No, everyone has their own terminal length.

Not trimming won't make your hair grow more slowly. But if your ends are very damaged, they might break off just as quickly as the new hair grows in, meaning that you won't gain any length (even though your hair is still growing). My hair grows "faster" when I trim regularly because I'm cutting off the damage before it spreads up the hair strands.

No. The roots don't know what you do to the ends.

Will cutting hair stall growth? yes. Well, kind of. The hair will not grow longer if you are cutting off what grows.

Will cut hair still grow? Yes. Some people think that cutting hair increases growth. I don't.
both answers in case of typo

exactly!!since the the roots don't actually know how long the hair is,why are there terminal lengths??why doesn't it just keep growing forever?I've always wondered this...

I've always thought it was because some people's hair breaks off at a certain point. It doesn't matter that the hair is still growing, it's just that the ends break off so the length never increases.

The reason there are terminal lengths is because individual hairs don't stay in your scalp forever, there are basically 3 stages in the life cycle of a hair.....a growth phase which can be anything from 2 years upwards, i think the average is about 6 years growth. Then there's a resting phase, where it stays in the scalp but doesn't grow, then there's a shedding phase where it falls out and a new hair replaces it.
Here's a link to a recent thread that might explain it better...

Terminal length exists because each hair follicle has a growth cycle.

Your follicles are different in terms of how long they will grow a hair before that hair will stop growing, and then later fall out.

When your hair is long enough over all so that most all of your follicles can grow for their maximum time and not be cut at the other end, you have reached 'terminal length,' in terms of the overall length you are going to get.

It doesn't mean that your hair follicles all stop growing at once--but that the follicles with the longest growth cycle have been allowed to grow as long as they can before their hairs are released.

Most folks probably never know what their terminal length is because they cut it at some point as it grows (trim/S&D). I would think that only many tapered hairs (never been cut) at your ends, accompanied by no increase in length over a long period would be about the only way you could tell.

Oops, Chloe beat me to it.
