View Full Version : are scrunchies tacky? clips?
share801 February 27th, 2003, 11:04 PM I am not exactly the height of fashion but I am wondering if you all think scrunchies are tacky for casual type things. (Not clean-the-garage casual, but not dressy). Do you think claw clips look better or worse? Do you think a ponytail needs adornment? Or is an elastic enough? I have such thin hair, it gets overwhelmed with some of the ornaments out there, and it has not yet reached BS length and cannot bun yet. Not sure I ever will - afraid it will be too thin. Am at a real frustrating growing out stage, so need some new hair toys or ideas to get me through.

I think the only thing tacky about wearing things in
your hair is the person making the tacky comments.
:D
I'd say that unless you are wearing a simply outrageous
hairdo, say, showing up at a PTA meeting wearing a Pebbles
and BamBam pony sticking out of your head with 65 Fruit Loop
colored beads hanging from it, you should be fine.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but as long as the
style works for you and you are comfortable with what you
see in the mirror, go for it!
I can't think of any hair toys I've seen that I don't like.
I have my preferences for what works for me, but for the
most part, my thought is that women wear either what they have,
what they can afford, what looks good or what is within reach.
Then there are those like
me who don't give a rat's banana if her claw clips are all different
colors, because I was in a hurry and not having a fashion
awareness moment.
:D
Melusina February 28th, 2003, 03:04 AM LOL!!
What she said.

Oh, almost forgot!
I read that you mentioned not being able to bun
as your hair is not yet BS length, but ah, yes you can, dear!
Hollie! You're needed here, your buns are needed!
Hollie very nicely puts her hair in a bun and I don't recall
exactly how long it is (growing fast!) but I believe she
even tried hairsticks...
Whooo Hooooooooo, Hollie, and anyone else who has
pics of BS or shorter buns, this lady needs your assistance.
:D
Carolyn February 28th, 2003, 06:40 AM I don't think scrunchies are tacky at all. I think black velvet is especially sophisticated. I think scrunchies are just fine. I like mine to coordinate with my outfit if possible. I have at least a half dozen black ones in various fabrics. And a couple in a biegy taupe color that is color to my hair color and blends in well. I think scrunchies are just fine. I wouldnt want to give them up! :D
smythe_michael February 28th, 2003, 06:53 AM velvet scrunchies.....definitely o.k.

I don't think scrunchies are tacky at all, and a ponytail is fine for a casual look. I use claw clips all the time to put my hair up; it's easier for me than making a bun. I think that choosing the right hair accessory depends on what you'll be doing and wearing. What I dislike is seeing is someone wearing ratty old clothes with a huge fancy bow in their hair. Why bother with nice hair ornaments if you're not going to dress the part? Sorry if that offends anyone, it's just a pet peeve of mine.

