As roller setting is a lot of work do you find the results worth the effort? Do you set for body, curl or for straightening? Thought the responses would be interesting as most who are fans of the GM process love their hair after it is roller set. | | | January 1st, 2005, 03:03 PM | #2 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: NYC Age: 34 Posts: 979 Length: 27/32/44 Type: 1b/F/M/ii/iii | | Re: Roller Setting Long Hair | | Hi maneguy I've never actually roller-set my hair and let it dry. I guess I'm lazy. I used to use curling irons and then chop off the damaged ends every couple of months, but since I'm growing can't do that anymore. I use steam curlers-- the little steamer that you set sponge curlers on and then roll in your hair. They take a lot less time than anything else, and from what I know are not supposed to damage your hair. I don't know about the other claim that steam conditions hair (hmmm...) but I do like to curl my hair so for now I'm continuing to use them. | | | January 1st, 2005, 03:03 PM | #3 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,560 Length: 32/37/65 | | Re: Roller Setting Long Hair | | I haven't roller set in a while, but I have done it. I do it to give my hair body or swing and it also straightens it. I have a hard plastic set I bought at Sally's. I also bought the two next large size rollers to go with the set. I really like it and view it as a valuable addition to my haircare regiment. It looks like a lot of time and effort just to make your hair not look like it's natural self. And I'm curious why you're asking us about roller setting, since your post history indicates that you have quite a bit of experience roller setting hair. | | | January 1st, 2005, 05:15 PM | #5 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 31 | | Re: Roller Setting Long Hair | | Dianyla: The reason I posed was just out of interest as it seems to come up a lot and I was wondering just how popular roller setting on long hair was amongst the general group. In addition I thought it would be a good topic to diversify some discussion around if the interest was there. Hope this answers your question. Take care. maneguy. | | | January 1st, 2005, 05:44 PM | #6 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Reno, NV Age: 54 Posts: 1,226 Type: 1c/M/ii | | Re: Roller Setting Long Hair | | I have not had a roller set since I was about seven. It just doesn't appeal to me, for myself. It would make me feel to "done" looking. The stylist put it up too tight, and then she took it down before it was dry, even though I told her it was going to take three hours to dry. So I had no wave. Not happy memories. | | | January 10th, 2005, 06:37 PM | #8 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: BFE Posts: 7,970 Length: 18"?/36"/40" Type: 1c/2a/M/ii | | Re: Roller Setting Long Hair | | I set my hair once in a while. I have Carusos, magnetics, Wrap Snap and Go, and hot rollers. I do it for fun or for a special occasion. I get different looks with different types of rollers. I had a salon set once and it took the girl over and hour to set it and it was a lot shorter than it is now. I hate salon dryers and refuse to put myself to that torture. The only exceotion would be a GM full treatment. I can set my own hair in about 20 minutes so why would I go to a salon? I like the different texture and curl pattern I get with a set. Setting is no big deal to me since I was a teen in the 60s and set my hair every single night in high school. Its like riding a bike you never forget how. | | | January 10th, 2005, 11:25 PM | #9 | | Long Hair Devotee Join Date: Jan 2005 Posts: 360 Length: SHDL/MBL+/?? This is a great technique for those with natually curly hair who want a straighter look without heat. I love Caruso steam rollers also for various looks, like spiral curls. And it puts moisture into the hair. | | | January 11th, 2005, 03:45 AM | #10 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Sep 2003 Location: In the castles of my mind Posts: 2,630 Length: ??/21+/?? Too much trouble for everyday, and the heat would probably be damaging. I don't have the time or inclination to try using cold rollers, takes so long to dry and I hate going to bed with curlers in my hair, soft or no. When I was a teenager, back in the Dark Ages (wink), and the straight, smooth, "hippy hair" look was in, I used to set on OJ cans regularly - and sleep with them in! Oy. | He he Ah the good old days! I still have tomato paste cans in with my magnetic rollers as they don't make a roller in the size I need and the tomato paste cans are the perfect size. | | | January 11th, 2005, 05:07 AM | #12 | | Long Hair Guru Join Date: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,560 Length: 32/37/65 | | Re: Roller Setting Long Hair | | Quote: | Originally Posted by Carolyn He he Ah the good old days!
