View Full Version : What makes you take notice of someone else's hair?
Ellephant October 2nd, 2003, 05:53 AM A quick question for all of you, prompted by a guy I saw hanging around while I was shopping a couple of weeks ago. He had natural looking dreadlocks, pretty thick, reaching to his feet. I couldn't help but notice him, and I watched him until he vanished round a corner.
Anyway, the question is this - you're all in tune with people's hair, but what thing makes you sit up and take notice the most? Now, I don't mean "what do you see the most," but what is it about hair that'd make you stop what you're doing to watch the head wandering by instead? Is it colour, thickness, length...?
Answers on a postcard please...
morguebabe October 2nd, 2003, 06:20 AM I can not pick just one!
Length, color, thickness, and shine.
I notice shine and color most.
smythe_michael October 2nd, 2003, 06:48 AM I couldn't pick just one either.
Length certainly.....any braided style or nice updo will catch my eye...even at a long distance.
And definitely anything unique. (and that would go for short or long hair)
Every now and then....especially when I used to ride the train this past spring.....there was this one lady who had brown hair about hip length, that sat near me 5 or 6 times.
On certain days, the train would move in and out of lighter or darker areas, and watching her hair in all the different lighting conditions was almost like watching a show. It was spectacular....at times her hair almost seemed black, and almost seemed blonde at others. (It's a wonder I didn't miss my stop)
Persephone October 2nd, 2003, 06:50 AM Length, and shine. And thick hair too. I will watch a fat braid until it goes out of sight... braid envy? Not me... ;)
ladybug October 2nd, 2003, 06:50 AM Shiny, healthy hair that moves always gets my attention. I like to see well-cared for hair no matter what the color, length, or type!
(I shudder when I see hair that's been fried, teased, overprocessed, or helmet-like. I think any of the above is very aging on a person.)
Ellephant October 2nd, 2003, 07:20 AM :) Yep...I know that it's not an easy choice to make, as they're all noticeable things - I just wondered which one was...er...well, for want of a better turn of phrase, which one was the main culprit.
DweamGoiL October 2nd, 2003, 07:22 AM I chose quality, but for me, it's really length as well.
Pixna October 2nd, 2003, 07:54 AM Length, and shine. And thick hair too. I will watch a fat braid until it goes out of sight... braid envy? Not me... ;)
Yup, yup, yup!! One of these days I'll probably get arrested for braid stalking!! ;) :D
bellawave October 2nd, 2003, 09:10 AM I chose good quality because I'll always look at
a beautiful head of hair, whether long or short, any
color or style. I am particularly prone to staring
at curlyheads as I have serious curl envy. :) I'll also
study people who have hair types similar to mine, thinking
what I would look like if I cut or styled it like
theirs etc.
I have caught people looking at my hair too, even
though there's nothing really extraordinary
about it. One day when my waves were more prominent
than usual, I saw another wavy studying me out
of the corner of her eye, and her hand went up to do
a sort of surreptitious scrunch to her top layer. Then
I realized I often do the same thing. ;)
snippet October 2nd, 2003, 09:51 AM My vote was for the crazy hair. I'll spot them a mile away and take notice. I like different hats, braids, fun hair toys, new styles, and the like. Even short styles that are different attract my eye.
I'm always looking for different boys hair cuts to give my son suggestions, but alas, they are pretty much the same. Well except for the ones that are totally off center and couldn't go to school.
And curlie (curly?) hair! Oh, I think that's a close second to crazy hair. Maybe even above crazy hair!
Sara October 2nd, 2003, 10:24 AM I'm going to say length, color, and quality. I can't stand to see when someone has long hair that is obviously damaged.
wurmfood October 2nd, 2003, 11:34 AM Color and length, though I voted color as that has more of an effect on me.
Rather, think of it this way: Someone with particualr colors of hair will be noticed for that, then how long the hair is. Other people are noticed first for the length of the hair.
Madeleine October 2nd, 2003, 12:03 PM Color and length, though I voted color as that has more of an effect on me.
Rather, think of it this way: Someone with particualr colors of hair will be noticed for that, then how long the hair is. Other people are noticed first for the length of the hair.
My thoughts exactly! A readhead gets my attention no matter what length. Other colours need to have one of the other attributes to stand out for me.
One thing that isn't a poll option would be updos. I often study women's updos until I figure out how they did them - always trying to learn I guess. Most updos I see are done with barrettes or claws though, I like the ones that are held with pins, sticks, forks and combs better (cause those are my favourite accessories and they're more unusual since not everyone knows how to use them).