snippet February 28th, 2003, 10:38 AM I don't like claw clips or banana clips in public. I haven't seen one done in good taste where I live. It is a very popular hair toy and everyone has them in their hair though.
Maybe I'm just jealous, I can't get a clip to hold all my hair in for any length of time. I do use one in the shower though. I have it going horizontally near the crown instead of vertical. That way it catches one loop of hair and some head hair.
Scrunchies are good. They come in all colors, sizes, fabrics and thus are a joy to see. I have bunches and wear them when the mood strikes. Most times I try to match to my socks, but I've got some favorites that just scream to be used every now and then.
Sheba February 28th, 2003, 10:53 AM I'm with Snippet... scrunchies, claw clips and banana clips remind me of the 80's... I never wear them. But, to each his own, as they say.
:D Sheba
Heidi February 28th, 2003, 01:53 PM To each their own, I say, as an ecclectic dresser myself, but I am amused by the corporate women I see downtown in their expensive suits and trendy hairstyles topped off with a big plastic claw clip. Scrunchies are indispensible...but I am again amused when I see more of them on people's wrists than in their hair! :D
Karrinne February 28th, 2003, 01:59 PM I have approximately 45 scrunchies in every color, fabric and print you can imagine. I wear them in my hair every day (not all 45 at once, lol) but cannot imagine life without them. And I am, let us say, an undignified woman of over 40!!!!!
Anyone dares tell me they are tacky, I'll tell them to kiss my foot!!!!
Accolady February 28th, 2003, 02:42 PM Anyone dares tell me they are tacky,
I'll tell them to kiss my foot!!!!
You go, girl!
At least you were nice to use the foot word.
I have to restrain myself from stating otherwise.
As LisaJaney would say...BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
Nutswmn February 28th, 2003, 04:14 PM i love my scrunchies. but i have seen some on people that look very tacky. the scrunchie just didn't look right on them. kinda hard to explain. i guess you just have to have the right attitude to wear them and not have them look "kiddie".
gabiwags February 28th, 2003, 04:34 PM To each their own, I say, as an ecclectic dresser myself, but I am amused by the corporate women I see downtown in their expensive suits and trendy hairstyles topped off with a big plastic claw clip. LOL Heidi - I almost always have one around my wrist. I think they are a necessity of hair at times. But I admit unless they are very well put together they make me groan :suspect: it's from years of watching figure skating and gymnastics...:DD...g
Madeleine February 28th, 2003, 05:33 PM I am not exactly the height of fashion but I am wondering if you all think scrunchies are tacky for casual type things. (Not clean-the-garage casual, but not dressy).
I don't think scrunchies as such are tacky at all. I don't wear them cause I never wear styles that require scrunchies or elastics (apart from night time braids where I prefer elastics that aren't too bulky to lie on).
IMHO it all depends on the hair (style), the scrunchy, and how well it matches the rest of your clothing.
Do you think claw clips look better or worse?
Again, depends. Most claw clips look cheap IMHO. But I have seen seamless hand sawn ones made of thick, rich material, extremely well made and very smooth. About US$50 for the larger ones, but they looked like they'd keep a lifetime, and they would match a sophisticated outfit if you wanted to wear a claw clip style.
I personally started staying away from hinged hair toys for all styles that are possible to do otherwise. Hinges eat hair if you're not careful.
Do you think a ponytail needs adornment? Or is an elastic enough?
Depends, LOL ;)
I usually prefer classy hair toys, high quality, but not too fancy/colourful/elaborate. But that's just my style, the same goes for clothes and shoes or jewellery. So if I was wearing ponytails I'd probably use something like a smallish silk or velvet scrunchy, or a silk ribbon, in a colour that matches my clothes. If I was only using an elastic it would have to be something special (if we're still talking work/going out styles, I'd certainly have no problem going grocery shopping with an elastic I paid $2 for a bag of 100 ;))
I have such thin hair, it gets overwhelmed with some of the ornaments out there, and it has not yet reached BS length and cannot bun yet. Not sure I ever will - afraid it will be too thin.
Oh, don't be afraid of thin hair in a bun! It can't possibly be thinner than mine, and I wear a bun all the time. The secret is not wrapping the bun too tight (but not too loose either or it will unwrap), and securing it with something that won't pinch it flat so it isn't too tiny. I've had the best success with hair forks. My current favourite is made of clear plastic ...
http://haarkram.e-something.de/images/Hairpix/clearfork.jpg
... but I just ordered some hand made wooden two and three prongs that I love already before I even tried them.
Thick, bulky bun covers can make a small bun look bigger too:
http://haarkram.e-something.de/images/Hairpix/barette3.jpg
In case you have trouble getting a bun to hold, remember this should be even easier with thinner hair, because you can wrap more turns with less length. Hey, I can even do a figure eight with bra strap length hair (but it's so pathetic that I never wear it)
Which technique are you using? Have you tried higher buns?
I'm with you on the issue of thin hair being overwhelmed by some hair toys. Most of mine a medium/small sizes that are designed for partial updos on normal hair. They work and look just fine.
Am at a real frustrating growing out stage, so need some new hair toys or ideas to get me through.
Do you have a Ficcare (or a good fake one)?
Have you tried french twists? I love them, because they provide such a nice head shape, and they look good with thin hair too. Easiest to do with a ficcare, but my favorite look is a twist held with combs:

Hey, Shari!
Given your 'reason" for asking this, I am better able to answer your question!
I often find scrunchies overwhelming for the ends of my braids, because my ends are thin, too. I found some "small scrunchis" but I don't know where, or when, but they were ok on the ends of my braids. Otherwise, I don't put anything on the ends except my "tie". Sometimes I try to match my outfit, other times I try to have the tie blend in. Depends on my mood. I think both look nice.
I also think that shorter hair looks better with "things" on the ends of the braids than longer hair (and probably MUCH safer too)! ;) When my hair was BS length, I use to put pins (broaches sp?) on the end (attached to the elastic). This looked really nice, but once your hair is long enough to swing around over your shoulder, this can become VERY dangerous!
As far as jaw clips, the only ones I think that look tacky are the "teeny bopper colored ones" on an older woman's hair. I'll use myself as an example: I look TOTALLY stupid wearing a turquoise cheapo jaw clamp, but don't think a tortoise looking one looks bad at all (FYI I'm going to be 40 in July).

