View Full Version : AC vinegar - Why is it good for hair?
Tea Lady October 6th, 2003, 08:14 PM Hi,
I was wondering exactly what AC vinegar does for hair. I used it the other day after henna, to "lock in" the color as per Madeleine's instructions. Actually I did a CO wash for the first time as well. My hair today was not greasy at all, which surprised me, since I used conditioner on the scalp as well.
Is the ACV meant for reducing oil (You know - like when you have oil and vinegar dressing and they separate!), or is it a type of conditioning agent? Is it a pH thing?
Thanks from clueless me,
Tea Lady
snippet October 6th, 2003, 11:16 PM I've used ACV all my life as a rinse. For me it strips any buildup and adds shine. I've later found out that it closes the cuticle (which creates the shine) and helps protect the shaft. I have oily hair too, and I think being a natural astringent, it helps keep the oiliness down some.
Teechia October 7th, 2003, 02:18 AM Personally, I've always been a little afraid of vinegar for my hair, since it is a mild ACID!!!! You can use it to clean ceramic tile, and you have to dilute it to one part vinegar and 10 parts water, cause if you don't it is so strong you can etch your tiles. (I am it the ceramic tile business, so I know)
So, I've always felt, if it's strong enough to etch tile I don't want to use it on my fragile hair.
Hugs,
Teechia
Elspeth30 October 7th, 2003, 02:47 AM There is an awesome article on vinager (its use, PH information, dilution ratios, etc.) Does anyone have a link to the Hair Vault? I think that is where I saw it.
Phyllislechat October 7th, 2003, 04:09 AM When I was a child, my mom always used a vinegar rinse on my hair, and it seemed to work just fine. However, as an adult who highlights and dyes her hair, I tried a vinegar rinse a couple of weeks ago and it left my hair feeling stripped and tangled. Is it recommended that a conditioner be used after the ACV rinse?
Axium October 7th, 2003, 04:13 AM I use a vinegar rinse after shampoo, leave it on and put on conditioner. I tried skipping it recently and could tell. It really does well for my ultra-fragile hair. It does lay the cuticle down, like a creme rinse does, so imparting shine, plus it adjusts the Ph, which is why the acid is a good thing. And it rinses the shampoo clean. Acid's nothing to get alarmed about in itself; every liquid falls somewhere between acidic and basic, no big deal. I ran out of the ACV, tho, and have been using red vinegar for a while now...
That article is good, hope someone has the link...
