:!: My God! I was so moved I haven't been able to pick up another book yet, it's still all settling in my mind.

It's as if it's left a real imprint. I'm not usually changed so much by a book, but these characters felt as if they were so real!

Wow! Amazing read!

I read Memoirs right after it was published, and felt exactly the same way.

About 6 months ago, I re-read it, and enjoyed it just as throughly as the first time.. It's definitely a keeper.

I read it when it first came out, a couple years back, and I was also impressed. I think the author is very talented -- so good at bringing his characters to life! (Also, the fake translator's note at the beginning is a nice touch, to make it seem even more like it's really just an old woman recounting her life story, don't you think?)

I hear they're making a movie about this one. Spielberg, if I recall correctly. Anyone hear about this? Hopefully it will be done well, with lovely costumes. It would be easy to make a bad movie from this book, but much harder to make a good one. :)

Sorry Hollie! :)

It's an old retired geisha telling her life story. Everything from the time when she was sold to the geisha house as a little girl, through her training, her hardships and triumphs... very good!

Not what you thought at first huh, Hollie?
They were very revered, highly trained entertainers. Not um.."Ladies of Leisure"

It's a wonderful book. Very, very recommended.

They're still around, too, just a LOT fewer than before. Many people in Japan fear they won't be around much longer, because girls don't want to be geisha anymore, and so there are fewer & fewer of them being trained.

If you're ever in Japan, go to Kyoto. Not only is it the cultural center of Japan (it was the capital for 1000 years, give or take a few :) ), but you can see geisha there. My friends and I used to see them walking around when we were out shopping and such. They were actually maiko (geisha-in-training), but with the elaborate costumes and white-painted faces, they definitely stand out.

Don't feel bad Hollie June ...

LMAO!

I love this book, I have read it at least a half-dozen times since I bought it for myself for Christmas several years ago.

I just found out that the author is being sued (http://www.ezipangu.org/english/contents/news/naname/geisha/geisha2.html) by the former Geisha he interviewed to get background for his story. And that she has now written her own book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743444329/ref=pd_sim_books_3/002-9812227-3184810?v=glance&s=books) that looks pretty interesting too.
