View Full Version : Ball Beauty Group Order (Denman-n-more) and Tenderheaded?
LisaJaney January 24th, 2004, 05:22 PM OK, time to do the Denman/BallBeauty Group order. Ball Beauty has a TON of stuff:
OPI nail polish
Ornate Ficcare-looking (bejewelled) pelican beak clips
Denmans
MP brushes and combs
Avigal henna (the original, they say.)
too much to list, really.
Anyhow, go to
www.ballbeauty.com
and check it out; let me know what you want, and we'll split the freight equally and then just whatever shipping is from my house to yours (I use boxes and such that I have here, so we don't have to BUY mailing envelopes; I am cheap and want to save money for ALL of us)
ALSO: we are adding Tenderheaded to the order; I have to get ahold of them to see if we can qualify for a discount, to save us even MORE money!
I am shooting for Monday or Tuesday (Feb 2 or 3) for ordering......
Thanks!
LisaJaney

Dulci January 24th, 2004, 07:27 PM Yay! I'm in. :P
I want a Denman, I love the D3 Leopard I got for my daughter, I wonder, should I get another D3 or the D5? ooo, I love the look of the D3 Nickel...
I also want to try a Denman 3-row comb, how about 1 Yellow, 1 Black.
There's some other stuff I want to try too, Kneipp bath oil, oh! and they have Badedas! stuff like that, should we PM you LisaJaney? Or post here?
nastasska January 24th, 2004, 09:15 PM Me too :D put me down for 1 Mason Pearson Rake comb
1 Susan Faris Carry All Rectangle Zebra Bengaline and
1 OPI Pawlish Mutts New :D
Pixna January 25th, 2004, 07:15 AM Well, you just KNOW what I'm getting, of course -- another Denman D5 woody!!! :D LJ, do you know if Denman has any purse-size brushes???
LisaJaney January 25th, 2004, 09:17 AM Anyone may post the "wishlist" here or PM me with it. I will edit-in the info on my "thread-opener" post (I really LOVE that self-edit ability!) so you can check to make sure I have everything. I will probably not list EVERY SINGLE thing you want specifically, but maybe something like 'Pixna wants 3 Denman brushes" rather than 'Pix wants the D5 woody, the D143 and the D3Leopard" or whatever.
Yippee~ Now that I am getting going on this, I am excited to be doing another group order! Now it's time for ME to shop! I really don't NEED anything, though......yeah, like when has THAT stopped me????
OK, up to edit-in the list so-far......
Dulci January 25th, 2004, 10:42 AM Pixna! I remember you raving about the D5, do you have both the D3 and the D5? Can you compare them? I see that the D3 has 7 rows of pins and the D5 9 rows, and the D5 has a heavier handle. And when you say "Woody" does that mean actual wood or wood colored? I don't see a drop-down box to choose different colors...
I see that they have a purse sized Denman too, the D14 under the Traditional Styling collection, "5 Widely Spaced Rows, Purse size".
Pixna January 25th, 2004, 11:02 AM Hi, Dulci! I've got the regular D5 and the Woody, which is like the D5 but it is a bit narrower, the cushion is tan, not red, and the bristles are brown. It's lovely! I belive it is real wood, but it is ultra smooth. I don't have the D3, so I can't compare them. Unfortunately, I can't find the Woody on their site, but LJ found it for me before, so I'm sure it's there (I just don't know where to look, and even a search did not call it up). I saw the little purse size one -- so cute. I was hoping they might have a Woody purse size, but that might be asking too much! :D
If you like the D3, I have a feeling you'll LOVE the Woody as much as I do.
Niphredil January 25th, 2004, 11:31 AM Hi... I've got two questions...
has anyone from europe experience in participating in a group order, or has anyone experiecne with dealing with someone from europe in a group order ??
I do not own a credit card (do not want one either) and I have no idea how to get the money issue right between europe and america.
And for my 2nd question....
about the denmans.... how smooth are the pins on the brushes (like the D4) ??? We have brushes like these overhere, but the pins are melted and thus have those ridges on them.... I'm interested in these brushes.. but then they have to be truly better than the ones we have here.
