View Full Version : Spring Garden Pics!!!
Lexy March 15th, 2004, 03:14 PM Here is what I did all weekend:
This is my crabapple tree. It's the only tree that was in my yard when we bought the house. I planted the other 29

This is our patio. It was a huge concrete slab when we moved in. We started to take it out with a wrecking bar and realized there was a chain link fence *inside* the concrete. Took about a year to get out.

And this is my little native garden. Most of these plants will get to be at least 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide. This is also a lovely shot of my woodchips. DH and I have spent most weekends since November trying to get the woodchips spread out. We had 10 yards of them, and they're *almost* done now.

Maggie March 15th, 2004, 05:00 PM Ooooo hey!
Did y'all see that blue sky? And the flowers on that crab apple tree?
And the green plants?
Lexy, I'm green witha envy!(and that's about the only thing that's green here in Newfoundland)
Your yard looks so nice and especially knowing how much hard work you put into it.
Even though there's still quite a bit of snow here, we noticed four of my jonquils are peeping through that hard frozen ground. They're up close to the house where there's not any snow. I'm so looking forward to spring.
Thanks for the pictures, Lexy.

Kat March 15th, 2004, 08:06 PM Ah, lovely....your crabapple tree reminds me of "my" redbud tree...when I was young my mom bought that tree, I liked that one a lot even though the guy at the nursery said it probably wouldn't last very long because it had a split trunk close to the bottom and he said it would split totally in half. But, being a weird and sentimental child (and I still am), I totally insisted on that one and my mom finally gave in. And now it's getting to be a BIG tree and still all in one piece!! :)
I love your native garden and am sitting her imagining what it will all look like when full-grown!
LongRed March 16th, 2004, 01:09 AM OH WOW! Bring on springtime! :)
Your hair looks very pretty too! :)
Queenie March 16th, 2004, 02:56 AM That looks so nice! Can't wait for the :sun: to get out here
Grenwich March 16th, 2004, 04:51 AM Beautiful.
Gardening is truly a satisfying pastime. I have a bunch of daffodils and lillies poking up right now, and we're forecast 8 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. Maybe it will be the last of the snow, and spring will arrive soon....

Hairstorm March 16th, 2004, 01:28 PM Lovely, Lexy! Your hard work really shows. Especially no weeds anywhere, not even oxalis! Is that a cat in your native garden picture?
With our heat wave, it's hard to remember that most folks are still having winter. I actually broke a sweat at 8:30 this morning walking DS to school. On our street the magnolia trees are in full bloom, along with some cherries and plums. The daffodils are about finished and the tulips are on the decline too. The wisterias are breaking buds. But when our summer fog pattern sets in, then I'll be reaching for a sweater when most of the country gets its heat. No growing eggplant, okra or peppers for me!
Lexy March 16th, 2004, 04:21 PM We just picked our first strawberries today (yay for wild strawberries!) and our fruit trees and wisteria are going crazy. I'm worried though, because I know we will get rain soon. I just hope it's enough time for the flowers on the fruit trees to get polinated (I *need* my peaches!)
Honey Mane March 16th, 2004, 05:12 PM Thank you Lexy for showing us what spring looks like.
We got over a foot of snow here yesterday. More coming tonight. *Sigh*
Chamomile betty March 17th, 2004, 07:38 AM Very beautiful Lexy!
I love to garden. It's just snowed, iced, and rained on us over the last few days. Maybe in about 2 weeks I can start.

Heidi March 21st, 2004, 07:30 AM Lovely garden, Lexy! And I love seeing fruit trees in bloom! Having just driven the length of the state, I was thankful that I had the opportunity to do it in the spring--everyone's gardens were doing so well. I waved as I passed!
You cold weather folks need some greenhouses! Even mini-ones...
busnutmedic March 21st, 2004, 11:44 AM Ahhh! It's brown here right now. Brown and white. I started zinnia, bachelor buttons, and pansies in the house a few days ago :)

terri March 23rd, 2004, 06:49 AM Lexy if your fruit trees are small enough you can get a soft artists paint brush and polinate them yourself by brushing the flowers one by one. Obviously this won't work on huge trees, but on small trees with a few flowers it will. That way, as long as they are already producing pollen, you can insure your trees get polinated before it rains.

That's a great idea!
I think this year we'll be safe (we'll have rain on Thursday, which should be enough time), but I'll have to remember that for next year!
