View Full Version : The amazing talking cat....
Peanut March 10th, 2004, 03:30 PM So we've had Deliah for about 9 months. She's almost exactly a year old and still extremely hyper most of the time, but she's beginning to show some of what she'll be like when she matures. She's eternally curious about EVERYTHING, but can be very gentle when reminded. She knows her name and "No," comes when you call her, and when will play fetch if she's in the right mood. (In case you can't tell, I'm absolutely in love with my baby .)
Anyway, as she has gotten older, she's developed a definite vocabulary to tell us what's going on. We get fussed at for not paying enough attention (meh!) to her, and she'll tell us when she wants to look at what we're holding (mer?). She'll ask us about noises she hears (me-eh?) and tell us when someone's at the door (mow!)
We also have Miles (our 4-year old Persian), but he's been mad at us ever since we got Deliah and has only recently begun talking to us again. He has a complete different vocabulary, mostly involving a lot of trills and short chirps, but since he's Persian, he's just not as vocal.
So, who else has a chatty-catty? Or doggy? Birdies?
SagittarianTiger March 10th, 2004, 03:38 PM Awwwwwwwwwww *saji is all gooey feeling* i love kitties!
OK... my three are all different.
Eliza.. is my oldest, but we adopted her last. She is the jabber mouth! Good lord, I wish I could type out everything she says in her meow's but i'll stick to what she does in english to save time! She will yell (yes yell) at me when I'm not paying attention to her and she wants attention (bad mommy!), she has a different meow for "please move *whatever it is i'm doing* so she can lie down on my lap* , she will answer you when you say "hello" , and tell you how she is doing if you ask her. She is adorable!
Bach is my youngest. He will sing to the birds, and will meow at me if he is hungry, or he wants to play, and really go off on some sort of kitty cursing if I ignore him when he brings me his toy.
Mozart is the middle, but the first cat Mr. Saji and I adopted. He is QUIET. Even his MEOW is quiet. His meow is a whisper. And he rarely uses it. He will say Hello to Mr. Saji when he is told Hi to first, but only when he is in the mood (normally when he is sitting on the toilet lid watching Mr.Saji shave). He doesn't talk to me much. He just knows He will get his way.
Speaking of.. I need to go. Eliza is yelling at me for attention!
Aren't animals the bestest?
gabiwags March 10th, 2004, 04:40 PM Boy Dog  He's half collie which explains most of it but he has got to be the most vocal dog I have ever known. He vocalizes when he's happy and he is happy a LOT. He barked all the way from California to Oregon - and back :dizzy: . He wore a bark collar for many years to he learned to regulate himself - a trip to the store wasn't worth a zap but prong horned antelopes were worth any amount of zap ...pls note this is not cruel because we test all devices on our own bodies before putting them on our fuzzballs ...
impchild March 11th, 2004, 03:42 AM our cat of many names (stevie, cleopatra, miss kitty, or dizzy depending on who you ask) is the most vocal cat i have ever seen. like a siamese but not whiney. she lets us know that she is "starving to death and we must feed her immediately", that we are walking too close to where she is laying, that we need to follow her into the bedroom and lay down so she can lay on both of us, and if we go away for a day or so we get a 10 min. lecture when we get home followed with us being ignored for an appropriate time.
when i was younger we had a cat who would ask to go out. he would sit at the door and say "mmrr-ooout" :bluebiggr it was just the cutest thing... i have tried to teach this on but i didn't meet her till she was 7 so she is balking at learning new things from me.
Igor March 11th, 2004, 05:58 AM Ow… so cute! I want a talking cat
My lovebird Bølle “spoke” a little
High pitched scream: “Help me mommy!” (He was blind the last four years we had him so he could easily get lost and call out to get help :-( )
“Dok” meaning “I wanna!” Get petted/ want a nut/ want to destroy that pencil in your hand/ generally want attention etc
“Dek” meaning “No!” I don’t want to get picked up/having you disturb my sleep/ have you stop petting me etc
Grenwich March 11th, 2004, 06:54 AM Mr. Jack is very vocal, particularly when the hiking boots come out ( the signal for walking in the woods) and when the food bowl is empty, and when belly scratches are required, and then it's full over flat on the back, with a very satisfied rrrrrhhhhhhhhh, rrrhhhhhhhhhh, arrrrgggghhhhh. He knows he has his humans wrapped firmly around the paw.

