View Full Version : What's in your mister?
laurel March 9th, 2003, 03:58 PM Mister who? Heh. :D
Right now I'm just using a tiny touch of grapeseed oil and water. Was just curious what other folks use (if you use a mister). I read that someone uses rosewater and I have GOT to get to the health food store one of these days and get some, that sounds lovely.
Jonobie March 9th, 2003, 04:37 PM Currently, I've got two misters for haircare -- one with just water in it and one with Feye's oil+water+conditioner mix.
I have tons of other misters, too - for deoderants, air fresheners, etc. But not so important for this board, probably. :)
Cheers,
Jonobie
Teacherbear March 9th, 2003, 06:17 PM Right now, just plain ol' distilled water.
I've used oils mixed in and/or conditioner before. But just doing have any mixed right now.
Carolyn March 9th, 2003, 07:00 PM Right now its distilled water, a few drops of jojoba oil and a few drops of EO's. Bergamont and Orange something-or-other. Smells nice. I like to use it before a second day braid. It helps keep the escaping wispies at bay and it smells good all day.
bunniee March 9th, 2003, 08:28 PM Distilled water, lavender EO, and wee bit of glycerin. I have to mist my hair in the mornings or it looks like @ss. 8)
bunniee
Madeleine March 10th, 2003, 01:24 AM I've got filtered water with EOs in there (currently orange, last batch was lavender). I use it when I come home from a club or pub to get rid of the horrible smell in my hair. Can't sleep if I don't, ugh :p
Feye March 10th, 2003, 02:09 AM I use both a water-mister, to just wet down my hair, and a water+oil+conditioner-mixture to distribute oil.
My latest scent for the water+oil+conditioner mixture is Lush's Coolaulin coconut conditioner and a few drops of lavender oil. Heavenly smelling, possibly an aphrodisiac
Oils used are jojoba or sweet almond oil, and the ratio is 8:10 water, 1:10 conditioner, 1:10 oil + a few drops of essential oil.
Tresses March 10th, 2003, 04:39 AM I use distilled water with lavender EO to mist my hair on days that I don't wash (and even sometimes when I do). It gets rid of the static and makes my hair very soft and smooth. You got me thinking, though. Perhaps I'll add a few drops of jojoba to the next batch.
Good question! :D
Kao March 10th, 2003, 05:39 AM I've currently got rosewater, a little jojoba oil, and regular tap water (I'm bad.) in mine. I need to get another spray bottle to just put plain water into. I have no idea if the rosewater actually /does/ anything, but my s&c have no scent beyond aloe vera, and I /missed/ having pretty scented hair.
So now it smells ever so delicately of rose. ^_^
DweamGoiL March 10th, 2003, 07:24 AM ratios to avoid protein OD.
Heidi March 10th, 2003, 07:26 AM My hair mister has a rosewater-jojoba mix too. I just use it to mist my hair after my shower to make it easier to comb.
Anne March 11th, 2003, 11:16 AM Pure rosewater, no added water. It's the best and sends me into a dream every time I use it. I love to mist my hair just before bunning and when I take it down later....mmmmmm!
Rachel March 11th, 2003, 11:37 AM Newbie question - do you mist to keep the frizzies in check, make hair more manageable, condition, or just to smell nice?
Rachel
Arcticpixie March 11th, 2003, 12:49 PM Well one with straight tap water that serves double duty: Dampening and dicipline for the dogs and cats.
The other one is a little olive oil, a little Suave Coconut Co, a few drops of Vanilla Extract (mmmm vanilla) and bottled water. Shake well and spray on hair while standing in tub! If you don't you will slip and fall on the linoleum.Heeheehee.
Jonobie March 11th, 2003, 04:05 PM Newbie question - do you mist to keep the frizzies in check, make hair more manageable, condition, or just to smell nice?
Rachel
I either mist to detangle (with my oil and water mixture) or to rewet my hair on non-wash days so that I can style it more easily (the plain distilled water mix). Sometimes, too, I mist my hair with the oil and water mix as a preconditioning treatment.
Cheers,
Jonobie
Rachel March 11th, 2003, 04:19 PM Thanks, Jonobie! That helps me out a bit. ;)
Rachel
Anne March 11th, 2003, 05:57 PM I mist to tame flyaways, add moisture, to smell nice and to add shine and sofness. Rose water adds softness to my hair and I think it helps with shine too.
Axium March 28th, 2003, 05:55 AM I'm hot on the trail of experimentation with misters. I have about five going, with different oils and things. I'll hold out for a full report until I get more definitive comparisons.
