My husband got a windburn on his hands and exacerbated it by going gloveless yesterday when there was a negative 20 degree F windchill. The skin was red, cracked open and bleeding in spots. I had heard of treating dry skin by slathering the skin in vaseline and wearing rubber gloves to bed, but I have been trying to avoid petroleum products for skin, so we don't have any.
I mixed up a concoction and my incredibly skeptical husband was amazed at the improvement in his skin this morning. The skin was still somewhat red and inflamed, but felt much softer and well-moisturized.
What I did was combine (approximately) two parts lanolin, three parts coconut oil, and one part aloe vera gel. You have to mix this with your finger so that the coconut oil will melt into the mixture. It will be about the texture of a thick lotion (like baby lotion). Spread pure lanolin (which promotes healing) on any open, bleeding spots, and then smooth the lotion mixture thickly over the top of the entire chapped area. Then wear rubber or nitrile gloves over this to bed.
In the morning, remove the gloves and then wash away the excess lotion. I'm not sure if my husband used soap to do this, but personally I would not. Just rinse away what you can with warm water and then rub in what is left.
I hope someone here will find this useful!