Anne October 2nd, 2003, 04:18 PM Length, and shine. And thick hair too. I will watch a fat braid until it goes out of sight... braid envy? Not me... ;)
Me too! I don't have a huge, fat braid, so I'm just in awe when I see one.
I voted well cared for, but it's really a combo of length and well cared for and thickness too.
Teacherbear October 2nd, 2003, 05:00 PM I actually clicked on the Crazy hair . . . something about revenge of a bad divorce. That option!
I tend to notice what blechy things people do to their hair.
I have one friend who has those obviously gold tips on short spikey darker brown hair. I personally think it is so tacky.
Another friend was soooooo excited about her new "I look like I got caught in a wind storm when my hair was wet, then stuck a finger in a socket" hair do. Most days she doesn't "do" her hair, so it just hangs there . . . . all blah . . . . then when she "does" it it looks bad too! ;)
Then there is the lady whose hair looks like it comes out of a mold . . . always the same, even though it is just beyond her shoulders. I can't imagine how much gel and gunk she uses on it!!
The second thing I notice is length.
Leeann October 2nd, 2003, 10:35 PM I say quality. To me, healthy looking hair is the most important thing. However, I also notice "bad hair" a lot too. It's not like I try to nitpick everyone's hair I see, but things like a bad dye job make me cringe. And I can't stand seeing those messy, unkempt topknots that just look like a tangled mess. I almost want to go up to them and say "Oh your poor hair! What the heck are you doing that for?" But of course I never do :)
LongRed October 4th, 2003, 04:04 AM For me, it's color, shine and length!
All being good, of course! :)
Accolady October 5th, 2003, 11:09 AM .
.I tend to notice condition of hair, more on the bad side.
It is not out of criticism but rather the realization that there
are many out there who do not have the knowledge about
hair care needed to have hair in good healthy condition.
I don't really take note of healthy hair as much because
I assume for the most part that the person with nice hair
has had opportunity to learn about hair care, or has
the finances available to have hair changes made...
dyes, frosts, highlighting, perming, etc. and not just a home
completed job which often results in disaster.
Many times I see a woman with that particular kind of hair,
hair with potential, if only...if only.
While it doesn't take high dollar products, it does help
to have a good combination of knowledge and resources.
I often entertain the idea of approaching the local salons
to see if they would allow a booth for long hair care, but the
ladies who need the most help are not in the salons, nor
can they afford them.
Sunsailing October 5th, 2003, 11:49 AM 1. Quality
2. Length
3. Color (especially red!)
I guess the same things I want in my hair. Quality being #1, then length.
Meezer October 14th, 2003, 03:41 PM I voted for quality... I can spot well cared for straight AND curly hair from a mile away! It usually blinds me with shine and body! LOL! :)
Cowgal October 21st, 2003, 09:40 AM Oh, definately condition. I always notice nice hair no matter what the length. I saw a lady with a simple bob a few weeks ago, nothing special about the style, but her hair was incrediable! It was so shiny and sleek and wow! It was dark dark brown. Gorgeous hair.
I notice length too, but I guess condition the most, because I am not a short hair fan but I WILL stare and admire it if it's in lovely condition.
Mop October 23rd, 2003, 01:06 PM Quality - especially if it's a hair type similar to mine, I will stare as long as I dare (ooo... my hair could look like THAT!). Length would be a second choice - long hair is uncommon in this neck of the woods. And I must admit, bad quality catches my eye as well, probably b/c I have a mean streak  . I feel secretly pleased when I see a picture of some celebrity and their hair is fried beyond recognition. MEOW!
Karrinne October 25th, 2003, 05:11 PM Definitely condition. I notice people's hair in a crowd and the person with the obviously well cared for hair grabs my eye. As well as the person with hair past their butt.
Lady of the Lake October 27th, 2003, 05:40 AM I voted for the first option - a pretty, natural (looking) colour is always stunning. But actually, it's a combination of a very nice colour, good quality and length that makes me turn my head.
MemSahib November 12th, 2003, 11:04 AM (I'm a little late on this.) Probably length and condition are the top two items, but... if I see a woman with fabulous silver or white hair, I'm transfixed. So often the silverhairs are permed into a frizzy poodle — ick.
