Might be wishful thinking that it can work, but I think I'll try it anyhow. I've never tried to cover up/get rid of mine, so I don't know a thing about products that are supposed to "fix" it. I think that you'll find most of the folks on the board either just color their gray or leave it alone. And I know that a few of us have thinning issues, but not many, apparently. Or they aren't 'fessing. Speedy | | | January 6th, 2005, 06:11 AM | #4 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Mar 2003 Location: at the Oh! Hair isn't thinning though (thank goodness!). I've never heard of Melancor before. If you decide to "buy & try" please post a review for us! | | | January 6th, 2005, 06:30 AM | #5 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: May 2004 Posts: 1,208 | | Re: Melancor for Graying/Thinning Hair | | I only have a couple grays here & there that I cut out. But I've never colored my hair before & don't want to start. Especially since I'd have to use henna since I only use natural products. If this product can assist me with that, I will be very happy. I'm sure I'll give a report either way as I feel it's my job to give back to LHC since I get so much great info from here. | | | January 6th, 2005, 07:16 AM | #6 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Atlanta Age: 42 Posts: 289 Length: ??/??/40 Type: 1b/F/M/i/ii | | Re: Melancor for Graying/Thinning Hair | | My hair is thinning a bit on top; although, since I quit smoking and started taking vitamins, I have seen a little new growth. I have been looking for something to try for this. I'll check into it. I would like to hear from anyone else that might have tried it first | | | January 6th, 2005, 10:05 AM | #7 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: May 2004 Location: northwestern usa Age: 57 Posts: 826 Length: 19/20/~~ Type: 1b/F/i/ii | | Re: Melancor for Graying/Thinning Hair | | Okay, okay I fess up! I don't mind the graying one bit, but I was frightened out of my wits to have lost so much hair!!! I am talking about years and years adding up to about 15 years of handfuls upon handfuls of lost hair! Since I feel I have found the culprit and things are better for me I am not going to rock the boat and venture off on any other... I want to say gimmick, but I don't want to step on toes. I am grateful to have learned so much here from everyone! What I have learned has helped me. My hair is recovering and just a tad thicker! Not much, but a tad thicker is better than a tad thinner. Graying doen't bother me, it is natural, and beautiful. Yes, stress and life circumstances or an illness can cause a person to gray before their time, as with me, but it is not a bad thing. I started getting silver many years ago, when everyone else before me in my family didn't gray until in their late 60's... now is that fair?! We only grow old once in our life, I say let's do it with style... got me a new red hat and a purple dress. As WholeheartMom said... well something like this... highlighted by the Master Designer Himself. Now, if I had left it in His hands and not the "professional's" hands, I would never have gotten into this mess to begin with! All I wanted was a simple color-weave, and yes they usually turn out beautiful... but I just had to end up with a disaster! Just my luck! Or lesson... It took me 9 years or so to stop chemically damaging my hair, I love henna! Someday that will stop too. But good luck, I would definitely be interested in seeing if this is a helpful product. I just have too many questions about it and would feel like a guinea pig trying it out. | | | January 6th, 2005, 11:51 AM | #8 | | Banned Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: ooommmm Posts: 52 Length: 6"/36"/?? Mostly what I found is that nutrition and a good supplement routine is very important. I have added a lot of protein to my diet (mostly from eggs and meat, and some protein powders). I am taking a multivitamin and also slowly adding more supplements. The ingredients listed here make sense, most of them support healthy circulation. I could not find much information on Thailam, but the others can be found as part of multivitamins or separate supplements. The question is whether you can get these supplements from other sources and cheaper, or whether it's worth paying the $50.00 to get them all in one tablet (and whatever the proprietary blend means). They do not list the amounts of these ingredients. Isn't that required by law? My guess is that the product probably works but no better than other vitamins taken for your own individual needs. And no product will work immediately. Read the information below and make your own conclusions. So, some info on the ingredients: Bromelain Bromelain is the name of a group of powerful protein-digesting, or proteolytic, enzymes that are found in the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). Discovered in 1957, and widely studied since then, bromelain is particularly useful for reducing muscle and tissue inflammation and as a digestive aid. Supplements are made from enzymes found in the pineapple stem. Bromelain is a natural blood thinner and anti-inflammatory. It works by breaking down fibrin, a blood-clotting protein that can impede good circulation and prevent tissues from draining properly. Bromelain also blocks the production of compounds that can cause swelling and pain. When inflammation is reduced, blood can move more easily to a traumatized area, easing pain and speeding healing. Thailam Thailam provides relief from all kinds of pains including Back Pain, Stiff Neck, Muscle Stiffness and Arthritis. Collagen II Collagen type II is the major structural component of hyaline and elastic cartilage, intervertebral discs, and vitreous humour. Collagen type II, is also a fibril forming collagen; it complexes with important carbohydrates in these areas where resistance to tension is needed. It is also used as a building block for hair, skin and nails. Biotin We all know... but... this nutrient assists the body in metabolizing protein, fats, and carbohydrates from food. It plays