View Full Version : Profile pix and avatars

I guess y'all noticed that the server is struggling lately. One way we can all help is if we host profile pictures and avatars elsewhere (like we already do with sigs) rather than upload them to LHC .

From Friday (we're giving 72 hours notice) you will need to host both elsewhere as Stephanie will be changing the setting so any still on the LHC server then will be removed.

Thanks for your help!

For free image hosting here are some sites:

Imageshack (http://imageshack.us/)

Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/)

The Image Hosting (http://www.theimagehosting.com/)

There's a lot if you just do a GIS for free image hosting (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=free+image+hosting).

Beatnik Guy,

Thanks for the notification. I made the changes.

How do I know who's hosting my pictures? I have a photobucket account with both pix there, but I don't know if that's where LHC is reading them from. Help!

saracuda, your signature's source is your Photobucket account. This is good, because signature photos tend to be larger than avatars. You don't have a Profile photo, but these will have to be likewise hosted elsewhere. Your avatar appears to be hosted here, but one of the mods determined that even if avatars are hosted elsewhere, the LHC software permanently remembers them rather than pulling from the original source for each post. This is unfortunate, but still, with the changes in a few days, avatars and profile photos will have be hosted elsewhere, just like the sigs.

What about if you loaded the link into the avatar?
My avatar is some artwork that is hosted on the artist's website. Did it get copied to TLHC's website when I entered in the link or not? TIA

I've notified a few people of the change, however I think it might be useful for it to be sent via a mass PM. A lot of people, since the server is being overloaded, only check the bare minimum, ie. PMs and subscribed threads. I know I only saw this thread, because I've been able to get on okay today.

Just a thought. *flowers*

My profile pic appears to be loading off the LHC server, although I know I entered it as a URL. Will the server revert to using the URL on Friday?

Also, any consideration of disabling smilies for the time being? (No idea of the amount of overhead they cause)

So the software will not be in place until friday as well?

I don't know much about this sort of thing, but wouldn't that be "hotlinking" which is banned on at least one other forum I belong to?

Sooo...
I tried to link with both of them (finding a new profile pic because old one isn't in photobucket anymore ) but if I view properties it's got the LHC link instead of the photobucket one. What's up with that?

I think the only thing I had on LHC was my avatar and I uploaded all my avatars to photobucket yesterday. Is that correct? All the stuff in my siggy comes from PB, as do the photos in my journals and on Callie's thread.

I had my ticker removed! They said it was too big. SO I found a smaller one but I see other people with HUGE images...

I don't want a big image just wondering who decides what size siggy certain people can have? I loved my old ticker...but it was 1/8 inch too long but really skinny

TIAMember images appear to be getting saved to the LHC server right now (there's no choice with Sig Photos - the system is not saving them). Yes, host the avatar elsewhere. The same process should be used for Profile Photos. Steph will be adusting settings so everything will have to be hosted elsewhere. *crosses fingers* It's best for everyone to change beforehand, rather than get stuck doing it later or possibly losing images altogether and trying to find or recreate them (such as individualized "dollies"). Simply download the images, then upload them to your photo web accounts elsewhere.

We have considered disabling smileys...

As for who decides about sizes, the mods did this, but everything requires Stephanie's approval, and she can change anything she likes.

Is it true that animated smileys are more "demanding" than static ones? although the animated ones are such fun, if this is the case maybe a few static ones could be retained and the animated ones removed.

Keenkitty

I agree. I like static smiley I don't think we need animated ones.

Is it Bandwith that e need or funds? I could maybe donate some small fundage I'm really poor but I would throw some money toward this if it would help.

I find even though I only make 18000 a year between my DH and I we still manage to have more money around because we don't eat out, we cut our own hair, we rent movies and books from the library, we are vegan, and our cats like to tinkle on pine pellets which we get free from a lumbar yard. (And it doesn't smell at ALL)

Its weird. Our friends have 50,000 yearly incomes and are living in the same sized aparment as us and drive crappier cars and never have money.

I don't get it.

I would be THRILLED if Chris and I could make 20,000 a year! We could be SO COMFORTABLE!

I'm struggling just to get a pic on the signature! I've got it "hosted" on photobucket, so it shouldn't be a problem here, and I've tried to reduce the size - right now it "claims" to be at 25%, which should be pretty small, but it shows up as this huge gargantuan picture!

Mind you, the tatting looks really great in this big picture, but it's waaaaaay far away from the "Signature" limitations newly posted!

Why am I so useless on a computer???

July 20th, 2006, 10:41 AM
Peggy photobucket always starts out looking huge when you preview it but when you actually post it it always shrinks to size when it appears here. I fought with the stupid thing 3 times before I figured that one out.

I get an "invaild url" error. The site I'm using starts with something other than http://www. It uses http://webpages. and I think that is the problem.

There are bigtime drains, though, but we can't shut down some of them. Anything that causes the system to store, pause, and work are the biggies. Grabbing images from a stored database every time the images are shown is one example, and this is what is being addressed now because if the system doesn't have to store that information, the system gets spared to that degree.

Hi!
I totally missed this thread before, been busy with other forums. Anyway- I went to change my avitar and there was no place to put the url to change it... I used image shack... and it is something like 80x under 80 pixels... and I have been on this site for more than 2 months... so how to fix?

OK I give up!

I put my avatar picture on photobucket (got an account etc.)

Now I tried to edit my avatar and my choices are NO avatar. Nothing else. I know it was a while back when I did mine, but I remember some choices and things where I could set what avatar to use.

Can anyone help.

Gladtobemom, DBF explained that Steph is working on the avatar settings. Obviously she has not finished working on them. You will hopefully be able to edit your avatar once she has finished.
Cheers!

On a forum this large, it would be difficult to police each and every person with a large signature, so they're probably just messaging people they personally see having too-large signature files. No one has time to scroll through every thread in the forums, looking for people with large siggies. ^_~ If you see signatures that are larger than the rules say, it might be beneficial to PM a mod to bring it to their attention.

Doh! I wish I had remembered to read this thread BEFORE trying to change my avatar. I had already read this and never realized it contained more info pertaining to the avatar thing, now that my avatar has disappeared, I suddenly remembered that I should check here. Well at least there will be avatars in the future. That's good to know.

Not that I have any patience or anything...........

Having no signature and no avatar is quite sad, I hope things get fixed soon.

Though at this rate, I will probably be able to make a signature, and be less sad about the avatar thing. :P I really just want a picture of my hair attatched to each of my posts in some way. (Without be obnoxious about it)

Good luck with getting everything happy and working again!

You know, I go for 6 or 7 months without changing my avatar but as soon as I find out we can't do it I'm suddenly in a hurry to change it. Is there a name for this kind of problem? Something like Murphys Law or along that line?

AAHH! My avatar is gone! I was trying to delete the previous one so that I could upload one from photobucket instead of hosting it on this site and now the system won't let me do anything. I am avatar-less. I'm sure the lovely mods will fix this soon, until then, I remain without my eye.

As was highlighted several times in the thread, avatar uploads are currently disabled for ALL members. Stephanie's working to get everything restored to normal, but remember she's one woman working alone with a real life to tend to, so sometimes LHC's gonna take a back seat for her.
