View Full Version : *Newbie* Greetings!
Phyllislechat September 26th, 2003, 06:04 PM Hello everyone, I'm new here. Tonight I have hair that is only 5 1/2" long at its longest layer. It's blonde, highlighted, 1aFii. I am hoping it'll be down to my shoulders by next year at this time. I love reading about long hair experiences, and can hardly wait till mine has grown out. I'm taking supplements MSM, Vit C, Hair Formula 37. I just bought a Mason Pearson brush to use on my poor little layers. I have some super pure Olive Oil to use to moisturize my hair with every other day or so this chill season. Then I'll get Jojoba.
I have big plans for healthy hair in my future. Thank goodness my hair is in good shape now. I'm thinking about using Lush henna on my hair, but am not sure if I want to risk losing interest in keeping the color up every 6-8 weeks. Any thoughts? It would be red, which I love and have had before.
Thank you for posting such great information and pictures. I have learned a lot already.

bellawave September 27th, 2003, 04:46 AM Welcome! You'll find plenty of folks here growing out from short hair. My layers were about your length when I started about 6 months ago. :D
Madeleine September 27th, 2003, 05:24 AM Hi Phyllis, welcome :)
I looove henna, both the colour and the strength my hair gets from it. I don't think it's such an ordeal once you find a routine that works for you. It does take a couple of hours usually, but it doesn't have to be too messy.
I henna about every six to eight weeks and sometimes use temporary chemical dye in between just for fun.
Henna won't give you roots like other dye cause it always fades a little (although it will definitely become permanent with repeated applications on the length).
I'd just be worried about those highlights - it's generally not a good idea to do chemical services after henna. Sometimes it won't take or the outcome might be unpredictable. So if you're planning to let the highlyghts grow out anyway that wouldn't be a problem (after a strand test of course to see how your highlighted hair likes the henna), but if you want to keep them up I'd advise against henna.
On my HP (www button below) there's a henna article and a couple of links you might find useful.
Dianna September 27th, 2003, 05:39 AM Welcome, Phyllis! :D Glad you're here, and it sounds like you're off to a great start already.
Phyllislechat September 27th, 2003, 07:45 AM Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes! I've been lurking for a while, and did some research, so knew about some of the good basics. I'm not planning on highlighting my hair after using Henna, so it should be all right. Madeleine, your henna article is wonderful! So helpful.
I will be measuring my hair at the same time every month, so will be able to chart how much it grows in a year after about six months. I hope to get a good 1/2" a month. My first trim is pencilled in for November, will see if I really need it. Hopefully, I can find a stylist who knows how to work on long hair, or better yet, has it herself/himself.
akwill823 September 27th, 2003, 09:07 AM Just saw your post and wanted to drop by and say HI!!! And, we will definitely be keeping tabs on each others hair :D

Pixna September 27th, 2003, 11:54 AM Hi, Phyllis!! If you want to grow your hair long, you've come to the right place. WELCOME!!
MemSahib September 27th, 2003, 02:37 PM Welcome, Phyllis. We're glad to have you. Your hair is only a little shorter than mine was a couple of years ago when I decided to grow it out. Even with trims, you'll be surprised how quickly your hair becomes long enough to put in a bun or French twist. We're the same hairtype, too, so maybe we can learn together.
Poledra September 27th, 2003, 02:40 PM Welcome to the family !

Phyllislechat September 29th, 2003, 11:09 AM This is so exciting! I started my hair journal, and have been eagerly reading posts about hair problems/resolutions, so feel at home already. It is so encouraging to hear that others have been where I'm at today. Thanks for all the support! :D
Tomb Raider September 29th, 2003, 11:11 AM Chiming in late here, but wanted to welcome you, Phyllis! :)
seabear September 30th, 2003, 03:42 AM I'm a little late, too, but....Hi, Phyllis! I'm another "grower-out-er" trying hard to maximize both growth and health of my hair. This is a very welcoming community, you will love it!
Axium September 30th, 2003, 04:16 AM Welcome! You've obviously done your homework!
pgw September 30th, 2003, 04:20 AM Just wanted to pop in and add my WELCOME to you as well.
Something that I've found that helps me is taking a picture every six months or so. Then when you think you're making absolutely NO progress, just take out the pictures and see how far you've come!
edited because I can't spell correctly
Honey Mane September 30th, 2003, 04:34 AM Hi Phyllis!
Welcome to the group! I excited to see/hear about your growth progress!
Have a great day,
Phyllislechat September 30th, 2003, 08:03 AM My husband is going to take a digital photo of my hair today, so I can begin my photo journal. I figured every six months would be enough to show progress.
akwill823 September 30th, 2003, 09:44 AM Hi Phyl,
You know me, I can't wait to see pics of your hair =)
