Tonight I went to my belly dance class, and a put my hair in a high braid to keep it out of the way. I fastened it with some pretty cloisonne ponytail holders, not thinking about how much my hair would swing around while I danced. Honestly, it wouldn't have been a problem, except we are learning a routine that a. involves spinning and b.is very fast. Wouldn't you know it, the very last time we practiced it I spun around so fast the cloisonne balls hit me right in the chin! It still kinda hurts a little, though I don't think I'll have a bruise. Almost makes me glad my hair isn't hip length yet---wouldn't want innocent people getting hurt! And yes, I'll stick with scrunchies and elastic bands from now on! Very long, very VERY thick, very shiney, very healthy - everything we all ooh and ahh over. LOL Well, everyday she would wear it in one long braid down her back - reaching all the way to her tailbone and I remember not being able to wrap my fist around the middle of her braid. We're talking THICK hair. Let me tell you...this girl was obnoxious! Obnoxious, bouncy, and all over the place! I don't think she was aware of the power her braid had, but MAN that thing hurt! She would whip around and nail you without even realizing it, then ask you what was wrong when she came back five minutes later to see you sprawled out on the floor! LOL Anyway, no point to this - just sharing a memory. Be careful with that hair of yours!!! LOL!!! | | | February 20th, 2003, 09:39 PM | #4 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Alaska USA Posts: 517 Length: 4/30/?? Type: 2b/2c/C/iii | So would that be a new hair hazard? Hope that doesn't leave a mark! It does take some momentum, though, since it's too heavy to fly around with some good "umpf" first. Hope your bruising goes away pronto! __________________ | | | February 20th, 2003, 11:57 PM | #6 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 413 | I used to be a dancer, and at dance school plaits and pony tails were banned because of too many people smacking themselves in the face when they did a pirouette! Buns were the only permitted hair-do for anyone with long hair. My braid is becoming a hazard to others in aerobics when I jump around now, but I can't think of any other style that will stay in through all that bouncing LOL! __________________ chin length / 43 7/8" / 45" 1AiiF Oily roots, fine, fragile, flyaway length Golden brown | | | February 21st, 2003, 04:07 AM | #7 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Iowa Age: 51 Posts: 1,416 Length: 20?/35/48? Glad to hear there is another belly dancer around! | | Hope you don't end up with a "battle scar"! So, how long have you been studying? Do you study a particular style? __________________ 2c/3a / FM / ii 18" / 30" / ~30" | | | February 21st, 2003, 06:44 PM | #9 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Tennessee Posts: 322 | | Before I started reading these boards, I had no idea how | | many ways long hair is useful. Now, we have the idea of using a swinging braid as a method of self-defense, if only we can learn to keep from hitting our own chins in the process. | | | February 21st, 2003, 08:40 PM | #10 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 202 | | Well, it didn't bruise, thank goodness! | | And I have another dance class tomorrow morning. Let's see if I can avoid braining myself with my own hair! I've been taking belly dance on and off for years; seriously for the past three years or so. In the past six months I've made it my goal to practice four times a week and I actually lost 10 pounds I'd put on since starting grad school. I'm not that great a dancer, but it is a great stress reliever for me. Oh and I guess I study cabaret style dance. Happy growing (and dancing)! Years ago when I was at school (and my hair would have been waist length or thereabouts) my fave band released a single called "Hang Your Head". My friend looked at me and said "Please don't, you'll damage someone". I didn't. But I will remember this - particularly as belly dancing interests me...but doesn't seem so widely available/advertised over here. I agree...it is great exercise (you'll find muscles you didn't know that you had!) and above all, a great stress reducer. I've been studying about the same length of time that you have, about 4 years. I do tribal, though, just started dancing with a troupe about a year ago. Belly dance is so addictive! Keep shimmying! (And beware of flying braids! - hey, that could be a cool name for a troupe! ) __________________ 2c/3a / FM / ii 18" / 30" / ~30" | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