a special role in enabling the body to use blood sugar (glucose), a major source of energy for body fluids. Biotin also helps produce certain enzymes. PABA An abbreviation for para-aminobenzoic acid, PABA appears to be a component of folic acid, a member of the B family of vitamins. It plays a role in breaking down and using proteins, and in forming red blood cells. PABA is synthesized naturally in the intestines from friendly bacteria, and can also be obtained through grains and animal products. Supplements are available as well. While PABA is not considered an essential nutrient--no RDA has been established and deficiencies in humans have not been reported--these supplements may have certain therapeutic effects in the body. PABA is important for healthy hair and skin, and taking it in supplement form may prevent hair loss by protecting hair follicles. Interestingly, people who have gone gray may experience a return of their natural hair color by taking PABA, but only if they are deficient in B vitamins. Not all studies have shown that this is effective, however. Pantothenic Acid Also known as vitamin B5, pantothenic acid is essential for a number of basic bodily functions--from growth to reproduction. It participates in the continual breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins from food, converting them into compounds the body can use. This vitamin also produces numerous enzymes and helps maintain precise communication between the central nervous system and the brain. Choline Lecithin is considered an excellent source of choline, one of the B vitamins. Once in the body, a key component of lecithin--phosphatidylcholine--breaks down into choline. Now available in dietary supplement form, phosphatidylcholine (PC) might be thought of as a purified extract of lecithin. It is commonly recommended for treating liver, nerve, and a variety of other conditions, including multiple sclerosis and memory loss. Methionine The importance of adequate stores of the amino acid methionine cannot be underestimated. Methionine is particularly important because it supplies sulfur--a mineral--that helps to maintain healthy skin tone, well-conditioned hair, and strong nails. Because your body can't produce this essential amino acid on its own, you must get it from methionine-rich foods, such as cheddar cheese, eggs, chicken, and beef. Supplements are also a source. Methionine is thought to keep fat from building up in the liver, and it's often included in liver-detoxifying products called lipotropic combinations. These formulations are believed to accelerate the flow of bile and cell-damaging toxins away from the liver. They commonly contain the B vitamins choline and inositol in addition to methionine. Methionine in lipotropic combinations has been proposed for treating endometriosis, a condition in which patches of endometrial tissue from the uterine lining grow outside the uterus. The nutrient is believed to help by expediting the removal of excess estrogen from the liver. The bleeding, cramps, pain, and other complications of this common ailment may subside as a result. More research is needed, however. Inositol Inositol plays an important part in the health of cell membranes especially the specialized cells in the brain, bone marrow, eyes and intestines. The function of the cell membranes is to regulate the contents of the cells, which makes effective functioning possible. Inositol is said to promote healthy hair, hair growth, and helps in controlling estrogen levels and may assist in preventing breast lumps. It may also be of benefit in reducing blood cholesterol levels. Additional info on collagen protein: A deficiency of protein in the hair can result in a temporary change of hair color and texture, resulting in brittle, thin, lusterless, kinky, easily tangled, weak and hair breakage below the surface of the skin. Hair is made of protein and proteins are used as the building blocks of strong hair. Protein deficiency can result from poor diet, aging, illness, drugs, hair coloring, bleaching, and hair perms. When the collagen protein deficiency is corrected, the hair will return to its normal strong, shiny, full-of-body and bouncy condition. __________________ 26-1c F/M ii / goal: 32-1c F/M iii I don't want people who want to dance, I want people who have to dance. /George Balanchine/ | | | January 7th, 2005, 01:10 PM | #10 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,560 Length: 32/37/65 | | Re: Melancor for Graying/Thinning Hair | | My aunt was treated for cancer in the late 80s at Vanderbilt University with a new, at that time, vitamin routine. She took large doses of B vitamins, and probably others too, in an IV once a month. She was 60 years old and gray. The treatment returned her hair to the original black and it was healthy and beautiful. She was in stage four cancer when the treatment began and it keep her alive for three years. She almost beat it, but in the end she did lose the fight. I don't know where the experiment is now in treating cancer patients, but I did think it was interesting to see how it effected her hair. They said they would match any price minus another 5% & they did. I paid $25.17 per bottle + free shipping. Stay away from Quick2You.com who claims they will match any price yet refused to when I e-mailed them. Didn't even give an explanation. Bad customer service. I'll let everyone know how it works. | | | January 25th, 2005, 03:46 AM | #15 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: May 2004 Location: Toronto Age: 58 Posts: 3,648 Length: 23.5/32/35 Type: 2c/M/i/ii | | Re: Melancor for Graying/Thinning Hair | | Don't know why I didn't chime in earlier. Just didn't read the thread, even though my hair is both graying and thinning (though I'm sure hte latter has stabilized nad maybe even reversed a bit in the last few years). Will be watching your experiment with great interest.... Meg -- that's an interesting story about your aunt. I wonder, too, whatever became of the treatment. __________________ Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
