How do you trim your hair?

And most importantly, where?

:?:

The option "I never trim my hair" does not include split ends search and destroy missions

I'm not voting because I use a combination of several, depending on how much I want off, when I last trimmed, and what my financial situation is.

Sometimes I go to a local family-run salon down the road, if I want a biggish trim but have very little money.
If I am feeling rich, and want a biggish trim, or am preparing for a special occasion, or am feeling very down and need a hair-ego-boost, I go to the GM salon in London.
If I just want a tiny dusting, as a preference I'll get a friend to do it if it is convenient, or if not do it myself.

I didn't vote because I am torn between the last two choices. When I have trimmed, I have done it myself (using YOUR method, Feye! :D ). Prior to that, I went to an ordinary salon -- not one that specializes in long hair. But it's been quite a while since I have gone there. I am now on the "No Trim Track," and I haven't had a trim in nine months. So, I wasn't sure which button to select, as I've been somewhat all across the board, even though I'm not trimming at all right now. So, is that the one I should choose? :?: :?

i have been doing the self trimming with good success. i use a variation of your method, feye.

last weekend i wanted a slightly more hefty trim, so i asked my bf to do it, but he took off a ton of hair, which is ok- it was all hair i wanted to cut off eventually (dyed&fried). but now i feel violated somehow, so i think i'm going to stick with self trimming for awhile.

who knew i would get so attached to an inch or two of hair :!: :?:

holy crappola, what was she thinking!

from the look of how long your hair is now, i'm guessing that was a while ago, but sheesh, still an awful experience!

I've been going to the same stylist for about 9 years. I'm really trying to work up the nerve to try your method, Feye. My stylist has on ocassion cut off a smidge more than I've asked for (nothing like Brenda's ordeal  ), but my ends look so good when she's done, I'm really afraid to risk it myself.

The last time I went in for a salon trim, I went to a place that was listed under one of the "long hair friendly" salon places. The guy who cut my hair was just a doofus in general, but since he was supposedly the long hair expert I let him talk me into cutting my hair into a V-shape. Which turned out to be totally wrong for my hair, it just made my ends look scraggly. And of course I got no special advice on hair care, and when I asked about professional coloring he said I'd have to talk to their colorist, who wouldn't even answer a few simple questions without an appointment! All in all, I was NOT a happy longhair. :x

Since then I've trimmed several times using your U-shape method, Feye. It works pretty well for me, although last time I had trouble cutting off the v-tip of my hair by myself. (And there's no one in my household that I'd trust to cut a straight line! )

I'd like to eventually find a salon I could trust not to cut more than a fraction of an inch (maybe the Enchantress salon in Cleveland this summer?) But until then, I've sworn off trimming anyway to see if I can increase my length.

More than you ever wanted to know? My, how I ramble!

For KT and Pixna:

KT, I didn't think about adding a combination alternative... that would have been great to have. Maybe everyone can vote how they do most or the time. But I believe you vary it a lot so... Thanks for answering anyway :)

Pixna, I think you could choose the "no trims" answer, since I know your hair is growing and growing without trims. BTW, you've got the hair that would look lovely without blunt ends :)

I have been trimming my own hair since high school since a.) I'm a tightwad  , and b.) I know I won't cut too much off.

I only trim a couple of times a year now.

Well, I tried a few years back to do it myself and the results were not good at all...I don't think cutting my own hair is for me.

I usually trim my own hair in recent years. Feye, I used your method last week with great success!

I can't vote.

I get it trimmed at a GM salon, which in my mind is different from a generic salon. I have also had my hair trimmed at the barber's. If I ever decide to stop going to GM salons, I would go exclusively to a barber.

So mark me as 1/2 salon and 1/2 barber! :)

Thanks, Feye! I'll go post my vote now! I greatly appreciate your comment about my ends. When I first started to let my hair grow long (from a buzz cut!!), I went to a stylist for regular trims. She said that a lot of longhaired women like a "U" shaped hemline. I had never thought about that or noticed it before. I had that shape for a few years until I decided to try a blunt cut. I miss that "U" shape now, and I'm looking forward to my hair having a more natural hemline. It might make my braid more difficult to do, but I do think it will suit my hair better. Anyhow, I appreciate your words!