Kat March 11th, 2004, 08:00 AM The handsome black kitty in my avatar is Tarot, my talkative boy. He very much loves to just yap yap yap, I think just for the purpose of hearing his own voice. He says "mrow" a lot. "Prrrrrrt, prrrrrrrrrrrt...." means he wants my other kitty to play with him (she rarely does because he plays too rough). And of course there's the seemingly-universal kitty "I see a yummy bird!" sound, which is rather hard to describe.
Honestly, this cat will just walk around the house meowing loudly for no apparent reason. He keeps my mom awake at night!
Starfilly March 11th, 2004, 02:32 PM It's so funny reading all these...my critters have little vocabularies of their own as well, but what never ceases to amaze me is how much Simba, our lab mix, understands English. The other animals know a word or two, but it's scary how much she knows. We have to be VERY careful what we say around her. If you mention the word "walk" in casual conversation, she goes nuts. She knows all the family members' names, so you can say, "Go find Ed" and she trots off. My mom tells her, "Go wake up the kids" and she comes in our rooms in the morning. If you ask her, "Is Daddy home yet?" she'll run to the door and check, then report back to you. She knows all sorts of food words, like crackers, cheese (her favorite!), toast, milk, dish, supper, breakfast, etc. She also knows outside, inside, leash, go, stop, car ride, bath (she runs if she hears that one!), kitchen, rug, workshop (that's where she sleeps, so if you tell her to go the workshop she'll run in), excuse me (seriously! She doesn't always move, but she at least looks at you), plus the usual doggy commands like sit and stay. She's so cool. :bluebiggr

Oooh Yes, Bach does this all the time when he's looking outside. My other two for some reason don't see the point to it. It's so cute!
sgrace March 11th, 2004, 03:18 PM This is a great thread!
I love hearing that I'm not the only one who talks to my pets.
Tue is the younger kitty. He does not vocalize much but when he does it's usually a deep "brow" sound like a frog croaking. He's really small for a male so this makes it more comical. Tue was my SO's cat before we lived together so they have their own conversations. He can snort at Tue and Tue will make this weird sound where he blows air out his nose in a puff. Seriously I just heard it for the first time this morning it is the strangest sound I've ever heard a cat make.
Rousseau does actually talk *Siamese style*. He says mama among other things. He was my cat before the move-in and makes very clear to everyone that I belong to him.
Both cats make that funny *talk to the birds* noise we call it barking at the birds. I can make them more crazy if I do the sound too.
We also have a parakeet and he is pretty young but learning to talk. He says *Tue* and *kitty* to the cats and makes tons of noise when we play music.
Animals ARE the BEST! I can't wait until we get our puppy. After we get married we're planning to adopt a Australian Shepherd/Border collie mix puppy from our friends litter. Cant WAIT! :) :) :)

