Just wondering ... is there a difference between a cinnamon bun and a chignon? Or is it the same thing in two different languages?

I always considered a chignon a low bun at the nape of the neck. A cinnamon bun would be any bun, including a chignon? And oh so lovely for breakfast! :)

This is what an online dictionary said about chignon:A roll or knot of hir worn at the back of the head or especially at the nape of the neck.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[French, from Old French chaignon, chain, collar, nape, from Vulgar Latin *catni, from Latin catna, chain

The heroines of many books I gave read were always putting their hair in a chignon, which I imagined to look something like a figure 8 bun. I guess it's not. I guess it's just an ordinary bun at the nape of neck.

I think a cinnamon bun is when you coil the hair as you twist it into the bun. You don't have to coil it to make a regular bun.

But, maybe one of the updo eperts on this board can enlighten us. :D

I just looked at Katzdecimal's site, and she said a chignon could be placed anywhere on the head. And, she coiled her chignons. So, now, I don't know if there is any difference between a cinnamon bun and a chignon or not.

I have always thought of the chignon as a bun at the nape. Cinnomon buns are yummy tho lol :D

I think bun, cinnamon bun, and chignon are all the same.

But a cinnamon bun has to have icing on it to be really sinful! :)

i think the difference is that a bun is actually when the hair is pulled into a ponytail first and then teased and fluffed to give it that puffy, round shape with the ends all tucked in. a chignon is what most normal people wear. at least that's what i've always heard.

my best friend in high school was a marching band field commander and her mother always put her hair into a bun before performances. it looked extremely damaging and icky to do.

Normal people? THAT explains why I always wear a "bun". LOL!

But if a chignon is a "roll" of hair or a "knot" then I always figured it was hair rolled up and tucked under- or an actual knot, Goldenhair shows these on her dressytresses.com site.

And a bun is hair that is twisted and spiraled up just like a cinnamon pecan swirl bun.... mmm..........

I actually DID try to find out the difference in these terms before and couldn't find much! They CANT be the same though. They just can't. :(
On my hair fork style demo paper that came with the fork, it says "Can be used in buns, chignons, or french twists." So they must be different..?

Here's the "official" American interpretation straight from the source (Webster's, of course! ;) ):

Chignon: a knot of hair that is worn at the back of the head, especially at the nape of the neck

Bun:
a. a sweet or plain small bread, esp. a round roll (yeah, but they forgot the cinnamon swirl with icing and pecans part!) :D

b. a knot of hair shaped like a bun :D

c. buttocks

So, I think we've narrowed it down. A chignon is a type of bun, but not all buns are chignons (and no chignons are edible nor are they buttocks). :DD

Okay Avi- you have been cracking me up lately- you've got to do something about these double posts of yours! Your really trying for that star, eh? ;)

<still trying to figure out what a chignon is but I think Pixna is on the right track> It's like a hen is a chicken, but a chicken isn't a hen. A puppy is a dog but a dog isn't a puppy. :|

When I do a chignon, I always put my hair in a poney tail at the nape of my neck, grab the ends and roll them slightly under to have about one inch against my head. I then fasten the ends to the back of my head from inside the roll. It sort of fans out, and is not coiled like a bun.

That's how I imagine a chignon, Cheryl. A ROLL! Exactly. I wonder if I could do one.

Cowgal,
I rarely have a problem with the back, but sometimes I have trouble when I roll or twist the sides before placing the hair in a ponytail to begin the chignon part. Just doing the back usually takes about 3 minutes or less. There are many different ways of doing the chignon, and I have a book Five Minute Hair which shows several variations. I really like this style because it is comfortable and easy. Warning: if you do it too low on your head, it will rub on your collar all day and drive you insane.

I have added a hand-drawn diagram to my webpage (this is really bad, people) of how I do my hair in this fashion. The final illustration does not do the finished style justice, but it gives a general idea. .

Pathetic chignon diagram is at the bottom of the page.

Yippiee!!!! I get to learn a new updo! I always passed off chignon as a french version of 'bun' Heeheehee. Shows how 'uncultured' I am. Geesh that makes me sound like cheap yoghurt.

So I guess a bun would be "A ponytail twisted around it's base, either one roll against the next or beneath the next" Whereas a Chignon would be "A low ponytail folded under itself to create a knot, with or without the ends wrapped around the base" and not near as tasty!

Pixna's pics and Euphrasyne's diagram help immensly! Euphrasyne your diagram is just great! It actually makes sense. Thank you both for your visual aids :D

Pixna you are too funny! and exactly right on. I do think "chignon" sounds much more elegant than "bun" but most of the time I am not being elegant enough for a chignon so "bun" it is :D

I agree that chignon sounds much more elegant than bun. Too bad it's not interchangeable with "buttocks," though. Wouldn't it sound lovely to say, "I've just been sitting on my chignon all day," or "Do you think this outfit makes my chignon look fat?" or "I need to go to the gym and work on my chignon." We could actually sound proud and delighted to admit, "My chignon seems to be getting wider," or "All my weight has gone to my chignon," or "I wish my chignon was larger and fluffier." But nooooo -- we can't say any of those lovely things. DARN! ;)

It seems like all I do is work on getting a larger chignon in one place and a smaller one in the other place! :D Life is not fair, it's so much easier to get a bigger chignon you-know-where!

LOLOLOL, Carolyn!!!! That's my precise problem, too!!!! It's amazing how large my chignon can get from just sitting at the computer for days on end -- hmmm....guess that was an unintentional pun!! ;)

Ok, I think my understanding is along Gabi's . . .

a bun is twisted (in the process of making it a neat little parcel of hair), a chignon is folded/bent to make that little parcel.

AND, I'd like a cinnamon bun, please! Anyone have milk or coffee????

Also, Gabi, my hubby says that dogs are BUNNIES, horses are too . . . and they all say "MOOOOOOO"! ;) hahahahahahaahaha