By the way, thank you for your notes! :D I'll be getting back to you soon -- I just have a quite a hectic day ahead.

Well, I haven't voted because I can't decide. :)

I used to go to a salon, which always did a great job until last time. Last time, my hair bloomed in split ends afterwards and the layers didn't look as nice as they had before. So I'm not really that interested in going back. Given that I did a search and destroy two or three weeks ago now, and my hair hasn't really had serious problems with split ends since then (and I'd never seen them prior to the visit), I'm thinking the stylist's scissors weren't sharp enough.

The problem is, when I next trim (and I don't know when that will be), I'm not sure whether I'll try to find a new salon to go to, return to the long hair salon I tried way back when, or whether I'll try it myself. I'm afraid of cutting unevenly if I try it myself, but I bought my scissors with the promise to myself that if I did one trim with them instead of going to the salon, they'd pay for themselves. :)

Cheers,
Jonobie

My sister usually trims my hair, but I've really been wanting to try Feye's method of self-trimming.

I'm in the same boat as Tresses... Kind of nervous about it!

I hardly ever trim my hair... but when I do, I get my mom to, because I hadn't heard of Feye's diy method! Next time it needs a trim, though, I'm going to try doing it myself.

I have had two trims since 2000. One last October at a regular hair salon, and one in Feb by a GM stylist. So I naturally chose 'at a salon'

When I feel the need for a trim, I might give Feye's instructions a try. I'm such a chicken though, I'll probably wait until my next GM treatment (yep, I wanna do it again) or the next 3 years, whichever comes first.

I didn't vote either, because I don't have a routine yet. I don't have a stylist (my former one being a razor-happy sociopath) and have just been trimming splits until I get some real length or need a trim very badly.

I go to the normal salon in our village (yes where all the old ladies go to get their perms :D ), because they have very good scissors and they take good care of their scissors. I'm too cheap to buy an expensive pair of scissors and too lazy to trim my own hair. I always just have them cut off a tiny little bit (except last month when I had to cut off more because of that darn candle), and they never cut off more than I say. I let them cut it dry and pay only 12,50 euro. That's ok, isn't it?

I voted husband does it for me, but I usually trim it to the correct length, and then have him even it up a little. Because my hair is curly, I sometimes miss little squiggles in the evening up. I trim to get rid of dye damage. --Cheryl

I trim myself at home. I gave up having a stylist cut it years ago. I never could find one that knew what to do with thick coarse hair! Every one would get huffy after awile because it wouldn't behave the way they wanted it to, wouldn't hold a blunt cut and... well... just wouldn't. I got tired of being charged 'extra long' prices at shoulder length too.

I also got sick of being told how unusual my hair was. After being on this board for awhile I KNOW my hair isn't that unusual. It's not just one stylist either. Here, South Dakota, Texas, California.

I don't have everyone elses hair. I don't want everyone elses texture and I have a lot of hair. It does what it feels like, it's healthy and it's NOT STRAIGHT, so quit trying to cut it that way! There. Had to vent.

I trim my own hair using Feye's method! For those of you a bit scared of trying it. that's natural. I was scared at first too! The best advice I can offer is when trimming your own hair, cut off a small amount at a time. I usually go through the process about 4 times (trimming a tiny bit each time) to make sure the ends are even and that there are no stragglers lurking. :)
Give it a try! Good Luck!

I always got to the salon because I wouldn't trust myself with a pair of scissors. I trimmer my own hair many years ago and ended up with bangs. I let a friend trim my hair and she cut it uneven. Therefore I go to my very trusted hairdresser who knows how much I value my hair.
Take care,
Angela

I've been trimming my own for the last six months or so. It's worked well for me, but I haven't decided exactly how I want my ends, if I want them totally blunt, or a U shape. Before I started trimming my own hair, my mom did it.

I was going exclusively to GM every 4 months or so....Then I decided I couldn't really afford it, so I stopped trimming for about 6 months except for S&D. Recently I decided to try the Feye method....worked great and I'll probably do that most of the time with maybe a yearly GM visit to make sure I'm not messing it all up too badly.

