I'm thinking about ordering some shea butter for my hair, but it is so expensive! Before I take the plunge, what do y'all think of it? Thumbs up or thumbs down? How do you use it?

TIA,
RBR

First of all, I LOVE your hair color!

I use straight shea butter on every part of my body except for my hair, but I've used it melted with olive oil for a hot oil treatment and it was fabulous. It's too solid, especially now in the winter, so it doesn't really do much for my hair but make it funky. On the other hand, my roommate has used it in his hair to floof it on top when he was out of his Crew pomade gunk, so funky is good for some! :D

It's very thick and can be a little tough to get out if you put too much in (make sure to wash and rinse in WARM water...not cool), but it's SO worth it. It's my favorite new "product." :)

I say go for it. If you can't use it on your hair, use it on your bod (or face!).

I've always been hesitant to put it on my hair because several people on naturallycurly claim they've had real build-up problems with it, and because I'm generally wary of putting solid butters on my hair. (Cocoa butter went in exactly once and was a pain to remove afterwards.)

I use it a lot for my skin, though.

Cheers,
Jonobie

Cocoa butter is MUCH harder than shea. I'd imagine it would be like putting wax in your hair. EEK!

I melt it and mix it with EVOO to use as a pre-shampoo treatment. I also have a pomade made from CB and SAO... works great for me (thick hair) but I imagine it wouldn't be so good for finer hair.

Yeah, it was icky. I mean, I cut it about half & half with EVOO, but it still was difficult to remove. Yik.

Smelled nice, though. :)

Hey, there RBR! :)

I'm joining the ranks of "for my body, but haven't used it in my hair" ! :)

It feels soooooooooooo good on the skin, but I'm afraid to put it in my hair, since most oils tend to make my hair crunchy :( I *might* give it a try this summer, when it won't harden back up! ;)

BTW, I got mine from LisaJaney. She bought it from a guy on Ebay, and it is goooooooood stuff! ;)

I love shea butter, and while I do sometimes use it on my hair, it is the most amazing in skin care. It shouldn't be expensive, I'm not sure where you have seen it. You can get unrefined versions very affordably at: http://www.natureswildchild.com/

Well I love Shea Butter. I have a Sarah Michaels body cream that is loaded with it and it makes my skin soooo smooth. I've even taken my still shea slimy hands and ran them over my hair to get rid of those -30 frizzys and it worked a trick. I haven't experimented with normal Shea/hair witchery... But maybe someday.

I say it's worth the $$. Believe it or not a pound is a lot of shea, and a little bit melted between your hands (melts at body temp) goes a long way.

I use it on my body not my hair. I melt if down and then add a little vit.
E oil and EO's of my choice. I then pour it into small (1/2c size) pyrex bowls and put it in the fridge to harden back up. I then pop them out of the molds and use them as body bars.
I also keep the extras in the fridge in a gal zip lock bag. It works very well.

Thank you Palonia. Yes I henaed... the post is on the boards somewhere... around... here... Drat. I can't get another explorer window to open so I can link to it... The title is "My new color pics" or something to that effect.

Anyway Thank you! I agree the henna really shows the health. And thank you for noticing my braids :D I love braids! (Can you tell?)

This sounds great. I think I'll give this a try. Thanks Nitsa!

  I love it.  I haven't tried it on my hair yet. If I could --- I'd melt a vat of the shea butter and lounge in it for a few hours! mmmmmmm

I bought a little bit of it because someone mentioned back in January that it was a miracle worker on dry chapped lips. They were sooo right!

I bought a pound of it now! I melted a bit, added lavender EO and I'm in heaven! It's wonderful on freshly shaven legs and rough elbows. Even my soft spots (I've got lots of them!) love it. I mixed up a batch with ylang ylang and can't wait to slather that on.

Y'all convinced me! I just ordered a pound of African Natural shea butter, 8 ounces of jojoba oil, and 8 ounces of virgin oil de coco-creme from Nature's Wild Child. Can't wait!!

Thanks!