Thnx
Niphredil
Dulci January 25th, 2004, 12:56 PM Thank you Pixna. I see now, I was confused, I thought the D5 and the Woody were the same. :silly:
I bought my daughter the D3 Leopard last year for Christmas, and I love using it on her wet hair! After I've detangled with the Ace comb, the Denman smooths everything out nicely without pulling. I've borrowed it a time or two to use on my wet hair, so now I need to get one for myself. I don't guess a wooden brush is best for use on wet hair, so I guess I will have to go with a D3.
So, here we go LisaJaney:
[list]1 each Denman D3M Chrome @ $9.95 (this will go with my silvery vanity accessories)
1 each Denman 3-row comb Yellow @ $2.95
1 each Denman 3-row comb Black @ $2.95 (1 for me, one for DD, so if they don't have those colors ok, but it is best to get them different...)[/list:u]
Niphredil - I can't help you with the first question, but the pins on these seem very smooth, and they don't have those awful little balls on the tips. :x
LisaJaney January 25th, 2004, 02:41 PM I have sent things (group order things and sewn items) to ladies in England, the Netherlands, Israel even, New Zealand, Australia, and France. The women who have done this always had a PayPal account. You do not (I don't THINK) have to have a CC hooked to the paypal account, because they can link directly to your bank-account if you wish. Me, I'm a chicken, so I hook my PayPal account to a totally separate account at a bank I do NOT use for our family finances, JUST IN CASE. I have never had a single problem with my money in PayPal, though, so I am sure my paranoia is unfounded and unnecessary. That's one option.....if that helps.
As far as the 'smoothness' of a Denman, the bristles do NOT have the balls on the end, if you're getting the Denman Traditional line that these gals are talking about. I love my Denmans. I have....I think it's 6 of them, and will get more I am sure. And I LOVE their little 3-row combs!
I have a D4 (no D5) and it's my very favorite of my Denmans, except the D3 that was my FIRST Denman and a GIFT from TBear. Of course that one wins because of the special place in my heart it holds. But that D4 is kickin'.
Pix, last time we ordered, one of the ladies asked me to see if they have a D14 in wood, so I called and asked, and they DID! I can't remmber what the price was, but I remember haggling a bit to get a good price for it....and it was a cute little brush. I worried that if *I* had one like that in MY purse, it'd get beat to a pulp. In MY purse, I use just a Denman 3-row, and it's kinda a cross between a comb and a brush. But I'll check on the prices and availability of all these things. I don't remember ever seeing the woodies on the site at all, but I asked and voila! they had 'em!
I'll get to checking on them! Hugs,
LJ
Madeleine January 25th, 2004, 03:07 PM Regarding Europeans and paypal - we can assign a bank account to withdraw money into from the paypal account, we cannot add funds to paypal from a non-US bank account. I'm not sure if we can even start a paypal account without a CC, since they use a test CC transaction to verify that you are who you claim to be.
I don't know any way to transfer money between the US and Europe that wouldn't defeat the money saving concept of a group order due to the fees.
Niph, I know we can get the Denman brand brushes here (I saw them at a salon supply shop). A friend of mine bought one and later mentioned she doesn't use it at all for some reason, if you like I can ask her if she still has it and wants to get rid of it. PM me if you're interested. I was with her when she got the brush and checked the bristles out of curiosity, and I couldn't find seams.
Teacherbear January 25th, 2004, 05:23 PM Just chiming in here on how great the Denman brushes (and combs) are. Denman was the original manufacturer of this type of brush. All others are knock offs. I've bought several knock offs over the years, but nothing matches Denman quality. NOTHING!
LisaJaney January 25th, 2004, 06:53 PM Regarding Europeans and paypal - we can assign a bank account to withdraw money into from the paypal account, we cannot add funds to paypal from a non-US bank account. I'm not sure if we can even start a paypal account without a CC, since they use a test CC transaction to verify that you are who you claim to be.
