Question Never Heard Of This Before!

Ok, i finally made the diceision to give up the bleach, and go back to my natural dark blonde/brown hair. i went for a consultation with a colorist today before making my appointment so they know what they are dealing with here lol. Im so sick of the damage!! ive realized that as a kid ive never had problems with curly hair. it seems the more chemicals (bleach/ color) i used on my hair, the more it curled and the more out of control it got. so my first questoin is can damage cause curl?, im guessing maybe because it destroys the structure of the hair... and second, i told this to the colorist and he wasnt too sure of that, and he asked me if im on any medications and i asked him why, and he told me that some medications may couse the hair to change in structure. i was fascinated with this! i reall ywant to know if anyone else has experianced structural hair change from meds???

Answer to your 1st question is probably not. When I used to use semi-permanent color on my hair it pulled out much of the curl and got straighter.
The only medications that I know that can change the structure of hair is chemotheraputic agents used to treat cancers. Thats because they can actually change the RNA strands that are code the texture, color or structure of the hair itself. My DH is an Oncology nurse and there have been many instances when people undergoing chemo have lost all their hair and it grows back a totally different color, texture and curly/straight/wavy, when it never was that way before.

Believe me, if there was a medication that could make curlies straight and vice-versa then MANY women who want what they dont have would be taking it!!! Certainly not me because I LOVE my curls!!

Re: Never Heard Of This Before!

Curly hair naturally has its cuticle lifted, so hair with a lifted cuticle from chemical processes could be curlier, although it's usually frizz rather than nicely formed curls(it was for me).

Re: Never Heard Of This Before!

If anything, bleaching would make your hair less curly.

A lot of people don't have curly hair as kids and then get it as teens. That's probably what happened to you.

I was just going to mention the Puberty Perm. Some women also go straighter or curlier during pregnancy and menopause. It's because of the hormones.
