View Full Version : What is it that causes you to change products/routines?

As in, what thing do you always want to fix about your hair?

For me, I'm a sucker for anything that promises less frizz and more shine. You'd think I'd have learned by now that there isn't really a miracle product or routine and that my hair doesn't really *ever* be non-frizzy and shiny, but no -- if I see a product promising those things, or a routine promising them, I frequently try or buy, unless I remember to remind myself that there is no miracle product or routine. Even then, it's sometimes a fight. :)

So ... what does your miracle product or routine change about your hair?

Cheers,
Jonobie

I fortunately don't have any severe problems, so i'm not often looking for miracles (knock on wood!). But, I am synesthetic and have very deep and strange responses to products on the color/scent/feeling end, so I generally can only use a product once, as in one bottle. I connect the products I am using at the time to everything going on in my life: for instance, I can't even smell Herbal Essences products because I was going through a rough breakup when I used them. And I can't use Willow Lake products because I was depressed and upset with a long-time friend when I used them. Each new product is a cause for excitement to me, and I love the bathing ritual that involves them. My hair seems to agree with me, and a product seldom works well for me twice, even if my senses will accept it.

So, in looking for a miracle product, I look for something new with a different scent and feel to it, and, of course, the ingredients have to fit within a certain range, too, as I prefer natural things.

Of course, if they came out with a product called "Anti-Twig and Sproingle Serum that Smells Delicious and Makes Your Hair Grow a Foot a Month", i'd be the first in line to buy it!

Well, when I hear people rave about how soft this product has made their hair, or especially how moisturized their hair feels since they've started using this new routine, that always seems to get me. I tend to have really dry ends and am ALWAYS on the lookout for anything that'll help remedy this problem.

Since coming to this board over a year ago, I've tried so many different products and many different routines. Some have worked and others haven't. Some have only worked temporarily. I'm always up for trying out something new. :D

I always look for more moisture! It's not that my hair is very dry, but I'm always afraid it might go dry one day and then get split ends etc... This makes me a sort of product junkie... Whenever a products promises moisture and it seems to me that it sounds more moisturising than the product I'm currently using I feel I just have to buy it...

Always searching for something better. I'm always looking for more moisture and more shine and anything that will help lessen the amount of split ends I get. I read everything everyone has to say about their hair routines and have tried a great many of the ideas. I love trying new products but only very rarely make a repeat purchase. There is always something new to try. I guess what I want is Pantene looking hair without using Pantene. My hair did not like it at all. I have been tempted to give the new formulation a try but I'm afraid to. So I'm still on my quest for shiney silky moisturized hair.

I look for something to cut down on frizz, increase shine, be simple and readily available. Im not hoping to find a miracle product though...rather a miracle routine. Products can be discontinued...

I'm always looking for all natural products that will moisturize my poor dry hair. If the igredients list some kind of strange chemical, then I'm not using it! If they have all kinds of herbs and oils, I'm all for it. I've pretty much given up trying to find a product to get rid of my frizz - I've decided that no product is powerful enough to combat my hair.

but the biggest thing is I want something new.

but for the most part, I like to try something new and then I'm always looking for the miracle that we're all looking for.

We are all looking for some of the same things, like more shine and less frizz.

Sometimes I try different things, like the CG routine, because some people have great results (even some wavies). Someone else's routine does not always work for me.

I am also looking for things that bring my waves out. Lately (how embarrassing to admit) I am looking for a product/routine to combat the itchies and flakies.

My latest change in routine is to use Avalon Organics Tea Tree/Mint Shampoo and conditioner. I have only used it a few times, but so far I like it. If it does help, I may write a review on it. Time will tell.

We all just want "perfect" hair, don't we?

Well I ujust found that synthetic products do the most damage for my hair. They're awful for my hair type in general.
So I like all natural things.
I think that's it. :)

I am always looking for something that will give my hair, most importantly lots of body. Second importantly, big-time shine. Third importantly, not dry it out. Truth is, I'm just a big ole' product junkie.

If the Avalon shampoo doesn't work for you, may I suggest Nizoral AD? I swear by that shampoo for dandruff. My scalp is r-e-a-l-l-y sensitive and with me trying all of the different products recommended on the board, I've had my share of scalp problems that end up in either my scalp breaking out or just getting, like you said, itchy and flakey. The Nizoral clears it up right away. Two uses'll do the trick! :D

I haven't switched products in over a month- so that's a new record for me. I used to use something different EVERY time I washed.

The clincher for me now is something that's 100% natural, holistic, no chemicals- zero, zip, nadda.

I want LOTS of shine. I am obsessed with shiny hair.

I want tangle free hair.

And lastly but not least- STRONG hair.

I am staying on my routine, because I have all these things now and don't want to change!

tangle free counts for alot too. Oh lets not forget a silkey finish. Gee I ask for quite a bit from my hair products don't I?

Yes thats me too. I hear something on here about products that make hair smooth, shiny and provide lots of moisture, so out I go to try it! They don't always work for me and some products I've discovered on my own (Kusco-Murphy and De Lorenzo) work wonderfully.