I will say, tho, that misting is one of the very best things that's ever happened to my hair. It's so fine that it's easily overwhelmed, as someone once said here, and misting is a perfect balance. Plus it allows me to keep "doing stuff" to my hair without overwhelming it, when I should be leaving it alone!
Karen March 28th, 2003, 08:08 AM ....... $12, credit cards, lunch receipt for a Pepper and Egg Sandwich...... oh you asked "what's in your mister?" not "what's in your wallet?"...... i misunderstood :P
distilled water with lavender EO
Anne, forgive my ignorance, but could you explain more about the rosewater? where do you get it, what brand, etc.
Melusina March 28th, 2003, 08:57 AM LOL at Karen!
I have some distilled water, some jojoba, and some EO. Usually lavender, but sometimes I throw a little geranium in.
I would love to know about the rosewater, too.
Bethany March 28th, 2003, 10:23 AM Right now I had one of plain water and one of a sort of leave-in conditioner, which has distilled water, Suave Natuals Chamomile conditioner, and a little bit of silicone hair glosser in in.
Hmm, maybe I should add a little bit of conditioner to my plain-water one as well? Or some essential oils? (I have a little bottle of 5th-distilation neroli oil -- that is, the cheap version -- that would smell wonderful in my hair...)
Kitty Brite March 28th, 2003, 04:10 PM I have a bunch of floral flower waters I use.. i think the two I mostly use is the lavender floral water, and the rose water.
Nothing else is added. It's just to help maintain my moisture :) (and scent!) mmmm lavendar floral water!! :D
Sana March 31st, 2003, 10:26 AM Rose Water ......I just luv the fragrance :D
Koala Kim April 1st, 2003, 06:08 PM Hey Bunniee,
I have a mister with glycerin in it, too! Actually, it's a distilled water/glycerin/honey/lavender EO mix that I'm still tweaking. Makes my hair shiny and less frizzy.
I also have one with just distilled water and lavender EO.
Koalaboop
RedJen April 2nd, 2003, 05:09 AM Mine has water, a small amount of conditioner, some jojoba, some apricot kernel oil, and some glosser. I only use it when I know I'll keep my hair braided until the next time I wash. It seems to keep my hair soft and shiny.
eva April 6th, 2003, 03:38 AM I use it for my face as a tonic, but there is alcohol in it, isn't there ? So I wonder what it will do in the sun ? :?: But maybe the talk is about a different rose water ?Please, could anyone clarify ? Thanks :D
eva
laurel April 6th, 2003, 06:53 AM Eva, the rosewater I have seen is either rose oil and distilled water, or a rose infused water. I got mine at the health food store. I think I know the stuff you're talking about though, the stuff made with glycerin for a skin softener? I didn't realize it had alcohol in it.
Anne April 7th, 2003, 01:14 PM The rosewater I use is steam distilled.
You can read about how they do it here:
http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/whatishydrosol.php
Twitch April 9th, 2003, 07:55 AM i keep it full of water and a little bit of jojoba, mango and coconut oil. but i only use it before i put my hair in a bun or something, then i leave it for a day or two.
Anne April 9th, 2003, 06:39 PM i keep it full of water and a little bit of jojoba, mango and coconut oil. but i only use it before i put my hair in a bun or something, then i leave it for a day or two.
Mmmm! that sound yummy. How do you keep from eating your hair? ;)
Twitch April 9th, 2003, 07:48 PM heh, sometimes its hard, trust me! i havent yet found any decent oils in my town, so its just the John Frieda beach blonde Life Preserver Oil - i highly recommend it! (although a bit pricey.. i paid about ten bucks)
and my boyfriend *loves* the smell, so its worth it! :D
Chamomile betty April 10th, 2003, 07:13 AM Water, Mega Tek, Equess botanical spray, drop of Ion Glossing Mist, and that's it.
I find that making my own Mist/Detanger suits me better than buying a 'Detanger' from the store.
Great question :)
purplebubba September 9th, 2004, 12:58 PM White Rain Extra Body Conditioner and Water
Eowyn September 9th, 2004, 04:12 PM I've been using rosewater, Gardenia water and Lavender water. They smell wonderful! They're by "Heritage Products" and I get them at the health food store. They don't have any alcohol or anything else in them but water and oil. :cloud9:
KarenLynn September 10th, 2004, 03:40 AM Currently it's water, a couple of drops of conditioner (of the CO kind), and one drop patchouli EO. I love when I take my hair down at night and it's all warm and patchouli-smelling. :D Next time, I might add one drop of lavender too.
morguebabe February 3rd, 2006, 05:10 PM OK I was thinking of
some Pur filtered water
aloe gel
Glyereine
lavanader oil
and maybe some tea tree oil?
perhasps some conditoner in it also?
