View Full Version : Swearing off oils.

My hair cannot take oils. Any kind of oils. Carrier oil, Euro oil, Essential oil. My hair hates them all.

I havn't been using oil for awile. Instead, I was using conditioning treatments and I've started misting. My hair wasn't crunchy or dry at the ends anymore. Of course I have to fix whats not broken and I decided to put a few drops of Lavender EO in my mister. Within days my hair was a nasty mess. It felt rough, it crunched, and I'm talking forests of split ends. The oil had to be doing it.

Today I washed with MM in distilled water. Distilled water is new for me. Then I did a white vinegar rinse and applied a leave-in conditioner. I wrapped it up when it was damp enough in a bun. I'm just hoping that the hair I decribed will be gone.

I've learned my lesson. Oil will never touch my hair again. No matter how many posts I read talking great results. :D . The funny thing is my skin loves oil. So, I'll just enjoy oiling my skin and simply conditioning my hair from now on.

Don't feel bad, Sunblondee. My hair doesn't do well with oils either. I always expect miracles but it never does a thing except make it crunchy and a tangled mess. What is your hair type? I have baby fine hair. I look like a grease monkey after I apply oils. It doesn't matter if it is just a teensy little bit. Very yucky.

Also, the natural poos/conditioners do nothing for my hair either. NO slip at all. I'm starting to wonder if cones aren't necessarily a bad thing?

I love Phyto's Jojoba and cornflower shampoo and I just bought some Jason's Jojoba conditioner. I will try this out tomorrow.

Ashlie.........still searching for "the" perfect product

That's kinda funny that it would act the same way to essential oils as well as veggie oils... essential oils are more like uh, solvents than oils, really. But I admit that I don't like oils all that much on my hair, either. Haven't noticed bad things - just don't like the feel for some reason.

While we're on the topic of EOs I had a question.
I was thinking about putting some in my mister as well. Partly for my less than perfect ends and partly for fragrance. I was just wondering if you can use any scent or if certain ones aren't good for your hair.
I would ideally like to use Jasmine but I want to make sure it won't make it brittle or dye it pink or something.
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience Sunblondee. Certain techniques aren't for certain people I suppose. ~Alex*

i'm sorry your hair doesnt like oils. mine loves it and even, punishes me if i dont supply oil to it regularly :?

each hair is unique and what works for others dont work for us. i'm glad you discovered what your hair didnt like. i had used herbal essences for a year and nutrogena for another year - without realising that my hair hates them.

Alex, sandalwood, ylangylang, rose, rosemary, lavender are all good for hair. i havent read anywhere that jasmine has beneficial properties for hair but i dont think its destructive either.

I can usually use pure oils on my hair - mostly as conditioenrs - though I can use just a little bit on Jojoba Oil for shine / anti-frizz....

Oil Treatments usually make my hair a mess - I guess it must the 'other stuff' that is added to the treatments.

I absolutely LOVE Jason's Jojoba conditioner!!!! Does wonders for my hair - smells nice, too!

Hi, Ditto what Accolady said!

Sunblondee, I left oils behind too! The only time I would oil my hair now, with veggie oils is if I was to go swimming in a chlorine pool.

Jasmine oil is usually, unless you're lucky enough to be able to afford the pure stuff, a tiny bit of oil of jasmine in a carrier oil. This is also true of rose oil, which is my daily use oil. The carrier oil I've seen most is jojoba oil.

Hi, Ditto what Accolady said!

Thanks!
I don't think they're horribly damaged or anything (my last trim took care of that), I just haven't felt like they're as soft as the rest of my hair and I want to get them up to par.
But the jasmine part is completely for fragrance. I absolutely adore the smell...

That's what I figured after seeing a tiny bottle of 100% pure jasmine oil going for somewhere up in the $80 range.
Does that dilute the scent very much? Or does it still smell strongly of jasmine?
I don't wear perfume because either I forget to put it on or they're so strong they make me dizzy. I figure that this way I can make it as soft or potent as I want and if it's in my mister I can't forget! ~Alex*

The jasmine fragrance oil I have smells veeerrrry strongly of jasmine. A little bit goes a long way. Jasmine is such heady stuff, much as I love it, if there's too much, it'll make me nauseated.

$80 for a small bottle (10 ml) is probably a retail price, but still, that's a darn good retail price. I can get jasmine 10 ml for about $40 wholesale, and rose 10 ml for $50 wholesale. Still... it's expensive, considering other essential oils that size usually cost under $5 (wholesale)
