Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

My sister, mom and friend asked me to develop a simple list of “promises” to make when taking care of hair. They want something short and sweet. Unlike me, they do not like reading copious amounts of information.

I want to keep it to 10 or less points to make it useful and practical. I think the overall goal is primarily healthy hair (and a healthy self) and secondarily, long hair. I think they need to be something that will apply to anyone, no matter their type of hair.

Here is what I thought of so far:

I promise to:
1. Never, ever, back comb or brush. Ever.
2. Secure my hair in wind, and protect it from the sun, cold, etc…
3. Drink lots of water, eat healthy and take my vitamins.
4. Not pile my hair on top of my head when washing and never brush wet hair.
5. Comb or brush out starting at the bottom and working my way up, slowly without pulling or ripping.
6. and…

So what would you suggest be on the list? Would you remove something? Sleep on satin pillow cases? Deep condition regularly? Use hair friendly accessories?

Thank you for your input.

Those are great!

Hair Awareness! I think noticing your hair's reactions to whatever you do to it can be important.

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

Definitely use hair friendly accessories!

I second the "hair awareness" suggestion.

Good points! I would add: *Do some intensive care moisturising treatments regularly. *Invest in good quality haircare products (including the shampoo/conditioner AND gentle hair toys).

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

My big one is having patience when I'm going through a bad hair week. Seems like every so often I go through this and I think about scissors a bit too much.

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

I like the phrase "treat it like antique lace", it is how I look at my hair now, and keeps my hair awareness very high.

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

Wonderful!!

So we have...

I promise to:
1. Never, ever, back comb or brush. Ever.
2. Secure my hair in wind, and protect it from the sun, cold, etc…
3. Drink lots of water, eat healthy and take my vitamins.
4. Not pile my hair on top of my head when washing.
5. Comb or brush out starting at the bottom and working my way up, slowly without pulling or ripping and never brush wet hair.
6. Be happy in your current length (no hair anorexia!)
7. Be aware of my hair's reactions.
8. Invest in good quality haircare products (including the shampoo/conditioner AND gentle hair toys).
9. Do some intensive care moisturising treatments regularly.
10. Never make a major hair decision (cut, color, etc..) on a bad hair day or out of frustration.
11. Overall, "treat my hair like antique lace".

Does that seem all encompassing? Does it apply to everyone?

You might like to take a gander at 'Catherine's 100 Tips' on TLHS.org (link: http://www.tlhs.org/cartip.html) for further ideas of what to add to your promise list.

I would add: DON'T HEAT STYLE for any reason! That is part of my hair promise and it's been working out so far.

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

Yes, I like the "treat my hair like antique lace" (or silk) very much. It encompasses a lot of the others. But that's a great list, as is Catherine's. I started on that board, and remember reading her list a lot of times to drill certain concepts into my head!

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

Don't shampoo your hair every day.

I've never found someone who needs to shampoo their hair every day. It usually does more harm than good.

Actually, ohjezebel, I DO need to cleanse my hair every day, or I end up being a grease ball. Before LHC, I used shampoo to do this. Now I CO every day and only shampoo about once every ten days to two weeks. My hair is happier, for sure, but I still get 'the greasies' every single day.

BTW, I've had to give up wearing makeup entirely because by about 11 a.m., my face is extremely oily and the makeup has melted off. It's definitely not attractive. I used to think that when I wasn't a teenager any longer, my oil glands would slow down, but that hasn't been the case.

Sorry for hijacking the thread - you can go about your regularly scheduled discussion now.

Peace,
Susan

Re: Need Help Developing a Hair Care Promise

Susan D., when I said "shampoo" I meant "use shampoo" not "cleanse" - I have nothing against CO washes every day. It's the harsher detergents in shampoos (even the organic shampoos) that aren't good for every day use.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum from you. I have horribly dry skin, which is awful in the winter (like right now). This translates to horribly dry hair. I use shampoo about every 5 or 6 days, but I condition every time I shower (every day or every other day).

Back on topic!
