detangling

Does anyone here detangle from the scalp down rather from the ends up? I seem to have better luck that way (and don't rip off my fragile ends.)

Re: detangling

I do both. I usually spend more time on my scalp because I am transitioning from a perm so that part gets tangled more because the textures are mixing. I will run the comb through my ends and then work on the scalp.

Re: detangling

I always detangle from the scalp. I do it in the shower with lots of conditioner. It works best for me this way.

Re: detangling

I detangle when I have conditioner in my hair, from the scalp down. However, if the hair is dry I detangle from the ends up.

Re: detangling

I do either depending on what I use to detangle. I go bottom up if I use a comb but top down when I use my fingers.

Re: detangling

I don't get a lot of tangling when I wash. I sit in the tub and use a hand held shower thingie. It's about the same positioning of the hair during washing and rinising as a real shower. So I have very few tangles. I often start at the scalp with my Mebco detangling comb. The comb just goes right thru my hair. I comb slowly and if I feel the resistance of a tangle I'll stop and work it out from the bottom. Sometimes during the day I'll get tangles down the length and they need to be worked out starting at the bottom.

Re: detangling

I detangle from the ends up, because I find that if I try to detangle from the top down then the tangles ball up into big knots in my hair, which cause breakage and splits.

I also detangle from the top down, unless I know that I have a snarl lower down.

Re: detangling

I start at the top, and sort of work the tangles down closer to the ends, then I go to the bottom and work upward.

Re: detangling

I go from the top to about midway through my hair, and then from the bottoms to midway, my hair tends to get tangled right in the middle, so a combination works best.

Re: detangling

Both..I untangle as much as I can from scalp down. Then untangle the mess at the bottom, from bottom up.

Re: detangling

If my hair is dry, my tangles are usually on my ends, so I start there, working up.

If my hair is wet, I usually start from my scalp going down. I usually have to make sure I leave a little conditioner on the lower half of my hair because my hair is so tangley. Or I use a drop or two of jojoba oil, Evan's Garden hair pomade or Fox's shea leave in on the ends of the hair to help. I just can't shampoo and condition like "normal" people, because my hair is so fine, wavy and prone to tangles.