I agree, I also seek "perfect hair" but it probably won;t happen!

I tend to switch products looking for the right mix that will moisturize my hair without weighing it down. That is hard because my hair needs a lot of moisture but since it is fine textured, it can get weighed down really easily. Many of the products for fine hair are not moisturizing enough. So I end up always buying dry hair products. It's tricky finding the right ones.

Sometimes I switch products out of boredom. But, mainly I want something NATURAL that will reduce frizzies (I know they won't ever completely vanish), won't strip my hair, will moisturize without weighing down or overoiling my hair, and will help reduce tangles. So far, I've found these "miracle cures" in Morrocco Method products. I hope I'll stick with them for the long haul. But, of course, someone always metions something new to tempt me. Maybe I just switch cuz I'm fickle? :DD

LOL! Okay. For the past month, I have been rotating Morrocco Method shampoos and (have yet to try their conditioners) before rinsing out the MM shampoo, I slather on my "homemade" conditioner of shikakai/ Amla/ Marshmallow herbs. I cover with a plastic baggie and take my shower, so it's on for about 15 minutes. Then I rinse it out for a few minutes in COLD water (I wash under the faucet so really... no warmish water even touches my hair), and do a final rinse of either Sage, Rosemary, Nettles or Fenugreek tea.

If I am going to be wearing my hair up, I'll follow with some oil and essential oil (usually jojoba with Ylang Ylang, Rosemary, Lavendar) OR if I am going to be wearing my hair down, I'll use AO's Jasmine shine spray.

EVERY single cotton pickin time I have used this routine, my hair has turned out perfect. But if I stray and use something like a conditioner, my hair is *definately* going into a bun.

But, you've got to bear in mind that my hair is opposite of yours. Pixna's hair is curly (yes, I said curly, Pixna, even if you deny that) and she likes the MM, and Zoya like's the Shikakai and Marshmallow.

I guess I will need to be alittle more specific on my Journal page, huh? i was trying to be quick, but I see i'll have to go back and add a few things.

Thanks for asking though! hope you find you perfect routine, Dulci!!

Less broken hairs and white dots. Well, that's about it. But if I get these under control, the result is smoother, less tangled hair, with thicker ends.

I don't aim for instant fixes, I look for products that will benefit my hair in the long term. Still searching, btw, but much closer now than I was a year ago :)

HEY, who are you calling "curly," buster?!! ;) Actually, I take that as a compliment, though I wish my hair was truly curly. TBear's humid day pic was as close to mine as I've seen. Did you know that one of the MM conditioners has skikakai extract in it? Yep, it's true! :) Although it sounds like you make some pretty good homemade conditioners and may not need the MM. I like them, as I find my homemade stuff takes too long to make and never works as good as the products I buy. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I'm happy! :D

I'm always looking for something that will cure my splits/white dots/breakage problem. Other things would be added thickness, and less flyaways. It would be great to find a a product that gives weight to my fine hair without actually weighing it down LOL!

The most common reason for me changing my routine is boredom/just wanting a change. I love variety, and I often feel better about my hair if I use a new product with an exciting name/texture/smell/bottle, even if the results are no better than what I am used to :D

Why do I change? The grass is always greener on the other side! That and boredom. I try not to buy something new until I've used (or almost used) up something else. Hubby doesn't like being attacked by bottles when he gets in the shower. :D

Actually, every time I've switched shampoos and conditioners I end up going back to Therappe and Ensure as my favorite staples. Nothing works quite like them for me (for regular washing and conditioning). I will be trying out the GM system any day now. Just have to get to ordering it!

but I DO intend to try their conditioners. I didn't notice the extract in one the ingredient lists. you say they're light- and that's what I am looking for. Something i can mist onto dry hair and still wear it down. I guess that means you're still liking them, huh?

Yes, I am liking them a LOT!! I am very, very, VERY happy with them (can you tell? LOL!). The difference between the MM products (including the conditioners) and others I've tried is striking. I especially like that MM has conditioners that are so simple and pure and easy to use and there aren't tons of options. The simple rotation is very enjoyable. As you might guess, I highly recommend them. :DD

Hey Jonobie!-

When I use a pre-made conditioner, my hair is waaay too heavy- the hair kinda has TOO much moisture- is harder to detangle, and doesn't "feel" right. It doesn't have that light, airy look to it. Oh, 3 washes ago for example, I used AO's GPB and put it on my scalp... my hair turned out bad AND I shedded ALOT. I mean like... probably 100 hairs... so I rewashed and did my "good" routine, and my shedding stopped. I only loose like 1 or 2 hairs each time I brush my hair. That's a pretty profound difference, and it can't be coincedence, it happens everytime.

Thanks for the info, Valerie!

I'm still waiting on fromnaturewithlove to get the Shakakai -- I'm*this* close to being able to switch over to a similar natural routine. :-D It sounds like it really works for you, and my hair has been responding well to reduced conditioning and more gentle washing, too.

Cheers,
Jonobie