What do you think> what amounts?
Rose_Red February 3rd, 2006, 05:45 PM At the moment it's water with a drop of leave-in CO (no cones) and a few drops of rose oil. Yummy.
reddhot February 4th, 2006, 12:17 PM I actually have two misters right now... one with conditioner and water and the second with water that was boiled and then added lavendar essential oil to it.
Zopf February 4th, 2006, 03:11 PM On the occasion that I do mist, there must be jojoba oil and Infusium 23 :)
Wind February 4th, 2006, 03:21 PM I have aloe gel and distilled water in my mister. It works great for flyaways, and I spray it my my face in the summer, when I'm working outside.
Tap Dancer February 5th, 2006, 02:44 AM I use my mister for my weekly vinegar rinse. I pour purified water into the bottle and add some white vinegar. It's so much easier to spray it on my scalp than to try pouring it from the bottle.
Elle February 5th, 2006, 02:46 AM At the moment it's distilled water and a bit of Bumble and Bumble Leave In (rinse out).
kittcatt February 5th, 2006, 05:02 AM Okay, here's a question from someone who does'nt mist but is beginning to see some benefits. Do you mist when you get out of the shower as a leave in or is it just for pre updo? I'm thinking my hair would like aloe and jojoba oil.
Teresa February 5th, 2006, 12:37 PM aloe juice, aura glow oils
DMARTINEZ February 5th, 2006, 12:38 PM Okay, here's a question from someone who does'nt mist but is beginning to see some benefits. Do you mist when you get out of the shower as a leave in or is it just for pre updo? I'm thinking my hair would like aloe and jojoba oil.
Im a mistaholic! I mist after shower,during drying,before updos,etc etc. ;)
And in my mister is aloe and jojoba, one small drop each with distilled water. It works like a charm!
Deb :)
SunCat February 5th, 2006, 12:44 PM I just finished making a new mister. I mist all the time, it is refreshing and my hair loves it. My new one is a 2oz mister. I also mist my face with this.
Filtered water
20 drops of jojoba oil
4 drops lavender EO
2 drops lemongrass EO
Aloe vera gel a couple squirts
kittcatt February 5th, 2006, 01:14 PM Thanks Dmartinez. I think I'll try that.
missy60 July 6th, 2006, 06:38 PM Arcticpixie I used that same mix in my mister I seen it on here before and I made it by a recipe but I cant find any where how much of each do you use? My hair loves it so much, brings the curl out also. Vanilla extract never thought of that though does it have any effect on your hair or is it just for smell?
citymorningblue July 6th, 2006, 06:44 PM I mist with Kimberlily's leave-in defrizzing spray, starting just this past week. Before that, I used a mixture of water, conditioner, aloe, coconut oil, glycerine and lavender EO.
Juniper July 6th, 2006, 07:24 PM Strong chamomile tea. Subtly lightens my hair and adds a little yellow to it (yay! less ash!).
RaineLovesJ July 6th, 2006, 11:43 PM I currently have distilled water, a squirt of conditioner, and peppermint EO. Next time I think I'll add patchoili EO as I really love it, but the peppermint does give me an energy lift.
-Raine, still experimenting
Shermie Girl July 8th, 2006, 12:47 PM My current mist is:
Rosewater~ about three ounces
Rose essential oil in jojoba base~ about ten drops
A nice squirt of aloe gel
A dollop of glycerine
Filtered water to fill the bottle
This is very fragrant and refreshing. It freshens my nexy-day hair and helps control frizz and expanding.
SpecialKitty July 8th, 2006, 01:03 PM I Looooove :heartbeat Burt's Bees Carrot Seed Oil Spray. It is intended for the face, but I use it on my hair and, well, all over. It smells fantastic and has some of the best EO's in my opinion. It is a light oil mist, so works great for daily use. The ingredients are: purified water, rose oil, sandalwood oil, patchouli oil, balsam peru, carrot seed oil, and vetiver oil.
willowcandra July 8th, 2006, 11:37 PM boiled cooled water, tablespoon of aloe and a mix of three drops rosemary and three lavender. seems to be working well.