Mariah March 13th, 2004, 02:23 PM One of my all-time favorite talking cats belonged to my voice teacher -- a big, black cat named "Jeffery" -- he used to sneak into lessons and start singing along!! Both my teacher and her husband were opera singers, so he came from a musical family, and was quite the talent himself!
My babies are pretty quiet...probably becuase they are doted on so much, they don't need to make noise to get their point across... Tibbald (my big orange boy) will make a "mrreep!" sound when he wants me to pick him up and cuddle him, but he's feeling too lazy to come to me (as in, "Mom, I'm on top of the fridge and I want you to come get me down and coddle me...")...Maggie makes a "Meep" sound when she is about to jump onto my lap...and Tibbald makes a coo-ing sound (like a little dove) when he is content and ready to snuggle down at night...
nastasska March 15th, 2004, 02:19 PM My Missy likes to talk a lot :) Well actually she prefers to yell at me.I get yelled at for all sorts of things.Hurry up let me in/out. Don't you dare eat that give it to me NOW!I want to play.Leave me alone I have better things to do and so on.Sooty is much quieter than that but none the less forcefull! She sneezes at me when she is annoyed or wants something and if I'm too slow I get a shove on the leg. They both understand English better than I do and can spell!
Kat March 15th, 2004, 07:51 PM Tarot is a music lover too! He always loved listening in on my violin lessons in high school and my teacher got a kick out of him. He recognized the sound of my violin case opening and he would come running in the room and start meowing. He even had favorite songs, and he'd roll around on the floor and start singing along. He'd complain when I stopped playing!
Or maybe I just really sucked and he was crying in agony.
Teacherbear March 16th, 2004, 07:35 AM I am just now getting to read this delightful thread!! ;) LOL
Aren't pets great! :) http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/tiere/catmilk.gif
Kitten, the girl kitty, SCREAMS, S-C-R-E-A-M-S at my hubby and she absolutely ADORES him!! I'll call home and he'll say, "Kitten has something to say about that." Then he leans over and puts the phone to her and she SCREAMS! ;) LOL
Hubby and she also like to play the puffing game. Hubby will blow puffs of air. She respond by screaming! hahaha it is so funny to hear! She also screams because she knows he has the spinach out and she is demanding some (yes, she is a vegetarian cat! . . . . ok, she would be if we let her - she loves spinach).
She is not a polite cat. She lays in the floor, right in the middle, or in the walk way, which ever is most inconvenient for the humans! Stepping on her (accidentally) only makes her meow (not scream), stand up, turn around and look at you like, "what were you thinking?? didn't you see me laying there??" We call her Bad Kitty, Screamer, Carpet Shark, Fluff Face.
Gaby (rhymes with Baby) doesn't really talk a lot. He certainly doens't talk with the volume Kitten does. Instead he say "rah" while just barely opening his mouth. If you "rah" back at him, he'll stand up and look intently into your eyes and continue the Rah-conversation. It is funny to see how loud he can be (though it is quite) while opening his mouth as little as possible! ;) LOL
They both "chortle" at the birds. There is a cat who comes by the porch door/window. We know he is there because it sounds like someone is killing the cats!
Every now and then one or the other cat will make that pathetic "I'm all alone in this big apartment and no one is around, poor pitiful me" scream! All they want to know is that you are there. It always freaks me out!
Funny story: My parents use to have a seal point Himalayan. She was a real talker. One day, my parents accidentally closed her up in their bedroom. When Mom got home that evening, she let Misty out. As they were walking down the hall, Misty was slighly in front of Mom. She had her head turned around and was just reprimanding my Mom for locking her in there all day. They were coming to a part of the hall where a little hall-let goes off to the bathroom. Misty veered off right there and walked smack into the wall. She stopped. Shook her head. Then continued yelling at Mom. It wasn't too effective because Mom was then laughing because Misty was so into being mad that she didn't see the wall! ;) Poor kitty! BUT, Mom never locked her in the bedroom after that! ;) LOL

g_michelle March 16th, 2004, 12:41 PM Our talking cat, Zack, lived to age 17. He would say, "Hello," "Mama" and "I love you." It was pretty freaky to have him rub on your leg and say, "Hello!"
Here's a cute story. We had nice neighbors with 3 children. One day I told Susan (the mother) about Zack and how he talked. What I didn't know until a long time later was that she went back home and told her family I was nutso! Well, one morning, long after our conversation, it was about 5:00 in the morning when our telephone rang and woke us up. It was Susan, telling me, "You cat is calling for his Mama." I ran outside to find Zack confronting another neighbor cat at our fence between the houses!
Susan told us she kept hearing "Mama, mama", so she got up to check her youngest, who was sound asleep in bed! She admitted she thought I was kooky until she had first-hand experience hearing Zack talking!
Zack had liver disease, and with steroids, he lived another year and a half to give us plenty of joy and time to say good-bye. In his last year, we bought a bird bath for the back yard. Zack was such a large cat, he could stand with his back feet on the ground and take long drinks from the bird bath! I got a wonderful photo of this that is hanging in the middle bedroom.

Come now, don't you know that it is YOU who are impolite for wanting to walk around your own house?? Us humans, I tell you...my Pouncie likes to lie on whatever book or paper I am working on.

LOL, I am stubbornly holding onto the belief that this is MY apartment and not hers! She *does* like to remind me how insignificant I am on a regular basis! ;) LOL