Madeleine . . . you'd better hide those clear forks/pins because KarenMarie just might hop the next flight to Germany to get those from you!!!!!!!!!!! I think that is the size pin she has been dying for! AND they have an unusual shape to them!!!
VERY nice! :)
Heidi February 28th, 2003, 06:07 PM Oh Madeleine, what breathtaking pictures--not only of your toys, but of you and your hair! I love that second ornament...is that made of wood?
Could I gush anymore? I'll blame it on a glass of wine...
merryrose31 February 28th, 2003, 06:17 PM I have mixed feelings about clips and scrunchies. I agree with nutswmn that for some reason, some people look good in them and others don't. I fear that I fit in the don't category. I haven't quite figured out why they work for some and not others, yet, but I do think it has sometimes has to do with age. And, I also think it has a lot to do with what you are wearing at the time. And, it might also have to do with the color of your hair and the color of the clip or scrunchie.
I wear scrunchies and claw clips mostly for at home, working out, etc. If I wear a ponytail out in public, I wear it low on my nape and cover the elastic with a short scarf (which also hides the fact that my ponytail circumfrance is only 2-2 1/4 inch right now (hoping that it will thicken when shorter layers get longer, but not holding my breath).
My favorite updo right now is the one that Madeleine gave instructions for, in which you pull your hair up through your ponytail, a la topsytail, and then bring the hair up and over and fasten with a comb. You don't really see the hairtoys in that hairdo. It makes my thin to nomal hair look fuller, and it has a romantic look to it. Next to that, I wear variations on a French twist.
My hair is still only eighteen inches -- a couple of inches below shoulders, so I hope to broaden my updo capabilities as it gets longer.
merryrose31 February 28th, 2003, 06:21 PM Where do you find plastic hair forks and hair forks shaped like those? I ordered a wooden one with a celtic medalion in it for my daughter for Christmas, but I've never seen one with the shape of yours.
Has anyone else seen them in the States? :?:
Carolyn February 28th, 2003, 06:45 PM but cannot imagine life without them. And I am, let us say, an undignified woman of over 40!!!!!

LOL Karrine! You tell 'em! I probably wouldn't have said "foot" tho lol.
Madeleine March 1st, 2003, 09:25 AM Hi Heidi and Merryrose,
Oh Madeleine, what breathtaking pictures--not only of your toys, but of you and your hair! I love that second ornament...is that made of wood?
Thank you for your compliments! :-)
Yes, that second thingy is a wooden stick barrette. I bought it at a local fair ground together with some hair sticks by the same manufacturer, and everyone here liked it so much that I just ordered the second box of stuff for LHC members.
Fell free to join in case there is enough interest for a third group order some time (This (http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/message?forumid=235459&messageid=1043680558) is the link to the original thread that started the second order).
Where do you find plastic hair forks and hair forks shaped like those? I ordered a wooden one with a celtic medalion in it for my daughter for Christmas, but I've never seen one with the shape of yours.
I got it from the hair toy rummage box at a local drugstore - made by Zenner hair toys. It was the only one they had, but I found a contact e-mail address on their web site, sent them the pic and asked for sources of supply. I'd buy a few more of those pins too if I knew where to get them. They were pretty cheap too.
If they reply at all I'll let you know!
Anne March 1st, 2003, 12:14 PM I love scrunchis, I have many, I don't think they're tacky at all BUT it does depend on the scrunchi and the person who's wearing it. I think it can look wrong on some people.
merryrose31 March 2nd, 2003, 08:22 AM look best in dark hair.
Axium March 2nd, 2003, 02:50 PM Scrunchies - tacky. Okay for little girls. I'm amazed to find anyone here agrees with me, and happy to see that some do! On clips, if they're plastic, the less plastic showing the better.
On toys you might try, check out sticks, Ficcares - the height of good taste in hair toys, and hairpins that are subtle. On the other hand, if you go all out with the "fun" sort of approach, like my friend who is over 30 yet wears ponytail holders with giant beads, a clip-on red silk rose, and Weird Emily clips, then you bypass the tacky factor completely and emerge with a different kind of style.
Definately start gathering toys and playing - it'll spur you on to greater hair care and growth!
Keep us posted on things you find that you like, and by all means, wear whatever pleases you, no matter what anyone's opinion is. :D
QueenHarpy March 2nd, 2003, 07:45 PM Something like this is really an individual choice IMHO. I personally think it isn't any given hair toy that may be tacky per se, but it all depends on the material it's made of, the personality or style of the person wearing it, the situation, and on and on. I personally believe in each person finding their own personal style and tastes though, so I'm not the type that really cares too much about what's currently in style or not. Perhaps I'm not the right person to answer then
I say if you think you look good in scrunchies, claw clips, or even a bone in your hair you should sport 'em with pride 8)

share801 March 2nd, 2003, 08:28 PM Thanks to all who answered my question! I am not very good at working with my hair and tend to rely on things I can master - like big ol' scrunchies. Some of those 'dos are pretty complicated for me. I keep trying.