Carolyn February 21st, 2004, 05:36 AM I didn't vote as I don't know which one to pick. I think I would notice length first but I also notice quality. I always look at long hair. Sometimes I'm thinking ohgosh she needs a trim, those ends are nasty. Or its why doesnt she wash it or why does she use that horrid color. I do notice short hair too. Most of the time I'm thinking gosh she would look so nice with her hair long but every now and then I think now that's a cute short cut. It really suits her. I notice if it's thin or thick and most of all if it's well cared for and healthy. Hair is the first thing I notice about a person. I would never go around touching someone's hair as in the past option above. I would freak if a stranger did that to me. I'm getting more and more aware of my personal space.
melisanda February 23rd, 2004, 02:50 AM Hair is the first thing I notice about a person too (has been ever since joining this forum). The condition, the color (I admit I'm biased towards dark colors, they get my attention quicker). I'm also quick to notice if somebody is wearing hair unfriendly toys. Sometimes during lectures, when I'm really bored, I observe other women's hair and think how can they be dyeing their hair that dreadful color , which hair style would suit them better etc... (I think way too much about other people's hair-and about my own too!!)
Pixna February 23rd, 2004, 10:49 AM I tend to notice great length, great healthy hair, or unusual or particularly stunning colors. Yesterday I noticed a woman with clearly dyed, near-white platinum blonde hair. She was a youngish woman (well, younger than I am :D ) and seemed reasonably hip and fashionable (well, more than I am :D ). It was such an unnatural color, and I kept looking at it (trying not to stare and be impolite) and wondering what she would look like with a more natural color. I also kept thinking how strange it would be to wake up and see that color hair on my pillow, or for her husband to wake up and see it  (he was with her and looked really down to earth -- not flashy). I think sometimes colors that are clearly from a box look harsh and make the person look harsh, too, even they really aren't.
longhairlover February 24th, 2004, 06:56 AM Hair quality for me. Like others, I am drawn to great looking helathy hair. I also find long, straight hair to always draw my attention. I also tend to prefer natural colored hair, as I always look for the artiificially colored signs.
curlsntexas February 26th, 2004, 07:26 AM Voted for color......I am amazed by the many different natural colors..........but someone with red or black hair will get my attention, and admiration.
summr February 26th, 2004, 07:26 AM I love length, long hair stands out to me but I also love color. The other thing that stands out to me are long curls, I have seen a few women with incredible long corkscrews/curls, and they are breath taking.
E. February 26th, 2004, 12:34 PM I am a freak...IŽll either dream and notice nothing or if I donŽt I am a very watchful observer. IŽll see *anything* in just a second. But I found out the hair that I will look after is the hair IŽd love to have by myself: dark color (from auburn to black), thick, healthy, long and wavy or curly. This combinations overwhelms me and makes me green with envy.
Kat February 27th, 2004, 06:49 PM I tend to notice BAD hair the most! I just realized this is something I've done for years.
There's my cousin, who had hair in junior high and high school that I always thought looked so dry and sort of lifeless...that was back when MY hair was still nice and soft, *sigh* Where have those days gone?
There was also my friend in high school who had long hair, but it was so full of split ends and broken off in different lengths, all of it very obviously visible, that you wondered why she kept it long. I promised myself then that if I ever had long hair and it didn't stay in good condition, I would cut it off and not stubbornly hang on...I'm almost on the verge of that but I'm going to try to repair it first because I LOVE my long hair...
Then there is a girl at my school who has to have the WORST condition of hair in the world. It's blonde (obviously dyed) and "curly"--more like frizzy. Looks incredibly damaged, like maybe she's piled dye job over dye job and possibly perm over perm. She usually wears it up in this scary-looking "poof" on top of her head, but when she has it down, it looks dry and thin and sort of sticks out from her head diagonally as if it is so damaged half of it has fallen out and it won't even hang straight down anymore. This hair is just screaming, "PLEASE SHAVE HER HEAD AND PUT MY ENDS OUT OF THEIR MISERY AND LET ME GROW BACK IN NATURALLY!!" I mean, I can almost hear it calling out, like an abandoned kitten or something. I feel so sorry for it!! Hers is the hair in the worst condition I have EVER seen on ANYONE.
