Judging Amy....Tyne Daly cut her hair off....

.
I was so sad over tonight's episode of Judging Amy.
Tyne Daly plays Maxine Gray, Amy's mother.

Maxine's fiance mentioned she might cut her hair.
In the same episode, he died of a heart attack, and at the end of the
show, she cut her hair off.

It is so sad that the actor did indeed die in real life.
How very sad.

The Grief Cut is a heartbreaking reaction to pain, and yet, somehow, I understand it perfectly.

I saw that episode tonight, too. It was very sad (and very well done, I thought) and the haircutting made it sadder. It did make sense for the character, though. Didn't Yoko Ono famously cut her hair when John Lennon died?

Cutting your hair when someone dies is a very old tradition. Isn't it mentioned in the Bible as an act of mourning? I'd look it up, but I'm too tired from doing taxes. My guess is that it is in Leviticus somewhere amongst all the laws.

Yes, I saw the show lastnight. I couldn't believe she really was doing that.
Sometimes I think when I admire someone for keeping their hair long, in her case because of her age. I should drop them a line of encouragement and let them know.

Oh, I miss watching that show. I had read when the show started that she only grew her hair out and allowed herself to grow out the grey for that role. I believe she felt Maxine would have her hair like that so she grew it out.

Sorry to hear the actor died, he was such a warm personality.

Cutting your hair after a death is a very old tradition. It is usually associated with cultures who consider long hair as a symbol of strength, and the death "weakens" those close to the deceased, so they cut their hair.

BTW--In several Native American cultures, women who wish to "divorce" thier spouces cut their hair to show that he is "dead" to them.

I'm hit and miss with that show, so I didn't know that!

That's sad! I always loved her hair long... loved her bun styles too!