I did not know that, Madeleine. Thank you for teaching me that part. Niphr, if Madeleine or you can get them there locally (it's an English-made brush, for Pete's sake, a person would THINK you could get them pretty reasonably in Europe!) that's probably the cheapest IF you don't have a PayPal account in place.
Sorry for the confusion. I learn something new every day!
Niphredil January 25th, 2004, 11:34 PM Hi,
So the group order wouldn't be the best thing for me to do. I haven't found a denman around here yet (but I haven't been to a salon supply shop and I have no idea where to find one either)
Madeleine, I'll look if I can find it here. Do you know what type of Denman your friend has ? If I can't find one here, I might pm you about it.
Thank you for your replies !!
Niphredil
Madeleine January 26th, 2004, 01:13 AM Do you know what type of Denman your friend has ? If I can't find one here, I might pm you about it.
From looking at the Ballbeauty site I think it was a D3 with a black handle. I remeber it was the basic "all types of hair" model and the size on the picture looks right.
Pixna January 26th, 2004, 04:00 AM Pix, last time we ordered, one of the ladies asked me to see if they have a D14 in wood, so I called and asked, and they DID! I can't remmber what the price was, but I remember haggling a bit to get a good price for it....and it was a cute little brush. Ooooo, that would be wonderful if they had the D14 in the wood. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for checking on it, LJ!! If they've got it, put me down for a Woody Sr. (the D5 woody) and a Woody Jr. (the D14 woody). THANK YOU!!!
LisaJaney January 26th, 2004, 07:52 AM OK, Pix, here's a pic of my D3 (the one TB gave) and a D143 I think it is. I THINK that the D14 is a purse-size, and the 143 is the same basic brush, just a LONGER handle:
http://www.tlc-pads.com/Denmans.JPG
I put a measuring tape in there so you can see the length......
I will call today about the woodies, and I HAVE to look at the site as well. Gee whiz, today is a bearcat; lots to do (buried in sewing, then working at the shop the next three days....) Anyhow, I wanted you to see the brushes.... The D14 is a cute little brush, though. I love my 143 for detangling after washing. (and they're pretty cheap, too!)
Pixna January 26th, 2004, 08:26 AM Thanks, LJ!! The little will be a nice cutie for me. I hope it comes in wood!
Good luck with getting everything done today! May the force be with you! :D
scarlett January 26th, 2004, 10:06 AM Wait wait, I'm ordering too . .
shopping, I know I want a Denman
Do I want the one for "fine short" or "average medium"? I have shoulder blade length fine hair?
Lemmmee see . . .
'K
Here's my order:
1 D14
1 D3, Candy Stripe (I can't resist--so cute)
I'm still deciding on the comb. I have a rake by conair and I can sand, but their rake looks really nice. The three-row comb does look cheaper--and really intriguing. Nope, no comb. Not right now. Just the two brushes. Sigh. I had a denman years ago. I didn't know it was a denman, though and after I lost it, thought I had found a "replacement". It was by goody and it fell apart. Now I remeber the packaging and it looked just like that. Yeah!
Dvips January 26th, 2004, 12:08 PM I'd like:
1 MP child's brush (white handle if available - don't really care)
1 "Deep Ruby, Marcasite and Crystal Combination Rhinestone Clip"
1 Avigal Henna - 9 oz - Brown (my first henna... since my hair is already brown, surely I can't mess this up :? )
or will it be a pain for you to ship the henna? Don't know how it's packaged.... if so, I'll certainly live quite happily without it!
Thanks LisaJaney! :D
LisaJaney January 26th, 2004, 01:00 PM UPDATE:
They have the woodies in the D14 (small) size for $11.95 (they have two; one goes to Pixna, but we don't HAVE to order the other) and that's the haggled-down price. Michael was really nice to let me have that lower price again. They also still have the D5 woodie, too, and its price is $17.50, which is a steal. (DenmanUS lists it at $25-ish I think)
Cool! I'm in a rush right now, but will amend the list tonight or tomorrow.
Hugs!