I also notice what I consider to be bad styles and bad dye jobs, but those are mostly subjective so I keep them to myself lest someone get mad at me for voicing it. But bad hair condition is a thing that most people agree is just not good, I think...
anniespagani February 27th, 2004, 07:17 PM I clicked on the Nasty hair. There is a nurse on the floor where I am doing my student nursing and she died her extremely short hair a horrible blonde color (her hair is normally very dk. brown) and then every day she puts a different highlight in it. Always flourescent pink or green or blue. It's absolutely horrible.
smiles March 1st, 2004, 08:43 PM too many things - couldnt select just one.
color - dark midnight black color..
length - classic and more
quality - wonderfully conditioned
thick - but not too thick... that looks scary
soft/shiny/spidersilky/sleek straight hair
beautiful curls on well conditioned hair - doesnt matter short, longth.. i love it
Absalom March 14th, 2004, 08:37 PM For me, it has to be length for sure. Having almost knee length hair myself I tend to take notice of waist length or longer hair. Absalom
Stephanie May 2nd, 2004, 04:42 PM Definitely well-taken care of hair. The length is the next in line and then the gloss. I love long, healthy looking, glossy hair.
exclusively di May 2nd, 2004, 07:33 PM I voted well cared for. I just love hair, and when I see somebody with well cared for hair I admire it. It doesn't matter if it is short or long.
I always notice hairstyles. Especially long hair and styles. How I think they suit the wearer, and if they are long, how they did them and can I replicate them.
I always notice red - auburn hair.
Gaijin May 2nd, 2004, 10:18 PM I put if it's good quality, although color gets me to notice it too. Redheads definitely hold my gaze because I think it's very pretty and I wonder if it's their natural color etc. But if it's healthy and shiny and with absolutely no wispies or baby hairs sticking out, then I wonder what products they use to get hair like that. Longer hair tends to hold my attention more too.
requiemofroses May 2nd, 2004, 11:38 PM Wow...such a tough choice. I think color would be first, because whether it's anywhere from hot pink to a natural, stunning red or a deep, crushed velvet onyx, etc...the actual color grabs me first. Then, it's most definitely quality and length. I'm utterly envious of beautiful, shiny, well taken care of hair. I'm mystified by the perfection of healthy, luxurious hair. (Especially if they don't have those baby hair flyaways like I do! )
Snowymoon May 3rd, 2004, 12:37 AM Since starting this board, hair watching has become a new sport for me. Here in the midwest, I see a lot more short/damaged/badly colored and permed hair more than I see natural, long and/or well-cared for hair. I really try to look it all to see differences, but I do see more bad hair than good hair. Most are pixie cuts or layers. So much dry hair for a place that gets so little sun! There is a smaller portion of long/well-cared for hair, but you can find it if you keep your eyes open. When I do see the purty hair, (color, length and quality with quality being what I am really looking for) I am in complete admiration. I have not brought myself to make public compliments though. People here don't seem to like to talk to strangers too much. But anyhoo, hair watching is fun to do when out and about. ;)
Jennifer May 3rd, 2004, 03:32 AM If someone has really long hair then I do take notice, but what really makes me look at it to the point I can't look away, is if someone has gorgeous healthy looking hair. So, that's how I voted. I love seeing soft looking, shiny, healthy, well kept hair!
catgreens May 3rd, 2004, 06:31 AM Long hair worn loose always grabs my attention. I always wonder if I'm looking at a friend from LHC! I want to start chatting about split ends and CO washes but I'm too shy.
Amylovelylocks May 11th, 2004, 08:26 PM I voted for the length because it does scream out attention. When I am out I see a lot of people sneak looks at it.
FlyBabyTina May 16th, 2004, 04:59 PM Length and color equally.... my 4 year old son has multi-tonal red/strawberry blonde/blonde hair so I always notice the redheads! I have always taken notice of long hair. Long hair on little kids always looks so cute, especially if it is well taken care of.
LILBERT November 3rd, 2004, 02:09 AM I picked the length of it, because thats usually what i notice first. But also the condition of it, sometimes its such a horrible condition, you just cringe. :scared:
Feye November 3rd, 2004, 03:38 AM I voted for the great quality, but in reality it's rather the person that makes me take notice of the hair than the other way around. I don't find hair pretty on it's own, I find it pretty together with the person wearing it, if that makes sense. Therefore I can be totally blown away by a bald head too. But I usually go for length.
The quality is always important for me, though.
michaelw November 3rd, 2004, 05:06 AM Given the choices, it is a little hard to select only one. I selected "It's such good quality - I'd spot well cared-for hair a mile away. " as my choice, however, I think there are multiple items on the list that make me take notice as well:
"It's an incredible colour - colour just leaps out at me! "
"It's so fine! It looks like glittering spider-silk...just beautiful."
