View Full Version : speaking of shea butter.....

Last year I bought a pound of shea butter. I was intending on using it on my hair as well as skin but it seemed as though it left my hair in clumpy sticks. I didn't mind not using it for my hair though, because I was loving the shea butter as a moisturizer for legs, arms, hands, face, and lips. And mixing the essential oils and fragrance oils was fun too.

But everyone's been talking about using it in their hair lately and it gave me the incentive to try it in my hair again. This time I rubbed a bit in my hands like I would to moisturize the hands. Then I ran my hands through the ends of my damp hair. It worked great! No hair in clumpy sticks! The hair drank it up and felt fine. I don't know if it is any better after just one try, but now that I've figured out how my hair likes it I'll keep doing it after every shower.

Thanks ya'll.

YAY!!! Snippett!!!!!
That's exactly how I do it. I'm glad you figured out another way to make it work for your hair. I LOVE shea butter in my hair. It makes it really soft.

What does shea butter look like? I'm imagining pure cocoa butter, is it anything like that? What does it smell like?

Snip, where did you buy a POUND of it?

I've heard so many great things about it, I might just have to try some. ;)

Dear Product Junkie,
:D :D :D
Oh MissKim!!

I got some at a health food store. Quite expensive. It was JASON brand, 1.75 ounces for over $6!! But the smell is yummmmmmy!! Then, I just recently bought a pound for $6.50 from www.health2go.com
The kind I got is shea butter whipped with liquid shea to make it softer. So far I like it. But, it has NO smell!! I don't like that! Waaaaa! I could mix something in with it. I was thinking of spooning some out into a small container to mix it w/something smelly. Maybe lavendar EO. I don't want to mix it in with all of the shea in case I don't like the smell.

Good luck! Hey, I wanna picture of all your hair products!! I want to see just how much of a product junkie you are! :D

Go to http://www.natureswildchild.com/fixedoils.shtml. I get the African Natural. Ask for a sample of something else if you'd like to give it a try. The woman who runs this site is very accomodating.

From there, go to our recipe thread and mix up a batch of Fox's Shea Butter Moisturizing Cream. It's wonderful!

I always got the same results as you did, Snip. (And it seemed to turn my hair into a dust magnet!). I still have *plenty* of Shea butter left though, I'll try using it on damp hair. :D Thanks for the tip! :D

It really annoyed me that the kind I got has some small lumps that’s really hard to melt in your hands, but then I left in on the radiator until it all was melted. Now the consistency is a lot heavier, but NO ANNOYING LITTLE BITS in it! :D Yay! Now it all just melts easily when I rub it between my hands

(I forgot to include my HUGE bottle of Emu Oil, and don't forget my Shea Butter Leave-in I just ordered, thanks to Nastasska! It also doesn't include my 5 new hair toys and several other EO's. )

Yes, I use a similar method to spread shea butter on my hair. Rubbing the shea butter between my hands gives the shea butter a smoother texture.

I get my shea butter from Nature's Wild Child. Their shea butter has a nice light, clean, nutty scent. It doesn't linger in your hair to compete with your perfume. It also mixes well with essential oils.

HA! Looks my my bathroom/bedroom (yes, I have to store stuff in my bedroom since there is no more room in the bathroom!)

Only, I don't buy huge bottles of stuff (takes too long to use up- why buy 1 huge bottle of one thing when you can buy 2 smaller bottles of 2 different products to try? ;) )

MissKim: I think the others answered well enough. Shea butter (at least the kind I bought) is a white (or cream color) butter. It's very much like real butter, it is a solid, but melts easily. It has this gritty texture to it, but when melted it goes away. I think you have to use a lot of heat to keep it from re-globulizing (how's that for a word?) Saponification comes to mind. Mine doesn't have a scent to it, which is perfect for me.

I bought mine from fromnaturewithlove.com because I was also buying other things and I like them.

notjomamma: oh yes you HAVE to add EOs to it! I've got a few small 1-2oz jars that I use. I scoop out a bunch of shea butter, melt it, then add whatever EOs and scents I feel like. If I don't like it, then all's not lost. And with such a small amount, I'm mixing up a new batch all the time and can change recipies! My legs scream for it when I finish showering.

Igor: Melting it is the key isn't it? I melt a bit at a time, and have even used it in the liguid warm state for a great massage! mmmmmm

euphrasyne: I found a little container of Palmer's Shea Butter in our Walmart in the ethnic section and some in the travel size area. It smells a bit, but I figured it was worth the 75 cents. That was my first shea butter ever, and I still have some in my purse for my chapped lips.

I usually find really big containers, but then... I DO live in MS. We are 33% african american, so we have plenty of shea and other "ethnic" products at very reasonable rates.

I love the cost of living in MS. :D 8)

Did anyone see Sinbad's routine where he went off on trying to find jerrycurl in CO?

Bwahahahahaha :D

I got my unrefined shea butter at http://hillcountryhaiku.safeshopper.com. It was not too bad a price. I whipped mine with some fragrance oils and a bit of grapeseed oil and apricot oil. It turned out really nice . I love the way it makes my hair feel and it looks much shinier too. Hope this works for you>

Honey, I've seen worse!! Looks like you're just starting out! :D :D :D I might be wrong, but I'm thinking Avrilon has maybe 5 times what you've got. She's got stuff in her garage that her BF uses. It's her discards/don't likes. :D I'll pm her and see if she can take a pic for us!

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAATTT?
GEE that's the greatest dye I've ever seen;
FERIA only covers but it won't change your colour, right??
i use granier to dye mine light blond!

euphrasyne

Feria will change your color DRASTICALLY.

Tips:
Revlon fades ALOT
Clariol colors are not true to the box, but they don't fade as bad
Feria is not as damaging as hydrience.