LJ (and Michael remembered me right away, and even remembered my last name. I said "This is Lisa XXXXXX, the crazy lady that does the group-orders..." and he said, "Yes, the lady who orders the Denmans for her friends!" Crap, they probably have a coffeemug there with my name on it......)
Pixna January 27th, 2004, 04:28 AM YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Crazy-Lady-Who-Does-Group-Orders-For-Her-Friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Karen January 27th, 2004, 06:20 AM OK, i have no will power.
does anyone know what the difference in the size of the head is between the D3 and D4?
Louise January 27th, 2004, 09:17 AM Hello! I am going to get in on my first group order!
I NEED  a nice comb.
Any opinions on the MP Rake vs. the MP detangling comb? It seems like the teeth on the detangling comb are pretty close together?
Louise
Karen January 27th, 2004, 09:42 AM Louise, I have them both and i like the rake better.
although i don't like either of them all that much.
i vastly prefer my Creative combs from tenderheaded.com
Speedqueen January 27th, 2004, 11:13 AM Ok. I'm in if you are willing to send/mail to Canada and do the money order thing again. let me know if you don't want to .....
Denman D83 Large Paddle Brush @ $8.95 ea
Thats it.
Thanks You are a STAR.........
Heather
Louise January 27th, 2004, 11:47 AM Louise, I have them both and i like the rake better.

Thanks, Karen.
I think I'll just order from tenderheaded.
Louise
LisaJaney January 27th, 2004, 02:50 PM OK, few answers: (but first a question: who waxes their eyebrows and is it easy? I am so flippin' sick of plucking.....and am eyeing some of the wax kits they have there......I will ask this on the friends board, too.) Now, on to the answers.....
Varbalow: henna is easy to ship; it of couse adds weight (postage costs) to your individual shipping (from my house to yours; it makes no difference in the company shipping costs - they do that by dollar-amount) So, go ahead and order that henna! I have two bags of red and may just get me some more while I'm ordering.
Karen, let me get my brushes and measure.......OK, I'm gonna make you PUKE with all this info "Everything you never wanted to know about Denmans". My D3 is the basic black with red rubber and white pins. My D4 is a translucent blue with blue handle and pins, and white rubber. The dimensions are as follows (and I plan to WEIGH them, too!)
Overall length:
8" even for the D3, and 8 5/8" for the D4
Head/Handle Length:
4+4" for the D3, and 4 1/4" head on the D4, the handle is 4 3/8" on the handle.
Head Width:
both 1 1/2" wide
Pins all seem to be the exact same length. You of course know that the D3 has 7 rows, and the D4 has 9.
Weight:
the D3 is 87 grams (3.1 oz) and the D4 is 109 g (3.8 oz) The way *I* understood it is that the D4 is basically a D5 but a teeny bit lighter, but I could be wrong (stuff happens, ya know!) I ADORE that D4...
Oh, I ordered a Creative....well, whatever the number is that is the COPY of the MP Rake. I thought the teeth were way too pointy. I have now what I THINK is an MP rake, and it's magnificent. The teeth are really blunt..... I suppose it's all in what you want. The OTHER Creative combs all were beautiful, and so was this "fake rake" I got, but the teeth were just a bit too sharp for me; maybe it was just MY comb?
Last item of business: does anybody want to throw a Tenderheaded Group Order in on this???? Last time, they gave us 10% off (cannot guarantee they'd do it again, but I can try) if our order was over a hundred bucks (I think that is right..)
Jonobie January 27th, 2004, 03:25 PM Last item of business: does anybody want to throw a Tenderheaded Group Order in on this???? Last time, they gave us 10% off (cannot guarantee they'd do it again, but I can try) if our order was over a hundred bucks (I think that is right..)
Eeep! I was dutifully ignoring this thread. Goin' about my buisness. Wasn't going to spend money. Nope. All finished with purchasing combs and brushes.
Um, until I noticed that Tenderheaded has large Ficcare clips. So, yeah, I'd definitely be in for one of those. That's $28, so we're a bit over 1/4 of the way to $100.... :)
Cheers,
Jonobie
curlsntexas January 28th, 2004, 12:40 PM Would love to help!!!!