"The length of it! Really long hair just screams for notice! "
Melusina November 3rd, 2004, 06:08 AM Shiny, healthy hair that moves always gets my attention. I like to see well-cared for hair no matter what the color, length, or type!
(I shudder when I see hair that's been fried, teased, overprocessed, or helmet-like. I think any of the above is very aging on a person.)
Same here. Really well cared for hair gets my attention as much as super long hair or a dramatic color.
Meg_Evenstar November 4th, 2004, 05:34 PM Thick, full and long hair is striking and I notice it right away.
Meg
poetryofacherry November 4th, 2004, 08:49 PM i notice good quality a mile away usually because i always wish i had such hair.
FlowerHair November 5th, 2004, 01:18 AM I am known for staring at other people's long and thick hair! When I was in India my neck almost broke from watching so many beautiful heads of hair.
Jesmiasan November 5th, 2004, 02:34 AM I'd have to say the length and thickness.
Morticia December 6th, 2004, 03:20 AM I always admire shiny healthy hair. If hair is long, but dull and damaged, it doesn't get my attention as much as well cared for hair, whether long or short.
Natchen13
Tap Dancer December 6th, 2004, 03:29 AM "It's such good quality - I'd spot well cared-for hair a mile away."
I love shiny, healthy hair. However, bad (meaning extremely dry, frizzy, damaged) hair catches my eye as well. I always feel bad for the person.
Lina December 6th, 2004, 05:56 AM I can't pick just one either. Some of the neon colors are really eye catching. Some horrible dye jobs are that are growing out are very eye catching and disturbing. In the land of big hair (Texas), some really big hair is scary and eye catching.
I admit I look at hair and eyes first. How well the hair is maintained is probably top in my list but I think shine goes with condition and length is second.
There is a lady at my work that has mid-calf curly red hair that is amazing. I can't help but watch her hair when I see her.
There is also another lady here that has hair to her waist and it is just awful. I want to give her some conditioner but the damage is probably not repairable. She makes me cringe EVERY time I see her. ICK!
Dahabibi December 6th, 2004, 06:08 AM I usually turn my head when someone has really beautiful, well cared for hair. But length matters too, I don't tend to notice short-hairs so much.
I also notice people with extremely ugly hair.
I know a girl with almost hip length hair, It would have been beatiful if she took good care of it, but no... she probably bleached it platinum blonde once, so the bottom half of her hair is yellowish wite and very dry and scraggly looking, and the rest is her natural color. Also, she pust a gallon of wax or something in it, it looks disgusting and greasy and sticky and just yuck. If she cut half her hair off and just let it fall naturally, it would be beautiful...
So I notice that kind of thing too.
zift December 6th, 2004, 07:36 AM Actually it depends weather we talk about men or women. If we talk about men I'Ll spot/sense/feel long hair if it's longer than the shoulders. And if a waist or below length haired men passess around I won't just spot/sense/feel but stare and stare and stare hahaha ( I'M a woman right;) ) But if it was a woman, thickness vs length.
PS: My boyfriend has long hair+beard ;) which means that just staring wasn't enough for me hahaha
Bloop December 6th, 2004, 10:51 AM If I only had to pick one thing from there, it would be length. I dont really notice nice healthy short hair, just doesnt jump out at me, but if i see someone w/ tailbone or thigh length hair, that totally jumps out at me and makes me turn my head.
But if I could pick numerous from that list, it would be long, healthy and very think hair. I've seen a few of those, and I always go up to them and complement them, because its just amazing. I could stare at that all day. I literly mean... all day.
CurlyBrunette December 7th, 2004, 04:27 PM I ALWAYS notice length on a man or a woman. I find myself staring at people sometimes who have long healthy hair. I also notice hair that is in bad shape. When I am on line at the grocery store or any store, I find myself looking at peoples hair and judging them. Wow, look how fried her hair is? Or, What was she thinking when she got that haircut? I think that I am a little too critical sometimes.
KarenLynn December 8th, 2004, 02:57 AM There are a lot of things that make me notice someone's hair - I can't choose just one thing.
Color is one - a striking dye job or a wonderful natural color.
Length - I tend to notice either extreme.
Health - again, either extreme gets my attention.
Style - I have been known to stare at an interesting updo way longer than common courtesy allows.
Negative attention most usually due to a horrid dye job and cut, resulting in beehive hair carefully sprayed/waxed into place, or limp, stringy, damaged hair that should never have been layered. Ick.