LisaMM July 9th, 2006, 06:54 AM Well my mister is pretty boring with just distilled water in it. But my hair loves distilled water! All these recipes sound wonderful....
Keenkitty July 9th, 2006, 08:05 AM Lisa I have to say your puppy is so cute!!!
I love animals!
I use rose water all over...but I did put some patchouli oil in my acv rinse and my hair smells SO GOOD!
Mu hubby said "you smell like 'chouli mama!" He never acts like a 4 year old unless something really pleases him.
Sakura07 July 9th, 2006, 12:13 PM In my mister there is only plain distilled water, boring i know but it works for me.
I have a question though, Ive seen several people say they use coconut oil in their misters, but isnt it solid at room tempurature? so do you warm the mister before applying or does it like dissolve in the water and stay a liquid?
leandrahime November 15th, 2006, 11:45 AM green & white tea with some homegrown organic chamomile
dearladydisdain November 15th, 2006, 12:26 PM Right now, just water. I just bought some grapeseed oil so I might try that in there soon.
cactuscurls November 15th, 2006, 08:30 PM Distilled water, lavender EO, aloe gel, Morrocco Method oil, honey
The honey makes my hair a bit crispy, so I'll leave it out next time. :)
Emichiee November 17th, 2006, 12:52 AM Stupid question:
Whats 'mistering' good for?
I can imagine with oil ..but just water? What would that do?
justgreen November 17th, 2006, 03:15 AM Misting, or I call it 'spritzing' , is one of the most excellent ways to give your hair moisture every day, without it looking like it's been sprayed down with oil or conditioner.
It works better if you use distilled water, which also has a softening effect. A normal ratio for a batch is:
4 ounces of distilled water in a small spray bottle
4-5 drops of jojoba (my preference)
a few drops of your favorite EO
a small squirt of your favorite cone free conditioner
Shake well before each use.
My Spritzer of choice at the moment is HALO.8)
Emichiee November 17th, 2006, 03:19 AM Thank you that sounds nice. I will try it. =)
Medievalhair November 17th, 2006, 07:23 PM I just made to to different hair recipes: one mister has a little bit of leave-in conditioner with cedarwood and pennyroyal oil with water.
the other mister has three EO's pennyroyal, cedarwood and peppermint oil with water.
The Flame March 13th, 2007, 11:13 AM My mister has filtered water, aloe and jojoba. After reading all of this thread, I'm off to buy a second mister and some rose water! It sounds lovely.
thetokenlady March 13th, 2007, 12:16 PM I feel deprived, like I should be doing something fancier for my hair.
My mister just has plain ol' tap water in it. I use it to dampen the ends of my hair at night, because I put coconut oil in it before bed and coconut oil works best for me with damp hair.
_eva_ March 22nd, 2007, 09:01 AM right now I have destilled water + jojoba oil + a few drops of lavender + a little bit of shea butter
lulabelle March 22nd, 2007, 12:57 PM My mister just has distilled water, jojoba, and aloe. I really need to get a better spray bottle though, the one I have now is more like a jet than a mist.
Azmaria March 22nd, 2007, 01:41 PM Mine is a cheap mix of a detangler and leave-in conditioner mister. About a tablespoon of whatever conditioner I'm using at the moment, water and a bit of fragrance oil.
maighdean March 23rd, 2007, 01:12 AM I use rosewater and a dab of lavender oil.
Billie March 23rd, 2007, 02:40 AM Sennatea, lavender EO and rosemary EO.
Lilibet March 23rd, 2007, 03:26 AM |For my hair I use water, rosewater and I recently added rosemary eo which has now completely masked the rosewater. I think my hair would actually prefer something richer so I'm debating adding some jojoba oil to the mix (if I can actually find some!)
For freshening the house I use water, peppermint and bergamot eo and for giving the bath a once over after each use and also the basin etc, I used water and teatree eo.
estanya March 27th, 2007, 05:51 PM Distilled water, olive and grapeseed oil (just enough to make a film), sodium PCA, and tangerine oil for scent.
Rowtree March 31st, 2007, 10:39 AM I've got one spray bottle with straight vinegar in it, which I use in the shower, instead of trying to pour diluted vinegar down my hair, and one with water and the tail (no pun intended) end of my mane'n'tail conditioner.
Blu11 April 22nd, 2007, 10:42 AM I've got one spray bottle with straight vinegar in it, which I use in the shower, instead of trying to pour diluted vinegar down my hair...
That sounds like a great idea!
I feel I waste a lot of ACV with regular rinses. Thanks, Rowtree!