I've been trimming my own hair using your method since March and I love it. Its going pretty well. I'm doing the more straight across method and its still looking pretty decent. I thought after awhile it would lose its shape and start looking really uneven but its not, it looks pretty good. I just love having the control of doing it myself. I was really nervous the first time I did it, but I just take a little off anyway and its fine. The only real challenge I have is that one side of my hair always grows faster than the other and I usually have to take a little more off that side.

I've often had mom do it when I'm home, or I do it myself when I'm at school. From now on I'll probably just do it myself, though, since mom got carried away last time and made a very blunt cut in the front layer that I was trying to grow out. I'm also considering not trimming, but we'll see how I like the look.

I trim my own hair. I think the only person I would trust to do it for me is my boyfriend, or perhaps a GM stylist, but even then I would be nervous.

I just go to a regular salon. It is run by a sweet woman, and she is excellent at only taking off the bare minimum that I ask her to.

I now trim my own when it gets trimmed. I won't go back to a salon unless it is one sympathetic to long hair.

I go to a regular salon and am VERY specific with the hairstylist there: "Two inches off the very bottom - blunt cut and a quarter inch MAXIMUM off the layers - just enough to even them up." I repeat this scenario every eight months. I figure I lose half my new growth but I at least can finally see these horrible layers going away (gradually).

She's not happy but I give her a 25% tip (bribery!).

I just might have to fly down to Los Angeles and try out the GM salon.

I'm going to try trimming my own hair from here on out.

I have a perfectly nice stylist here in the town where my parents live, but I move around a lot and it's quite a challenge to find just a nice stylist. Not even a good stylist, not even a cheap stylist-- just a polite, respectful, friendly person!

Plus with more school possibly on the way I'm signing myself up for semi-poverty, so I'd better just suck it up and learn how to do it. I'm awfully tired of paying someone $40 for five minutes of work! (not to mention possible damage from roughing up my hair-- why are stylists so rough??)

I've had over three demoralizing salon experiences and I've always tipped no matter how rude the stylist was-- but I'm too old to do that now. No way!

(Can you tell I'm bitter? :) )

You are sounding like me. I think all of us have had at least one bad experience in a salon. Maybe it's because we go against the grain. Don't you know we're suppose to be like everybody else?

I have not trimmed or cut my hair in about a year. I don't plan to. i took my 4 yr old too get his hair cut and asked the lady to to fringe the side of my hair. She then was about to take the scissors to my hair. I told her to get the scissors away!!!! NO way was she gonna chop my hair.http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/images/icons/icon8.gif
Angry My son looked very handsome when she was done though:)

My mom has been the only one ever to touch my hair with a pair of scissors, besides me! I've thought of going to a hairdressser but usually I cut it myself(when I want a different style) or mom trims it. Why spend all that money just to get a trim? I've always thought when I cut my hair myself that if it's a disaster I'll go to a pro and get it fixed. But so far that hasn't been necessary, at least I haven't thought so myself, who knows what others have said about it!

Since I'm letting it grow back I don't think I'll have anyone but mom to trim it in the nearest future(2 years at least).

I trim myself thanks to Feye.

My last trim by another person (cosmetology student while I was in school) was in May 01
I grew without trims until March 04 and did my first Feye, slight U trim. I did another in September.

I'm going to be taking a good sized cut off soon. I want to cut my now approzimately 34-35 inch hair and cut back to 33. I will then grow and maintain at a length of no longer than 35 until the end of this year. That means everytime my hair gets past 35 inches this year it's getting trimmed again. 36 is waist on me and I'm not letting myself go longer until I am experienced enough and care well enough to deserve it.

I trim mine myself. Last time my husband offered to help (after I'd wandered between him and the PS2 twice muttering 'is it straight across the bottom?' - the man is a saint) which made things easier.

Could someone post me a link to Feye's method? I looked on the Articles board but couldn't find it. Thanks!

Mostly I trim it myself. From every lock I cut the same amount, never can go wrong you would say. Only my hair has a typical way of growing uneven in a few months, and in a deep V shape too. So whenever it gets really uneven I call in the help of my mom. She can make everything equal again and then it starts all over again

I didn't vote as I use several of the options. I get salon trims, I trim it myself, I've been to a long hair salon and hope to be able to do that once a year and I've had friends trim my hair.