Positive attention often due to one or more of color, length, thickness, texture and style. There's a lot of beautiful hair out there, and most people in their twenties seem to keep it down, even at almost classic length. Amazing.
toosexy1 December 8th, 2004, 03:54 PM Im a feeler. At work when im talking to someone, i ask questions about what shampoo and conditioner they use (most say suave), then after staring for some time i reach out and touch the hair. And i always walk away with the good feeling that my hair is much softer. lol. They're quite used to me and often tease me about "wasting money" on expensive hair products
Dianyla December 8th, 2004, 04:00 PM Im a feeler. At work when im talking to someone, i ask questions about what shampoo and conditioner they use (most say suave), then after staring for some time i reach out and touch the hair.
I certainly hope you're asking for their permission before you reach over and touch their hair? If not, please consider adding that little step in to the routine. :flower:
Autumn December 8th, 2004, 04:10 PM I prefer shiny hair with unusual color, style, and texture. Very long hair facinates me because I have never had my hair longer than bs length.
hjlnal December 30th, 2004, 04:36 AM The length really stands out to me.
vanillaswirl January 4th, 2005, 04:24 PM The first thing I notice is the quality of someones hair regardless of it's length. I don't know why, but healthy shiney hair is one of the most beautiful things to me. The majority of people I see have damaged hair from processing. That seems to be the craze is to color, dye, and highlight, and at first it looks great, but it always leaves behind damaged hair which is a shame. I rarely even see what looks like virgin hair anymore.
I am one to talk, I am in the process of growing out some highlights I got and I promised myself I will never highlight my hair again. The damage it causes in the end is not worth it to me. I have about 4 inches or so left on the bottom of my hair which I will eventually cut off.
Speedbump January 4th, 2005, 05:42 PM For me, quality of hair is first, but then color and length are close seconds. And if you get all three...well! I BRAKE 4 GR8 HAIR. LOL
Speedy
yseult January 4th, 2005, 05:50 PM You know, it's funny... I haven't really thought about what I notice before now.
I have quickly come up with some conclusions though.
I seem to notice...
a) ALL men with long hair, no matter what color or condition or what the man looks like, because it is so unique.
b) ALL redheads, no matter what length. And you can tell if it's natural.
c) ALL natural long-haired blondes. this is a bit more difficult in Texas, but the condition of the hair gives it away.
d) ALL natural very dark/ black hair, very ENVIOUSLY, especially if it is long and shiny.
e) ALL waist-length and longer hair, very ENVIOUSLY.
f) ALL well-cared-for curlies, again ENVIOUSLY.
Another note: reflecting, men seem to really like super-long hair (they can't stop staring) and curly hair a lot. I'm surprised that growing super-long hair is not more common among women for this reason.
Pilgrim January 4th, 2005, 05:56 PM My first thought, before seeing the poll choices was condition, so I voted quality. (Which I am sadly lacking now myself because of a bad color job :wail: ). But I think long hair in good condition is even more noticeable and will turn my head.
Julie
fairygirl69 January 5th, 2005, 05:38 AM Actually it's a combination of length color, style and the care someone takes to maintain it. If some one has ill taken care of hair with a style that went out 30 years ago it kind of makes me cringe. I like beatiful classicly style hair that looks like it would look good no mater what year we're in. Pretty hair = well taken care of.
bradio January 5th, 2005, 05:45 AM your curls are perfect. i would certainly notice that.Bradio
Alva January 16th, 2005, 07:26 AM Things that get my attention are when it is really long, so the length. Shiny healthy hair gets my attention also. And strange enough also people that have hair that is awfully abused. I can't understand why people treat their hair so bad sometimes.
I also notice men with long hair. yesterday for example I saw a man of around 40 years old with waist length hair. I just had to stare at that for a while  A nice bunch of well taken care of curls gets my attention too :flower:
kissedbyfyre January 17th, 2005, 01:01 PM It's hard to choose just one!
I choose length, because no matter what the quality of hair, longer hair catches my attention easier than any thing else. Waist and beyond and I tend to find myself almost staring at the person. But sadly, in person, I've yet to see long hair that's well cared for. They're always dry, destroyed and look like they need at least 5" taken off to remove the dry, frazzled ends.
Color also pops out at me. I've got a natural weakness for natural redheads. I always end up wondering if I stand out as much as they do, knowing full well I probably stand out even more due to my length and sense of style. I also love wild, wacky colors that simply don't exist in nature. Blues, purples, deep vampire like reds, etc. It makes me miss my wacky colored hair.
