View Full Version : New here: hello :) Q about biotin

I hope this is on the right board!

Is taking biotin enough to promote healthy and speedy hair growth? I just want a little help with my hair's health so I'm not looking to pull out the big guns (at least not yet). Will biotin on it's own do anything? And how much is needed? Thanks! :)

Hi, and welcome! :)

I don't know if you take any supplements at all right now, but I'd rather invest my money in a good multi and some B-vits instead of biotin. Biotin didn't agree at all with my body and cycles, so I felt scared and stopped taking it. A little biotin (200 mcg) is in my multi, and that's enough for me.

But someone else might have another opinion and experience :)

Hi everyone and thanks! :)

Gabiwags, what's a jammie? My name is Jami and I'm from Chicago, but hopefully it doesn't refer to something bad! lol

Hi Chicagojami!! Welcome! Gabi's referrence to 'jammie's' isn't bad, so don't worry! It's just short for 'pajama's'. Something I know I'm quite attached to, hehehe. ;)

I agree with the multi-vitamin recommendation and would suggest adding MSM. It's known to really reduce shedding, and keeping those hairs longer means your hair has the opportunity to grow longer. If you aren't familiar with MSM, do a search on it and you'll come up with lots of info on it. It's a sulfer based supplement.

Again, Welcome!

I personally love what Biotin does, but at least in my experience it's best combined with a multi and/or a very well balanced diet. I currently take a One-a-Day and Country Life Maxi Hair, and find it's a nice balance for overall health. Since most vitamins and minerals are best absorbed in combination with other vitamins and minerals, I leave the balancing act to the suppliers. The combo works for me anyhow :D

one or two "little guns" won't hurt...? :)

I'd have to agree with what the others on the board are saying. Personally I've never taken biotin on its own. I've always taken it in conjunction with a host of other good supplements with good results.

Welcome Chicagojami, I take 3 grms of biotin a day, and have really noticed an increase in my hair growth. I used to get (maybe) 1/4 inch a month, and now I average at least 1/2 inch, sometimes more!!! I also take msm, so I'm not 100% sure what's working, but something is!!!

Welcome to the boards, Lady!
Glad you joined us!

I'll have to ditto the daily supplement and healthy eating
instead of the Biotin.

I used to take Biotin, but I soon changed that to an herbal
attitude checker called Nature's Calm.
I needed peace more than long hair, LOL.

well, i take 1000 mcg of biotin a day. i don't take any other vitamins because i'm just too busy right now(and i have a lack of money from being a college student) to get any other vitamins. i eat, well, OK, but not the healthiest diet. i HAVE seen an improvement in my hair growth from just taking biotin. The amount i am taking is 333% of the recommended daily amount(which i don't like doing) and the next time i buy some it will be a smaller dosage. anyways, biotin is quite cheap but i agree that it is probably best to take it with either a multi vitamin or a balanced diet. good luck!

Hi Chicagojami, and welcome!

I don’t know about biotin only, being “enough” to promote healthy and speedy hair growth.

I started off with a multivitamin and biotin, and I have gotten great results. My hair has gotten thicker and fuller. It does wonderful things to the skin and nails!

Success!!

Welcome to LHC Jami. Nice to have you here. I don't know about biotin alone. I don't think it would hurt since it's a water soluable supplement. I take it in addition to my multi and Country Life Maxi hair. I know I am growing better hair and my nails have never been better. I think I am doomed to a half inch a month growth no matter what I do. I would suggest a multi with biotin in it if you don't want to take too many tablets and capsules each day.

Hello, Chicagojami!! I don't have anything to add about the supplements -- good advice you've already gotten. But, I would like to ask you about your name. Please tell us more about it -- what it's based on, what it means to you, etc., as it's so unusual!! :D

I think if I only wanted to take one thing a day I would choose a good multi that had Biotin included. Personally I take extra Biotin in addition to what comes in my multi. The most important thing though (IMHO) is overall lifestyle and a good diet :)
