However in dealing with the government, that is a different story. There are times that I just want to scream. I am on a provincial disability pension in Ontario Canada here. The government pays for most medical costs. When I got my blood sugar test machine, I had to pay for the machine and they would cover the cost of any needed test strips. This is fair enough or so I though, tell I got a phone call yesterday saying the type of test strips I had to use with my machine would not be funded by the government. I than had to return the machine and test strip to the drug store and exchange them for a machine that uses test strips that the government would cover. No problem except the test strips of 100 actually cost the government $1.00 more than what the ones I would have used cost. each purchase of strips would have saved them money. Go figure. And the new machine was of lesser quality that only lets me take blood samples from my finger, than than arms or legs as the other machine did. I also had about 6 days pof blood sugar test result stored on the other machine that I had to return. This makes me angry. But there is also some good news. Next week on Thursday May 15, I see the dietition at the diabetic clinic in the same building as my doctor. I will than begin to learn more about how to better control my diet. So many challenges to deal with here. It becomes ever more difficult to continue to keep a postive outlook on everything. But of course, I must. I must continue to be strong as my wife Linda depends on me to do so. She is not such a strong person and gains her strength from me. But all will work out over time. I see your healthcare system in Canada is as organized as our HMO's in the US. Keep your chin up Peter, it sounds like the worst is over as far as getting your equipment is concerned and next week, you'll be getting the info you need to control this thing. __________________ Deb | | | May 7th, 2003, 05:29 PM | #3 | | Moderator Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Central Tejas Age: 49 Posts: 12,727 Type: 2b/2c/F/i | (((((((((((((((((((((((((((Peter)))))))))))))))))) )))))))))))))))) dealing with the government, when you depend on them for so much, can truely be frustrating! I am sad for you! I was wondering if there is anything you can do to give yourself a "treat" for all of your diligence and hard work. Maybe treat yourself to a day at a park you don't normally go to (and now that SPring is here, it should be really pretty) . . . maybe feed the ducks . . . If budget allows, maybe treating yourself (and wife, maybe) to the dollar movie (if you have that) . . . get out of the house, do something fun and frivilous! You are a very kind man! You need to take care of yourself! I know your wife depends on you, but you need to pamper yourself a little, too! ((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))) | | | May 7th, 2003, 05:42 PM | #4 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 78 | I understand what you are dealing with. It has been the same here with me trying to get help for my Dad over the years and dealing with all the medications and red tape he has to go through. It is a big headache, but try to stay as positive as you can. As long as you do have something to check your blood sugar levels that is what is important. Try your very best to become committed to good health and eating habits. I have been taking care of my Dad for almost 5 years now and he is dealing with a lot of complications from diabetes. He never would watch his diet. There are good diets out there. Learn all you can. Keeping your sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure under control is very important. Learn alternative things too you can do to help balance sugar levels. I don't mean to sound like I am preaching a sermon, but I have watched my Dad suffer and go through such a hard time the past few years. Because he felt good at the time I guess he thought it wouldn't be a problem, but once you start showing outward symptoms the damage has already been done. You can control it.. go to your dietitian and learn all you can about eating healthy and exercise, like walking. I pray they will one day be a cure.. they are coming out with better treatments all the time. Many blessing to you. {{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}}} __________________ ~*~ Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. I'm sorry about the hassles you've been having to deal with concerning the government. That is really awful! I admire your strength, and I know it must be hard to be strong not only for yourself, but for your wife as well. Good luck to you! Sheba | You are so right about the pending election. I am a social activist involved in fighting for the rights of disabled people and others less able to fight the system than I am. I look forward to working in the elections in my own riding of Hamilton West towards electing a more compasionate group in power that might better care about the needs of the low income and working poor. It will be an uphill battle. but one worth fighting. I have learned to fight from within the system with a great deal of success. It is through my many political contacts that Linda and I have done so well over time. Things will get better but it does take time. I hope that it improves before my challenges cause me to be much too tired to continue the strong fight for a better system and better health care.
