So many of us have layers that we don't want. What is your opinion of the best way to grow them out for you?

I'm not going to worry about layers until the longest part of my hair is at least waist length. Then I'll probably do tiny trims periodically until the rest of my hair catches up. I don't have my heart set on having hair all one length, but it might make updos easier. ;)

Right now, I'm trying to hold out til BS length, then I'll see about some cutting to even it up a little. Of course, once I actually get some length to it, I may not want to part with any of it. ;)

The best thing is probably to cut 'em off before the growing process even begins, but I can't bring myself to do that. I'm trimming a little every other month, but without losing length and still moving forward. Can we say patience?? ;)

I remember when I had those dreaded layers
in my hair; it truly seemed like eternity until
they were all out of my hair (and it seemed
like even longer  for my bangs to
even out!!!!

To get through that stage, I usually put my
hair back in a low pony tail and forgot
(the best that I could) about those layers
I had going on. (and bangs)

I would occasionally go to my favorite
stylist and have her even the ends up
(but we've already discussed that; and
we're on a break from that too!)

I guess the best advice would be to just
keep coming here and chatting/venting about
all these hair woes! Hahahhaaha

Chat soon! 8)

BINGO!!!!!!!!! That's kinda where I'm at right now. My hair is just touching BS, and I haven't had a trim in nearly a year! So, I know I need a trim to get my longest layer closer yet to the next layer, BUT I'm chicken!!!! :( Quite frankly, I need the layers dusted, too. They're starting to look a bit icky. It is excruciatingly difficult to part with any length, especially when I don't really NEED to - I mean, it's been a long time since my last trim, but my ends are still even. :? I admire Fia's ability to keep trimming her hair from a pixie and getting it all even.

My hair is mostly one length, but I am growing out bands. I trim my bangs slightly less than my growth rate so I am catching up. My bangs are only 5 inches shorter than the rest of my hair right now, and my hair is so curly that you cannot see them unless I seperate them from the rest of my hair and point them out.

Jeez, if only I knew. My bottom layer is a full 3" below my next higher layer. Talk about not blending and looking thin.

Hubby suggests cutting to all one length now, so that I can have hair I'm happy with for the whole trip down to my tailbone. I don't want to lose three freakin' inches, though, because I'm happy to have the length that I've got. But I don't like the look of them.

I'm currently thinking about going to the GM salon in Columbus when I'm there from April 11-20 and getting the treatment and a chop to one length. I figure I ought to be able to trust a GM salon not to cut *above* the bottom layer. Of course, they'll know I'm a one-timer and from out of town, so it seems like they might be less careful.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I'm probably an individual case here, but I kept mine fairly short until my layers all caught up. It started with me having to cut off bs length hair to rid myself of severe damage from a perming disaster which I had to re-perm straight to fix. It ended up about lip-length with layers (as the top section was the most damaged). I really dislike hair that is shorter than chinlength on myself, so I let it grow an inch or two, and then I kept it there for a good year, after which I let it grow to just about my shoulders. I then had a few more layers put in to get rid of the rest of the damage. I kept it trimmed at this length until I had completely virgin hair that was almost all one length (about 1/2 inch diff, from top layers to bottom). Then I started growing, and trimming a little more off the bottom than the top, and within a few months they were even. :) I had wanted waistlength hair prior to cutting it off from bs, so I had the full intention of growing it out once everything was virgin and even, right from the beginning. Of course once everything had evened up, and I decided I needed to research hair care on the internet, I was seduced by the boards to go much longer. ;) For me personally, since I knew I wanted it one length once it had grown out, it was easier to get rid of the layers as soon as I could, rather then waiting 5 times as long, so that I could save the length, or keep growing in the process. This was even more pronounced with my desire to get rid of the damage. Part of the reason for this, could be that at the time I was very uncomfortable with how I looked in updos (now I wear them 95% of the time, and finally have begun to appreciate my appearance with them), so it was very important that I felt good about how it looked down. For someone that likes updos, or isn't bothered by them, I think it would be much easier to live with layers they didn't like, because they could get it out of the way and out of sight.

Oh yikes, been there done that! Never never layers again. Layers might be great in curly or nice wavy hair but not in my 1C hair. Less hair is better??? not for me. I cut them off about 1" at a time. Every 3 to 4 months. It was hell, pure hell. I didn't have the courage to lop it all off to chin length which as that it would have needed. I considered it but I just couldn't do it. I've cut it a smidge at a time. I still have side pieces from the bangs to grow out but thank god the layers are gone. I never want layers again. They didn't work in my hair at all.

Trim regularly is the closest to my thoughts!

I say:

trim length, trim length and layer (less for layer), trim length, etc. alternating back and forth.

Of course, when *I* was growing out my layers I waited 3-4 months between trims and only had 1/4 inch trimmed. This was a SLOW evening up process, but it kept the layers more split-free AND the length!

Now I love layers and love to see them.
But I have decided if I want long hair hair it's going to have to me one length.
I suggest start trimming at a length you like now. I like being a BS and my hair still feels long so this is a good place to start taking off my new growth without feeling like I have shorter hair.

I am trimming regular now. I am at BS and trimming off all my new growth. My barber took off 2 inches ( I was just past BS at the time) and I just had a trim Friday. Happy to say I am still at BS :)

Once I am all one length at BS I will then stop my reg trimmings and concentrate on gaining length.

Great Poll

My barber suggestes doing what I am doing now. Just trimming off new growth and a little at a time.

