I'm going to talk a little about looks.
Up until I was 23 I strongly disliked my nose. I thought it was all sorts of ugly things and wanted to get a nose job done, because I thought my nose was responsible for everything that's gone wrong in my life. Everyone convinced me not to do it, though, so I didn't. And then one day when I was 23 I suddenly realized that my nose was beautiful!
When people talk about hating certain body parts, they often say "It would be as ridiculous as you saing you'd want to get a nose job". That's because they like my nose and are convinced that it's the one body part that I'm least likely to have had bad thoughts about.
The same goes for my legs. I used to think they were so ugly that I wore jeans all summer, even though it was hot and uncomfortable. One day it was so unbearably hot that I put on a skirt, and received so many compliments that I walked with my head in the clouds all day. And now I consider my legs to be one of my greatest assets (together with my nose :) ).
I just wanted to say that it could very well be the same with growing out your bangs. You have this idea that your forehead is ugly, and you've had your bangs most of your life. So when you try to grow them out you think you look ridiculous/ugly/old/whatever. I used to think that too, but when I pull my hair back from my face I usually receive compliments.
So... I wanted to give a little encouragement to those of you growing out your bangs. I started out hating the bare forehead look to, but suddenly something changed and I realized that I look ten times better without my bangs. And my older bangs-pictures simply don't look good anymore. Now I'll never go back to bangs again.
So hang in there, fellow bang-growers! Our perceptions of ourselves are often not how the rest of the world sees us. And our perceptions can change.
:)