Accolady March 3rd, 2003, 03:06 AM .
Hello Shari,
If you enjoy scrunchies, by all means, wear them.
For many, they are quick, easily color coordinated with
what you wear, gentle on the hair, etc.
They needn't be candy colored pink, many are
made with silk, satin, etc.
I recently purchased a hand crocheted scrunchie with
wooden colored beads from one of our members by
the name of Skeeter. I'll post a picture of it in my hair
when I receive it and then
we'll see how tacky it looks. ;)
Many who judge what you have in your hair tend to forget
that not everyone can afford the finest of accessories.
I like to treat myself to a nice hair toy of upper class now
and then, but for many women, myself included, a scrunchie
is a good hair item just about everyone can have. I personally
have a basket full of every color imaginable in many various
fabrics.
Also, not all of us work / live / play in an elevated class.
I live in the country, work in the garden most of the day
and need a quick updo which allows me to move freely.
If I had to worry about a $37.00 hair toy on my head that
wouldn't be very sensible. A $1.00 scrunchie would be
much more appropriate with a T-shirt while running to Wal
Mart for potting soil, yes? LOL. Then if I'm going to dinner
I'll wear my fancy toys. There's a time and a place for each of
my hair toys.
But as for your hair, in my opinion it isn't about what
other people think, it's about what you like, what treats your
hair well, and what you like the look of.
Much like Queen Harpy stated, if you want to wear a bone
in your hair, do so, and do it well.
Wear it with pride.
Don't let anyone's opinions change what you feel
is a safe hair toy.
Best to you, and feel free to scrunchie away, many of us do!
:D

Whoa.........Ya know, I almost didn't read this thread. LOL The one drawback of these types of boards -- you don't know if you're being called on in the middle of a thread. :D
Uhhhh...anyway........yeah, I was able to do buns a few inches ago. Now, they're not holding. :( :( I can make the bun, BUT, when I pin it, it just flops away from my head. Very frustrating. However, a single hairstick seems to be going well, but not for use if I'm going to be doing physical labor of some sort.
My hair is just grazing 24".
Jonobie March 3rd, 2003, 09:49 AM I'd buy a few more of those pins too if I knew where to get them. They were pretty cheap too.
If they reply at all I'll let you know!
It looks a lot like the pins made by the Good Hair Days company -- see the pics below:
http://www.goodhairdays.com/simple-elegant-chignon-pins.htm
They seem to make most things in clear & in the tortise shell finish.
I'm guessing that these can be gotten at Sallys (not so helpful for you, Madeline, but maybe one of us here can help send you some, if you're interested).
Cheers,

I'm not really desperate for them at the moment (I mainly like a second one in case I lose/break the one I have, because I wear it a lot). I wouldn't have e-mailed Zenner if it wasn't for KM and Merryrose wanting some as well - but I guess you just showed the two of them some options that are more easily available for them :-)
Love My Cop April 12th, 2006, 06:16 AM I dont lreally care for scrunchies, however I do wear them alot, because they are the only hair thingies that dont snag or rip my hair
Juniper April 19th, 2006, 09:47 AM Scrunchies and claw clips CAN be tacky. I don't think that either one is particularly decorative, but that both can be a good, sensible hairtool for making an attractive hairstyle. So no glitter, no loud colors, and choose a size that is porportional to your hair.
Big, floppy scrunchies look ridiculous in my fine-ish, thinnish, straight-ish (at least where it comes out of the ponytail) hair, but I found 2 sets of 6 quietly colored ones (taupe, black, denim) at the dollar store and they work fabulously! I love how they never pull my hair!
Neoma April 19th, 2006, 12:04 PM I bought black "mini" Scruchies (the real deal) that have a little bit of a sheen to them. They're not "satin," but they're dressier looking than plain ol' cotton. I love them -- they're just perfect for making little, low ponytails. I work in a very corporate environment, and I don't think that these are out of place at all.
I do, however, agree that some Scrunchies and clips look really casual and can't be dressed up no matter how one tries.
Arianwen April 19th, 2006, 12:25 PM I have tons of scruchies, in all sorts of colours and materials. I love them. I wore a big yellow one yesterday, to match my Brasil jershey I wore to Portuguese class. :D
Viva la Scrunchie!