Quality is another big thing. I more often than not see hair that's been run over by so many products and harsh chemicals. One day I'd love to see natural, healthy hair in person.
I also notice texture. Straight and silky fine with blinding shine, thick hair full of curls. More often than not it's hair that isn't like mine.
Volkswillow January 17th, 2005, 02:51 PM I know, I've already replie on here, but since then, I've changed my mind.
I find I notice hair that's icky and damaged, frizzy, crunchy, first, because in a sick, twisted kinda way, it makes me feel better.
Though, i definately have seen hair that makes me stop and go 'wow' - shine, colur, length - whatever - apart from damage, there's no single thing that makes me notice hair. Maybe I don't notice it so much because there's not much to be seen where I am
predislava January 20th, 2005, 04:31 PM All of the hair qualities listed are important. I voted for length, although condition and color jump out almost, if not equally, as much.

amiaow January 29th, 2005, 11:00 PM I notice quality on most people- nothing more beautiful than a well cared for, shiny head of virgin hair! It's quite a rare sight these days.
Length too. Although I'm really not into hair past tailbone these days (and I do realise what an amazing feat it is, it's just not my thing anymore), I will definitely notice a gorgeous head of long hair.
Unfortunately I also notice the many heads of hair that need some love!!!!
flame January 30th, 2005, 04:24 AM Whatever stands out most. Mostly, its overall condition combined with length and shine.
Daneille January 30th, 2005, 04:43 AM I just notice hair period. Healthy, damaged, short, long, good cut, bad cut, all of it.

enna January 30th, 2005, 06:45 AM I'm definately one of those touchy people - but in a raised-with-the-manners-of-the-old-south kinda way .... i see pretty hair and i love to just watch it move... then if i get a chance, if theres a moment where asking is only a little bold, i ask if i can touch... its pretty easy to do with guys who have long hair. Who doesn't like to have their hair petted?! Long haired males get picked on for it enough, i think, that when they get praise and a chance to get petted, they tend to take it... at least the ones i know do.
natural one January 30th, 2005, 08:38 AM i always notice shiny, well-cared-for hair, whatever the length. and i'm always checking out other people's styles. i'm known to ask how they did it, after offering a compliment of course.
mandalyn January 30th, 2005, 08:39 AM Color, I voted for color. I'm a natural redhead, so I always notice other redheads (I wonder if people who aren't redheads notice us...?).
Next, I notice other curlies. I live in SW Florida, so I'm always amazed by those girls who are able to achieve perfect, well-defined curls in our unbelievable humidity. (Envy, envy, envy.)
Since I've been reading this forum, I've been noticing long hair (especially long, healthy hair) much, much more than I ever did before.
LittleFlower January 30th, 2005, 04:55 PM I would notice length first and updos using hairsticks (still don't see much of that around here). On the flipside, over-bleached, over-colored, fried hair also catches my eye but not exactly in a good way...
eilla04 January 30th, 2005, 07:07 PM I voted well cared for hair. Whenever I see someone's hair that looks well cared for I stare. I even gave a girl a compliment the other day because she had beautiful hair. I have had people say to me lately that they would pay a lot of money to have their hair look like mine. Really boosts the ego. I also stare at long hair. You just cant help it.

Elle January 30th, 2005, 07:19 PM Since this is my husband's poll from long ago, perhaps I should add my opinion. I'm surprised that I never did.
First of all, length is what makes me take immediate notice of someone's hair. After that it's quality.
I notice that there's A LOT of people around who just don't take care of their hair. I find myself standing in the lines at grocery stores, checking out people's hair... wondering what on earth they did to their hair to get it in the condition it's in.
You don't see very many healthy heads of hair around nowadays. Lots of damaged, blowfried, plastered hair.
spunkymonki87 July 1st, 2005, 07:15 PM woopie! I'm dragging this out...
I voted quality, bad quality, but I notice both extremes as well. Both healthy hair and brutalized hair snag my attention equally. Well-cared for hair is always lovely to look at...unfortunately, I mostly observe this on small children for some reason.
Zelda July 1st, 2005, 08:03 PM I especially notice hair that is well taken care of, and of course, hair that is long. I don't know anyone in real life save for myself who is growing their hair to longer lengths, so when I do witness long hair it always catches my eye.
I also can't help but notice hair that has undergone one to many chemical treatments.
winter July 1st, 2005, 11:55 PM I notice most hair, but mostly I notice bad hair, and just want to go and give them some good advice..