She said taking off all the bottom layers would take me way to short and she didn't want to do that. Shoot, she didn't even want to cut my 2 inches off in the first place. Nice to have a barber that doesnt want to cut off all your hair :D

She suggests being patient and not cutting all at once.

I have very occasionally been trimming my bottom layer, but have not touched any of the other layers except for major S&D! I would probably have some layers but they are too expensive for me to maintain. My hair has just enough wave that they have to be cut *just right* or the ends of my curls flip the layers out so I have frizz-head. Yeah. Nice. :no
As my current grow out they are sort of incorporating into my desired overall U-shape. But they need to get a bit longer so I can braid my hair without whipsies coming out near the tassle.

I'm anxious to get some length, but I can tell that I have hairs that are all different lengths mixed in from the old layers. I haven't trimmed since November, I don't know if they will want to trim when I get it done for prom, the lady who's doing it is a very light trimmer (yay!!!) but she's also very heavy-handed with the "glue" products (can't win em all) but I'm not planning to cut again till at least next fall. I want some length before I start chopping!! My bangs are growing nicely as they are past chin-length and the rest is just shoulder-length. I'm very "forget cutting!!" right now

I didn't vote on the poll but

My 3" long hair in 1994 was feathered and it grew out until it was behind my back / below shoulders. I then got it trimmed again in 96 and lost the 3 or more inches to "even it up"

I don't know if that counts as growing layers or not but it was uneven lengths.

Anyway, my routine back then was to wear a baseball cap when my hair would get blown in my face. That's pretty much how I dealt with it until it got past my shoulders.

I think my advice would be to grow it till it gets past your shoulders if You can stand it. In the meantime if you can do S&D on them that might help.

Maybe it would be good to get at least one trim to kinda even them up / freshen them up (not straight across chop) before they reach the grown out length. But that's up to the individual. That might have saved me from getting as much cut off as I did when I did go to get that 96 trim.

For those who have layers that are already past the shoulders I'd say just do what you can stand to do. Either S&D, trims, cut straight, or just leave alone.

Whether it's acceptable in society or not I never would have worn any barrettes or pins or anything like that but at least that's an option for those who do not mind wearing those.

I think like any other period of growing out hair its a good time to just experiment. Go buy a fancy clip, slide in comb, barrette, etc. Just have fun if you can. Maybe small braids would be fun?

Maybe you'll invent something by playing around?

Anyway, to each their own. That's the best answer I can give.

Girl, you still have your layers?? I still have a few, but they're so long now they hardly matter. You didn't have more cut in, did you???

How are you these days?? Never get to see you much lately. :bluesmile :bluesmile :bluesmile

I think it's going to take about a year and a half before I trim the hair to all one length. Originally I thought about blending, but I couldn't find anyone I could trust with the cutting. Of course, every once in awhile, I think that I should cut to the shortest layer and then cut it all off. :uhh:

Now, the plan is to grow until my hair hits classic length, and then cut at the shortest layers, which will hopefully be around waist length.

OK, but is that really funny? :no

I *would* be growing mine out still, but I cut off 4 inches of hair instead. So now I'm growing my length back.

But Kimmy- I didn't even realize you have layers. You must have really thick hair. Maybe you should keep them- it looks just beautiful right now

Lexy, no thick hair here. Uh-uh. But I think a little layering at the bottom gives the illusion of thicker hair (for me, anyway). So I am going to keep a couple near the bottom.

Thank you for the nice compliment!!!! :flower:

I like my layers. I have thin hair and they really make it fuller. Even when my hair was waist length I had long layers and got more compliments on my hair then than when it was all one length.

I put Trim regularily, but less than your growth rate so you're 'moving forward' because I don't think I could bear chopping it all off to one length right now! Although I haven't exactly been doing a good job of trimming the bottom later to let the top layer catch up...ehhh.

I wouldn't be brave enough to chop off all the layers (it would put me at just above the shoulders).

I've put myself on an eight month schedule - I go for a trim then and take 2 inches off the very bottom and quarter to a half an inch off the layers.

Has anybody tried removing layers by just trimming the bottom until the layers caught up ? How did this work and did the layers have any major splits/damage by then ? (I'm getting impatient with my hair, grow, grow, grow !)

I like what Meg said, just cut once a year and let them take care of themselves.

But I voted reach BSL then cut back and let grow.

I haven't trimmed in 9 months.

I guess I'm just confused!

That stupid layers make my ends look thinner, I want them dead. But if I cut my hair to get rid of them I'd go back to bra-strap!! Could you imagine after all that growing I can't do such a thing so now I try to get along eith them until I reach my first goal. My first goal is mid thigh length , then I'd stay at that length for some years and continue my way with a big volume on the ends to my ankles. I love long hair soo much :cloud9:

I am choosing to grow them out, trimming regularly but less than my hair grows. Not as immediately satisfying as cutting it all one length but not as traumatic either. My hair still feels like it is getting longer even if my bangs/layers don't fit in with the rest of the length.

I voted get to goal and then trim til even, but I really didn't mean it. The other next colsest option was BSL and then trim til even, but I am aiming for waist length and then wait on the rest to catch up! My goal is classic and I would rather it all be one length when it gets there. but BSL is too short for me to wait that long for the rest to grow out.

I had several layers in my hair and I just kept trimming the bottom and not the layers until they caught up:smile:

I think growing to BS and then slowly trimming them away is best.