OOOOHH! I am going to try a bone for chinese buns! LOL
LuzEstrella April 19th, 2006, 12:56 PM I like scrunchies just fine. I prefer them in a nice material. After all, a tacky scrunchie = tacky hairstyle.
I also like the claw clips if they blend in with your hair. Nothing wrong with that.
Children look best with the loud colors and glittery type stuff in their hair. They can get away with anything !!!
teela1978 April 19th, 2006, 01:00 PM I think I overdid scrunchies... I have this odd hatred of them now. Why? Don't really know. I do remember friends pulling them out of my hair in high school because it "looked better down" and such nonsense. Thinner ponytail holders are harder to pull out when the owner of the hair is unawares!
Although I'm pretty sure no one I know would do that to me nowadays.
spiraleeee April 19th, 2006, 01:08 PM I hope they are not tacky! The price of a ficarre is my entire clothing budget for a year.
That said, its not all that hard for me to hide a clip in my hair. I don't really mind if they show, so long as they don't contrast too much.
gaiasbutterfly April 19th, 2006, 02:21 PM I have one particular scruncie that goes everywhere with me, if it's not in my head it's on my wrist or in my purse, but always somewhere nearby, even if my hair is another updo, it's still close. I've always gotten compliments when i wore clips, I always by them in either black or brown so they are closer to my hair shade. I don't think i've seen tacky, but I could show ya, my MIL sent some old hair stuff to my girls and one is this bow from the 80's the big puffy multicolred metal back bow, it's almost as big as girls heads, I was gonna try to wear it for halloween but didn't have any clothes that would date me that far back.
RedNCurly April 19th, 2006, 05:12 PM I love my scrunchies. :inlove:
johnnystiletto April 19th, 2006, 05:54 PM I only use scrunchies for around the house, when i work out, and for lazy days. I work in a financial office, so i usually keep my hair up in a bun, with one of -judy-'s hairsticks, or these clips from Sally Beauty Supply:
http://jfrost.smugmug.com/photos/65341274-L.jpg
They're super cheap and disappear in my brown hair. I do dislike giant claw clips; most of the people around here wear them in a 'big messy log' style, complete with gigantic poof bangs.
clover April 19th, 2006, 06:01 PM sorry! let's just say that I think that other hair accessories are less tacky than a scrunchie. just my opinion. i'm sure different colors (neutral) and less poufiness make them quite stylish and useful. but hey, the 80's are coming back! have you seen the leggings phenomonon?
johnnystiletto April 19th, 2006, 06:02 PM sorry! let's just say that I think that other hair accessories are less tacky than a scrunchie. just my opinion. i'm sure different colors (neutral) and less poufiness make them quite stylish and useful. but hey, the 80's are coming back! have you seen the leggings phenomonon?
just don't get me started on the culottes!
Chromis April 19th, 2006, 08:02 PM I like scrunchies for ponytails, though I wouldn't use them on the end of a braid. I find that the thinner ponytailers just seem to roll out of my hair. (I ought to go find some reviews of the sport ones, they looked scary and hair pulling at the store though). I'm not a fan of claw clips, but then again, the only ones available here are big plastic ones... I used to wear one when I was younger...but that was back in the late 80's early 90's...
The only thing I would find *truly* tacky would be if Madonna cones made a resurgance!
zule April 20th, 2006, 12:33 PM Check out my age. I can wear anything I please because I've paid my dues, and then some. I don't care what anyone thinks at this stage in my life. Don't wait until my age to feel this way. Do it now!
I wear high and low ponytails with medium or huge scrunchies (mostly cotton velvet or silk velvet); France Luxe cascades (what I'd call a near banana clip); new to Ficcares; hair sticks; hair forks; slides...you name it. I wear gypsy clothes, tailored clothes, schleppy clothes--there's no real dress code where I work. Not that I'd pay much attention. I'd skate the edge of the ice, if I had to. But I don't want a job like that ever again, unless up against the financial wall. Then you do what you have to do to keep a roof over your head.
You can try to fit in with someone else's sense of style, or you can create your own. As long as you're comfortable in your own skin, anything you wear works. It's a reflection of you.
Vegas Girl April 20th, 2006, 06:55 PM I was wondering about the claw clips. I personally love them. Sometimes they are just the quickest way to get my hair out of the way. I heard a group of teenagers dissing them in the hair aisle at Walmart a few weeks ago. But I'm not going to pay too much attention to what teenagers think (not including the very mature teenagers here at LHC). I figure if claw clips were THAT out of style, none of the stores would sell them anymore. You certainly don't see stirrup pants in any stores, do you? I feel a little self conscious when I wear them out but I don't know why...I was in the nail salon the other day and counted four other women wearing them!
