View Full Version : DOWN with Glamour Magazine!!!! (venting)
magpiedee March 11th, 2003, 05:25 AM That's right, Glamour has YET AGAIN bashed a longhair. In their huge "Do's and Don'ts"section, a woman with long hair (looks like classic length?) got bashed and told not to "channel Rapunzel". It makes me so hateful, to see all those women with their over-processed hair being given the thumbs up-- that's right girls, keep going to the salon every month for $80 a pop! You don't look good with your own, natural hair! While the hair may not be in my favorite style, it is still tacky of them to always show models with long hair and then bash real women with it.
ARGH! Sometimes, I just hate fashion.
Too irritated to say more.

Perhaps their inconsistencies need to be pointed out!!! ;)
KT March 11th, 2003, 05:57 AM That is one of the main reasons I never read those types of magazine (except if I am in a waiting room LOL!). I get so frustrated with being bombarded by images that suggest my natural hair, skin, nails and figure just aren't good enough, that I should always want to change something, even if just for the sake of change. I don't like being told that there is only one type of beauty to which I should aspire to. I also object to the idea that you have to spend a fortune twice a year for a new and fashionable wardrobe for each season just to look good.
Me, I wear the same clothes year after year, and I wear my hair and makeup in a way that suits *me*, not some unattainable ideal of what someone else thinks 'me' should be. And I think I look rather good for it :)
DweamGoiL March 11th, 2003, 06:15 AM I hate fashion mags. I stopped reading them so long ago.
I also agree with you Magpie_D...they make one feel as if gorgeous long hair has can only be achieved by anorexic looking models...don't they know malnutrition hinders hair growth?
However, this is what distinguishes the women from the girls "your own opinions and not letting others intimidate you into submission".

As opposed to getting in touch with my inner marionette? “Oh, please tell me what to look like, my stupid wooden puppet head can’t think for itself!”
I’m with KT, to heck with them and their fashion fascism.
Feye March 11th, 2003, 07:20 AM I'm with KT. I've stopped reading magazines like that, because they always make me feel bad about myself. But that's their secret, that's how they sell. They put you down to be able to build you up again with self esteem. If you read them you feel bad, and then you have to read their "How to build your self esteem in five steps" articles to feel good again. A vicious circle.
Nutswmn March 11th, 2003, 09:09 AM but did you notice in cosmo (maybe not sure. could have been an issue of glamour) they asked what kind of hair do guys like most. most guys responded that they like long hair.
merryrose31 March 11th, 2003, 10:19 AM enjoy. I would like to have some idea of what's in style each season, and I would enjoy tips about household mangament and interviews with interesting women. I would enjoy pictures of pretty gardens and some usable recipes and maybe some sewing tips.
Instead, it's all about impossible standards for appearance and tiresome how to articles. It seems to me that all the how-to articles are re-cycled. And, I hesitate to pick up a magazine that promises that if I read it, I will lose ten pounds in two weeks, make my husband fall in love with me all over again, completely organize my house and my life, get a raise from my boss, acheive the perfect wardrobe, and cook award winning Christmas cookies.
I do think that the magzines have a double standared regarding long hair -- As someone said, the models all have long hair, but each issue always has makeovers where the subjects are encouraged to cut their locks. Also, I can't stand all those "ten things your doctor hasn't told you that can cost you your life" articles. So many magazines make it sound like we're all walking around with deadly diseases and our doctors are not telling us that we're going to keel over at any moment. As someone with hypochondrial tendencies, I don't find this helpful. And, then, there's the issue as someone said of the magazines making you feel bad about yoruself and the irony of always including an article with corny tips to raise your self-esteem.
And, then there are the articles about how to look good at any age, with stop with the decade of the forties. (The models for each decade -20's, 30's, 40's, have progressively shorter hair) What about those millions of us who will pass out of our forties in a few years? Do we even exist in the minds of the magazines' demographics experts?
Maybe, we should all band together and do a magazine for long-haired readers.
Oh, I do sound cranky about this, don't I? Well, I'll just have to cite Pixna's "certifiably insane hair" defense.
Heidi March 11th, 2003, 10:26 AM enjoy. I would like to have some idea of what's in style each season, and I would enjoy tips about household mangament and interviews with interesting women. I would enjoy pictures of pretty gardens and some usable recipes and maybe some sewing tips.
I like Victoria Magazine for almost all of the reasons you just stated. :D
euphrasyne March 11th, 2003, 10:40 AM lol. I get the mags second hand from my mom. I love to read the "how to catch a man" articles; they are so funny. I read one to my husband onetime, and he said that if I was like that, he would have left me flat.

Kao March 11th, 2003, 11:38 AM I used to read a lot of fashion mags and things like Cosmo, but now... bah. They're sometimes funny, because of the errors or inconsistencies or just silliness in them...
Like those "Have an attractive back for all the backwards lowcut styles this summer!" articles that warn that anything more than 5 pound weights for their listed exercises will turn you into Arnold, or the idea that we, the readers, should see nothing wrong with dropping $80 on a white shirt that looks straight out of the men's department. (Where, of course, you could get a much nicer white shirt for half that.)
I would like a magazine like Merryrose described, though, especially if it really did have nice recipes and a lot of garden stuff.
Chamomile betty March 12th, 2003, 01:17 AM Victoria Magazine :)
http://www.victoriamag.com
for those interested
My subscription ran out a while ago and I really need to renwew. The articles where refreshing, had beautiful home and outside decorating ideas, their fashion and beauty tips are classic and romantic yet able to be worn by real women. You could copy the styles easily by shopping at your local stores be it JC Penny's or Walmart.
I dont read those crappy mags. If my mom pick one up from the store I will give her such a hard time.
For another decorating mag Country Living is another fav :)
Hmmm.... ya got me wanting to renew my subscription right now
