I live in Chicago...(after 10 years in SLC, UT) and can find just about ANYTHING.....so...my husband and I have been really into Indian cooking and have been frequenting the shops on Devon (Indian/Pakistani) and I have noticed this hair oil in a green bottle.....and was wondering if ANYONE on this board has tried any of the Indian oils for hair.....My hair is fine, as opposed to coarse, and I worry that the oils may be too heavy for me......

hey..and I just wanted to send thanks to all here for providing such wonderful advice and support !!! Without it, I probably would have had a SUPER-PMS hair day and cut all of it off in a rage.....but since hanging out here...(and listening to my x-long hair husband tell me, "you'll regret it!!") I have had less and less "compulsions" to destroy something that has taken me about 5 years to attain...

thanks ya'll!!!!

Was it the Vitaka? I used that. Since the climate here is significantly cooler it had solidified in the bottle, so I warmed the bottle in a pan of water until the oil liquified, gave it a good shake to redistribute the ingredients and then poured it into a wide mouthed container. It solidified there and I used it by taking a tiny amount on my finger, rubbing it between my hands to liquify and apply. I liked it very well, but then I noticed that the expiration date on the bottle was two years out of date. (The store was tiny, so I think they just kept beauty stock around rather than continually importing it.) So, I stopped using it until I can go back and look for a fresher bottle. A few of us have also tried using Amla cleaning powder with good effect. There was a thread about it not too long ago if you do a search.
I hope you enjoy your experiment.

I have. I have heard of the Vatika. And there is also Amla very good. And there is another Bhrainji (sp?) And Brahmi. All of those I really liked very much. My hair is fine but it's also thick. But I was very happy with the results. You can often have much success finding these oils online as well. Perhaps look at www.dabur.com just to see what oils are available before you go shopping.

Interesting... I've never seen Indian stores in this area. It's surprising because I live close to Columbus, which has a large selection of shops. I haven't seen any there, either. I became interested in Indian stores after hearing about the good food. The oils also sound cool. Jojoba is an oil that many fine-haired women seem to like because it is a light oil. I have medium hair, and I don't think it's doing enough for me. It would be great to live in an area where there is hair stuff, foods, etc. from all different cultures. We have a Japanese steakhouse, and that's about it. :D

I have been using Dabur Amla hair oil for 8 yrs now...I use it as a prewash oil, 'coz it's very heavy! Sometimes I use a oil called Navratan hair oil...which I loved when I visited India this time. It's also a heavy oil for prewash oiling....but it reallly gives a nice cool feeling :) and I love to use it for massaging my scalp..it feels wonderful! The only prob. with buying at indian stores is some oils are pretty old...beyond the expiry date! U need to check before u buy something :? Once I bought a oil called Ramtirth oil which I used to use regularly during my school days...after coming home I saw that it was abt 10yrs old  Most of the oils can be got online and they aren't that expensive! So u cud try that too.

I live in a very WASP-y town with absolutely nothing ethnic (despite the fact that there is somewhat of an Asian/Indian population due to our chemical company), and go to school in a teeny hick town that has nothing period....and I keep thinking, "what's this about going to your local Indian grocery store? Haha!" I don't even know how far I'd have to drive to find one of those...I've been so culturally deprived... :)

Did someone call my name ?? :D

Well I too use the Dabur vatika hair oil occasionally (light green plastic bottle)

It is coconut hair oil with henna and alma and some lime too!!
Its light and not very heavy for my hair...

The others like brahmi amla and all..I didn't really like those as they have too strong smell/perfume..than I can handle... :)
