Hello there,
I was looking for a classroom pet to
have (probably not this year)
and heard that chinchillas are great
because they don't smell and
are, after becoming familiar with
people, very friendly. Does anyone
know more about these cute fellas?
Anyone have one?!!?!

Not to be negative, but you should think long and hard before getting a classroom pet. Oftentimes, animals become shy, grumpy, mean, can develop serious medical problems etc due to the lack of real attention they get. They are bombarded with noise 9-5 (nightime for most rodents) and then left alone at night when they would want to be out and about. That is assuming they are well taken care of (not to say that you wouldn't, but I have a rescued bunny and classroom animals can have terrible terrible stories). So, I guess what I'm saying is think about it, make sure you have someone who can take it home on the weekends, who is commited to taking care of it just as if it was at home.
As for chinchillas. . . any I"ve been exposed to have been sweethearts!

Thanks for your reply and yes, I agree with
you that classroom animals from some
people can be uncared for and in a sense,
abused.
I'll probably reconsider because day time is
their sleep time and that would be unfair
to him/her.
I would however, like to have one at my house
as I am a serious animal lover and those creatures
look so intriguing! :)

As house pets, I th ink chinchillas would be great. I know next to nothing about them, so definetly go research them before getting one (or two!) but I personally love that size rodent. My rabbit is a hoot and I love him to death. And chinchillas are adorable and seem very friendly. Definetly check them out on the web. I"m sure there are lots of resources and helpful sites about chinchillas as pets.
Make sure you post some pictures!