Stagecoach July 2nd, 2005, 02:57 AM They have CRAZY hair. Some stylist has taken out revenge for his divorce on their scalp. Thats what I voted, but really the first thing I notise about hair is it's style. Nice or not.
curls2grow July 2nd, 2005, 03:15 AM Quality. Shine, nice looking ends, thickness, etc. Those are things that catch my eye.
Nightside July 2nd, 2005, 06:53 AM I generally notice length, this is what strikes me first, but I can notice the color too. Black long hair always catches my eye!
Nalia July 2nd, 2005, 10:39 AM Definitely the length. Really long hair stands out for notice to me, since I don't often see it. I see everything else, but don't see length a lot.
bionicman July 2nd, 2005, 11:27 PM Length certainly. But thickness and quality too. All three and I am dangerously distracted. Life is too short to notice the negatives!
Catladyintown July 3rd, 2005, 01:10 AM I really feel sorry for people who have unhealthy hair. You know it must make them very depressed.
AngelinIvy July 18th, 2005, 09:15 PM the health and shine, then the thickness. then the length. then the color.
Fia July 18th, 2005, 11:08 PM Usually quality, closely followed by length and color.
HoiLei July 19th, 2005, 02:06 AM I voted quality. I love well tended hair! Especially if the ends are full. I notice long curly hair more than long staight hair. It really makes my jaw drop! Waist length curls are fantastic!
Unfortunately, I notice bad hair as well. It's natural to notice the bad. But I try to overcome it. I like to imagine the person with healthy hair in a natural color.
HoiLei.
zone doubt July 19th, 2005, 02:49 AM I often admire thick, long, and/or healthy heads of hair. However, when I think about what stands out in memory as some of the most gorgeous hair I've seen, it's actually ultrafine, silky hair. It has a very ethereal beauty to me :cloud9:
mermaidlullaby July 19th, 2005, 02:53 AM Healthy hair is wonderful! Natural and beautiful really makes my heart happy!
i_love_nemo July 19th, 2005, 06:59 PM The color like when i see natural red hair i just go crazy I think that color is sooo pretty.
PattyE July 19th, 2005, 07:32 PM I just HAD to answer this one, LOL.
I think hair in the extremes (in eaither direction) attracts my attention, eaither for the good or (dare I say) for the worse!
My admiration of someone elses hair tends to generate from my personal perceptions of what I dream as of being ideal. example: I want long, wavy shiny blonde hair (which is what I have) so that is what I would notice in another persons' hair, I guess. I also notice really long and thick hair, because mine tries to be so, but is not yet as thick as I'd like.
Patty
Athena's Owl July 19th, 2005, 08:32 PM what i've been noticing lately?
Natural.
Now, natural is a specific thing the african american hair, but I'm constantly noticing women who are giving up the lye, taking out the extensions, and just going with the hair they really have. and it's neat.
I was at an SF con earlier in the month and I saw a lot of women with long hair - and most of it was quite frazzled, dry, and damaged looking, especially at the bottom. I sort of nodded and realized that hair *care* is the core of it, no matter what length you've got...
GoddessLocks July 19th, 2005, 08:39 PM I would have to say the length...Length is something that can be amazing...I mean if you see someone with hair down to their knees, or something...youre not just going to walk by like you see it every day. lol
BAILEYSCREAM2 July 20th, 2005, 12:51 AM For me it's the thickness as well as the length followed by shine. But if hair is really thick and healthy I notice that first.
Patty lou July 20th, 2005, 04:34 AM I didn't vote because style was not a option.
I notice fancy up-do styles especilly braided or edwardian
rolls and twists, I also like "Gibson" styles.
Patty lou
LaraCroft July 21st, 2005, 01:56 AM Length of course, but also really thick hair, probably because I have really superfine hair myself. I always wanted thick, full hair but have now realized that I never will. :(
Happyhomemama July 21st, 2005, 02:51 PM I voted length. I notice that for sure then shine, quaility, and color. Long, shiny, well kept hair. How can it not stand out!
Deanna
birdiefu July 23rd, 2005, 10:08 AM The first thing I notice is quality of hair. If it is well taken care of and shiney it catches my eye! Next is length, then anything out of the unusual about the hair. And I do love seeing a thick braid too! I'm a braid-envier :silly:
barlow_girl_06 July 23rd, 2005, 06:48 PM dyed and fryed hair is pretty much something that always draws my attention.
butterflydreams August 2nd, 2005, 01:59 PM length, shine & thickness ( in that order usually) always catch me attention.:)