What comb should I order. Karen wrote she liked the creative combs from Tenderhead better than the MP ones......
Who likes which comb best?
TIA
Karen January 28th, 2004, 01:30 PM I know a lot of people have the MP combs and do like them very much. They aren't a bad comb, it's just that they are fairly expensive.
if I like a different brand better and it's a cheaper, it's a win-win. I do have to admit that there is one Creative Comb I did get and didn't find it to be as smooth as the others.
Here are the combs I have and my reviews:
I bought the following at different times from tenderheaded.com
(http://www.tenderheaded.com/combs.html)
Across their page, these are the combs I have:
1. Creative C9W Wide-Tooth Seamless Comb (CR-C9W$8.90)
Wide-toothed handled comb.
This is the one I didn't like as much because it wasn't quite smooth enough up where the teeth meet the comb. it was almost like they cut out the extra teeth. Is this the one you bought, LisaJaney? I don't recommend.
2. Creative C8L Seamless Comb (CR-8L$9.90)
Wide-toothed handle-less comb.
This one is my second favorite. The teeth are just perfect, nice and not too sharp. The only drawback to this one is that I find it hard to grip because it doesn't have a proper handle.
**3. Creative 3L seamless comb CR-3W$9.90
Medium-wide toothed handled comb
This is my very favorite. If I lose this in my house, I ransack it trying to find it. It is just the perfect comb -- the teeth are just right and feels great in my hand. love it love it love it.
4. Creative 5 Seamless Comb CR-5$7.90
Just a great little pocket comb. Love it. Fits in my purse pocket perfectly.
5. Creative 50 R Seamless Comb CR-C50R$6.00
This is a rat-tail comb. I use it mainly for the rat tail and my halo. This comb is completely unsuitable for my hair type, but I bought it for roller setting and curler setting my hair. Great comb for polishing, not detangling.
I also have the two MP combs sold on Ball Beauty. I bought them from Ball Beauty quite some time ago.
They arrived very scratched and looked like they had been used.
When I called the company about it, they offered to exchange the combs but would not reimburse me for the shipping costs. That left a bad taste in my mouth, which may be part of the reason why I don't like these combs as much.
They both work fine. They don't have the same feel in my hands and I really don't use them. In fact, I am not even sure where they are in my house and don't care. They're probably under my bed or under the couch somewhere.
So there's my opinion, FWIW.
Lisa, I'd be interested in a tenderheaded order if we could get the discount again. I think I need some more combs! :D
LisaJaney January 28th, 2004, 03:09 PM I think it was the 8L. A recangular comb with chunky teeth. It really LOOKS like the MP rake. The one *I* got just had pointy teeth; too pointy for my liking. But Smiles loved it, so.......off it went! I am generally a "handled-comb lover", but do have a lovely MP rake that I adore from Fortnum and Mason in England (gift from a lovely lady I know) and I LOVE that comb. It's the BEST for detangling wet hair. I have fallen madly and completely in LOVE with that comb.
I will change the title of my mane-board post, too, and see if we have enough interest in Tenderheaded as well. For those of you who haven't done the group order thang with us before, here's what I do:
I gather the "wish list" and then make the order and charge it. I divvy up the company shippping evenly between all participants for each company. Meaning: if you only order from Ball, you ONLY have to pay part of the BALL shipping, not the Tenderheaded shipping.
When the items arrive, I divide them up and add up your items plus your fraction of the company shipping, then whatever REAL postage is from my house to yours (combs-only are WAY cheap to ship). It'd look like this:
Sarah:
1 8L comb $9.90
1 Aquis Towel $16.95
Fraction of the Tenderheaded shipping $0.80
Shipping from my house to yours $1.98
Then we can do checks/money orders or PayPal and I ship the stuff the minute your payment arrives. Pretty simple~
Thanks, ladies! I think I'll order on Monday the 2nd......wahoo!~
Heidi January 28th, 2004, 04:32 PM Oh man...I just KNEW I shouldn't have wandered in here. But you all were making such a racket, I had to come see what was going on! ;)
Must leave now...must go! Leaving...not going to buy anything. Nope.
scarlett January 28th, 2004, 05:00 PM Uh, ho. More hair stuff.
