for new ones!).

I've rubbed them with wax, but I don't know what this would do to hair (?). They look shiny and feel smooth, they don't seem to be leaving it on my hair. I thought polyurethane, but is that going to do something bad to my hair?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated
Bonnie

Re: How to finish hairsticks?

I rubbed jojoba oil into mine, but I have recently bought some tung oil to try. They are still looking very nice with the jojoba, which is really a liquid wax, not a true oil. I have polyurethane too but I don't really want it near my scalp, so I will stick to the oils.

Re: How to finish hairsticks?

A natural wax should be fine. I think that's what Eve(blondiesturn) uses on her accessories. Jojoba should be good, too. Personally, I wouldn't use polyurethane. It looks shiny, but the polyurethaned things I've felt weren't......silky? I have visions of it dragging on the hair as the stick is inserted.

Re: How to finish hairsticks?

Thanks for your replies

I don't know what happened but all day yesterday I was unable to access the boards, with mozilla it said page could not be found and with IE it just kept loading an old page and asking me over and over to connect to the internet (but I have a continuous connection).

Anyhow, I talked to my dad about poly. and he said it's actually just plastic once it's cure. I also, had visions of half dried poly sticking in my hair and making a mess and possibly 'burning' it chemically. I think(hope!) if I let it dry thoroughly I won't have that happen. I think I'm going to try doing a few with the wax and the poly and have them around for a while, see how they wear, etc.
Thanks again

Bonnie

Re: How to finish hairsticks?

I've always painted my hairsticks with several coats of nail polish. It dries fast, doesn't chip or peel off wood, and makes them super-smooth. Use clear or a fun color!
