View Full Version : When Do You Lose Hairs

For me I tend to lose 2 hairs or more when I take my hair out of a ponytail.

Otherwise in the shower and afterwards combing I would lose a few hairs. In general how many hairs do you lose a day by handling your hair?

Oh gosh.. I've just come out of a terrible shedding-period so I'm not sure that I want to think about it! ;) 250 hairs a day would be average, I guess.. had days with more than 300! *shudder!* was seriously afraid to go bald at one point!
Now I'm down to... about a 100.. more or less..

Mostly it's worse when washing, combing (therefore - only gentle fingercombing for me now), and just as you say, handling my hair..
So you're indeed lucky if you only lose as you say: "a few hairs a day"

Good grief, just a few hairs a day?! Fortunate. I've been losing a lot lately it seems. I'm assuming it's weather related being it's mid-November in Canada. It's getting chilly!

i used to lose them all the time. Touching my hair, having it inside my coat, etc. This seems to have slowed but I still shed, especially during/after washing, therefore, am trying to wash less.

But my hair - at day 4 after washing - was just SO greasy (too much oiling?) and scalp so itchy that I had to CW and then do an SMT, and when I rinsed it found SOOO many hairs. I don't want to count them, it's too disheartening.

Only two hairs a day is nothing - I once read 100 a day is normal, is this true?!?

I probably lose around 100 to 150 a day, depending on how much I stressed my hair. I lost most of that when I do a scalp massage and then comb it out again. Last I counted, I lost 50 with the massage, so I assume that I'm losing 50 - 100 in just natural fall out that I don't see. I could be wrong though.

Still, I see most of it when actively handling my hair.

I lose most of mine when I'm working conditioner through my hair in the shower and finger detangling. I probably lose 50 then? 100 maybe? I only lose a few while combing. To tell you the truth, I never worried too much about it until I joined LHC. :silly:

I have a question: If we lose most of our hairs when we're handling it, does that mean that those hairs have already fallen out and we're just getting rid of them, or does it mean we're actually yanking the hairs out?

Two hairs a day is nothing. I have never counted mine. I figure it is between 50 and 100 though. I think that is about normal. I usually loose hair when I comb or brush (every other day). The rest of the time I just finger comb since I have curly hair. Otherwise I get a bad case of BIG hair!

My loss mostly occurs after a washing. When I squeeze out the water, I usually take a wad of hair as well. Then, when I comb it out, I end up with a lot more. I have never actually counted but did take heart when told it only appears to be more now because it is longer. The hairloss is one of the reasons I wash every other day. I hate to see all that hair!

Katze: yes, 75-100 hairs lost a day is average :)

Veralynn: I don't hope that you're pulling THAT hard ;) Ouch, must hurt!
As I see it, you lose the hair whose growth period is already over.. (or: hair lost due to stress, bad diet, hormone changes, seasons changing etc.)
If you do a scalp massage, for example, you just make'em fall out a bit sooner.. but they would fall out eventually :) so your first assumption was, as I see it, correct!

I'd say I lose 50-75 hairs while washing my hair, and another 25 sometime immediately post-shower. I lose very little hair the rest of the day, if any. I stopped counting because it was upsetting! But I think I'm a pretty standard 100-hairs-a-day shedder, and I'm really not too concerned about it since I've got a lot of hair.

I shed more when washing, but I think that is mainly due to extensive scalp massage and the hairs were already loose anyway. I lose probably 50-100 hairs while washing, but probably 25 or so on the non-wash days. I only wash my hair every 3-4 days so the loss is not that pronounced.

It is almost six months since I moved into the US and 4 months since I joined LHC.
I am loosing the same amount of hair say 40+ everyday.
Initially I was worried but now I am just living with it:silly:

I lose loads. Especially in the shower when I work my condish through. Worryingly I lost batloads today as I put too much shea butter in, and could get my comb through the matted mop that occurred. Oops. I had to wash it again twice to get the goop out.

I am bad to my hair. :(

I lose the most when I'm rinsing my conditioners. I guess because of the 'slip'. I have to clean the bath-filter twice when I wash. That sounds like a lot, but I feel it's still pretty normal (100-150 hairs? once every 8 days). We only have a very small filter there and the hairs get tangled in each other. During the week my shedding is a lot less. I comb once a day and lose some hairs (30-40?). Nothing alarming... I think my ponytail circumference has actually increased during the last year because of me treating my hair better.

I also lose mostly in the shower when I condition. Not as much as I used to now that I have a better hair care routine. I used to loose a lot when I would color my hair, it was scary!

I meant lose a lot not loose! I am having a bad spelling day!

Well, today I lost about 50 hairs while COing and combing through with my fingers. I think I lose another 50 while brushing them (I brush twice a day), and then maybe 30 to 50 hairs wherever I am standing or going.

Parents, brother and bf already complained about all those ling-ish hairs in the bathroom, on the couch, in bed, on clothes (not only mine!!!), etc. I suppose they'll have to live with it *eg*

The majority of my shedding happens when I wash. 30-60 in the shower, and probably around 20+ afterward. On non-washing days, I lose probably 10.
Not too long ago I was flipping out about this amount, now it doesn't bother me so much.

I've never really counted how many hairs I lose in a day. I did a coconut oil treatment last night and lost what seemed like a lot just getting it all through my hair and then today rinsing it out, I lost what seems like my normal daily amount. I thought it would be less. I've been brushing less though, so this is probably part of it.

Till 6 months ago I never kept tab... then about 2 months ago, it was 25-30 hairs a day... this month it has been about 50-60 hairs. Today I hit century - 120 hairs while just oiling :(... I'm terrified to wash now. Since I'm a type i (ponty tail dia less than 2 inches) this is very, very depressing.

Wassup with this? Is it bcos of seasonal change or something? And thing is about 50% of the shed hair are short ones. So I'm losing new hair as well? They don't seem to fall from the scalp at all, they just fall out from the length when I detangle or when I spread the oil with my fingertips.... :?

Any input from LHCers, esp. type i people.... will be deeply appreciated.

Smara, you mean you're measuring the diameter?
You should be measuring the circumference..
That will give you a bigger measurement.

I lose hair in my brush and in the shower. I also shed hair and find it on everything including stuck to my partner. I have been shedding a lot more than I used to. I used to shed only a few hairs in my brush and shower now I am removing enough hair that it looks like a small mouse from the drain. I don't know what has happend that I went from 20-30 hairs to the 100+. I am hopeing it goes back to the way it was soon.

I lose very few when I WO, most of the hair comes out when I detangle and comb out. I'd say dozens per day when I detangle and comb, near zero if I leave it up continuously (of course, extra shedding afterwards)

I don't really lose that much....I've never counted but the tub drain has hardly any in there, and I have very few on my clothes (the hair is white....the clothes are black...I'd notice), and maybe 6 in my comb or brush. I'm losing much fewer now than I ever have. Mostly when CO'ing or washing I guess.

I find when I'm stressed that I really start to lose hair. But since I've been supplementing with vitamins, greens, etc., it has dropped considerably.