Here we go.
Tenderheaded orders
Denman 81M (unless it has balls on the end of the nylon bristles--someone please tell me if it does!!!!!!!!'cuz I don't want it if it has balls . . .)
I changed my mind, please cancel the tenderheaded comb orders of the creative combs. I want the MP combs instead.Creative 5 seamless comb
Creative 3W seamless comb
Instead:
MP 8" tail comb
MP 6" Rake
I still want the Denman mixed bristle brush. But will sombody please tell me if it has balls?(hides eyes from total)
I feel guilty, but I have really cr@ppy combs and brushes and they are breaking my hair. The only one I have that isn't harmful is a BBB by scuncii. For some dumb reason my Sally Beauty supply doesn't sell Denman anymore.
Dvips January 28th, 2004, 06:17 PM Oooooo! I need to get in on the TenderHeaded order too, but I must go to bed NOW  Surely I can find the time to spend more money by Feb 1st, right? :D
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Heidi January 28th, 2004, 06:21 PM Okay, this just cracks me up every time I see it:

If you are hedging about those 3 row combs, buy one. They are cheap and so great. I use mine all the time and it fits so well in my purse without puncturing the purse lining or something else.
Ok, here's what I want from Ball:

Hey LisaJaney -- My order should actually just read:
Jonobie:
Ficcare Hair Clip - Large FHC-101 Color Pearl
Thanks! You're the best. Btw, what's your secret for negotiating discounts? I'm *lousy* at haggling, and was curious how you opened the subject of having a huge honkin' order and wanting a discount. :)
Cheers,
Jonobie
LisaJaney February 1st, 2004, 04:29 PM OK, caught up to here.
Jonobie, Karen is actually the one who got Tenderheaded to give us a discount originally, and told me about it. But I've negotiated discounts with companies, too. You just tell them that you are considering making a large order and would like to know if they have any point-breaks in their pricing. Do they ever give discounts for larger orders, and how large do those orders have to be in order to receive a discount, and what percentage is discounted? I am just honest with them. Heck, you can do that at KMART, for pete's sake. I went in there to buy bowls for the restaurant (Rubbermaid used to make these melamine HEAVY bowls and plates and cups. We wanted the BLACK bowls for soupbowls, because they matched the black salad crocks we use) and asked to speak to the manager (the floor clerks generally don't have the power to negotiate a bargain for you; shoot for the top). Then I asked him, "Look, I'd like to buy 4 dozen of these bowls. How many are in a case, and what kind of deal can you offer me if I buy a case?" I can do simple math in my head to help figure out if it's a good discount or not, and he did alright for me. He didn't quite have 48 bowls, but I still GOT the discount on the 3 dozen he DID have, and we did alright that way. I also threw in a free pizza for him, so that helped...... :) You can do this anywhere. Target, even. What's the worst they can say? "No." Then you decide if you want the item for the price they have, or leave. No harm, no foul.
And we DO get the discount on the Tenderheaded accessories. 10% if we order more than $100. I doubt we'll have any trouble making that amount up here. Jonobie's spending $26, and there's another $14 with Priss' pillowcase and $17 more with Mad's Aquis towel. That's almost $60, and I'm not EVEN counting the combs that are ordered. A cursory glance hints that there's another $50 or $60 in addition to that. And that's without MY order, if I do order anything. I am such a moron. I asked her "Can we get the discount, does the Ball brush that Scarlett want have balls?" (it doesn't) and "I can't find the hair accessories without searching specifically". I am a Mutant. It's only a BUTTON at the top, Lis, coulnd't BE easier. And I realized that RIGHT AFTER I sent the message. D'oh!
So, we DO get the 10% discount, Scarlett's brush is ball-less, and Lisa is a genius! I think that's all we needed to know!

Already knew Lisa was a genius, but all this about Scarlett desiring ball-less brushes is new and interesting! :misskim:
