Hi everybody!! :waving:

I have been lurking on the forum for a while (well, for more than a month) and I'm just amazed by the knowledge of the people on this forum! I have never read so many great tips on haircare before. I think now it's time for me to finally properly introduce myself.

About my hair
History:I started to grow my hair long when i was about 8, had my hair cut short at 14, started to grow them long again but unfortunatelly i didn't take good care of it and it started to split (it also felt like straw). What I did to solve the problem is something I'd rather forget. I began cutting them myself-with just any pair of scissors I found in the house. (Is there something like a compulsive hair cutting disorder-if there is, I had it). I continued with this for two years and then finally took my lazy ass to the hair dresser's and had my hair cut. At first just a little but it didn't make a diffrence because my hair was so damaged. So had it cut short a few times (I should have them shaved off) and now finally my hair feels and looks like hair again!
Current state of my hair: It's cut in layers and the longest layers are now shoulder length. I still have a few split ends but nowhere near as many as I used to. I have also finally bought myself a pair of scissors just for cutting my hair. My hair is oily and I usually wash them every day. I have been experimenting lately with Lush, L'Occitane and Nivea shampoos/conditioners but I haven't found best products yet. My hair is straight (with s slight body wave), somewhere between fine and medium, and normal (uh, at least i think; it's not easy easy to determine this i find it) according to Fia's hairtyping system.

1. goal: to have shiny, healthy hair(almost there) :D
2. goal: to grow out layers (but i'm keeping my bangs)
3. goal: past shoulder length and we'll see it from there!

And a little about myself: I'm 21 old and a university student; I study English(something i'd rather not admit cause i know my english is anyhting but perfect) and Comparative Literature.

BTW, what is a cowlick?

Greetings Melis,
Hope you enjoy being on the boards....
Hmm, lets see...how can I explain a cowlick...
It's a section of hair that acts funny, sometimes
goes in a circle dispite being brushed differently...
And it always reverts back to that pattern. I have
one on the left side of my forehead....
(I probably didn't do justice explaining that!)
Anyhow, enjoy your stay!

Welcome! To me, a cowlick is a chunk of hair that wants
to stick out no matter what. When my wavy hair is short
and layered I basically have them all over my head!
Growing it long helps. :)

I think it's supposed to mean a cow licked you on the head
so now your hair is sticking up. :D

:silly: <-- that hair is full of cowlicks. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com) a cowlick is: a lock or tuft of hair growing in a different direction from the rest of the hair.

Anyway, welcome Melisanda! I'm a newbie too!

"Mélisande, looking from her tower window, sings as she combs her hair. Pelléas approaches, and as she leans forward, her tresses fall over him. Pressing them to his face, he kisses them."

It is an interesting story, but the ending is too sad. Well, that is a lesson not to venture into the dark forest of Allemonde.

Welcome Melisanda.... :D

Welcome Melisande.... :D

:D That's the reason why I have chosen Melisanda as my forum name! (It's Melisanda in the Slovene translation)!

And thank you for the explanation of a cowlick. Now I know what it means (I have it too ;) ).

Welcome to LHC, Melisande!

If I hadn't seen you were from Slovenia and that English is not your first language, I never would have known!!!! WOW! You have a very good command of English and sentence structure!!! :)

May I ask, what is your first language? What other languages have you studied and/or speak?

As far as a cowlick, it is a place on your scalp where the hair grows in a different direction then the other hairs in that area.

Hope that helps! :)

Welcome!

:D Thank you for the compliment!
Slovene is my first language (it's a Slavic language btw). I have been studying English for ten years, the last two years (and a half) at University. It's difficult, especially grammar. I have been also studying German in high school but my knowledge of German is very limited (I understand a little but can't speak it).

Btw, I'm melisanda actually, not melisande ;)

Hi Melisanda! Welcome to this site! :waving:

You're from Slovenia? That seems to be a very nice country. I passed through it two years ago when I had my holidays in Croatia. It's a very tidy country, and there are not houses everywhere you look (as in Austria), and there seems to be just forest and forest...
