View Full Version : Height and Hair Length
Willswalk July 9th, 2006, 08:09 PM Ok so I've been looking through journals today and I've noticed something, this doesn't happen very often, and that something is that while a lot of people here have more inches of hair they are taller so it doesn't look like they have as much:suspect: , but the shorter you are the longer your hair looks:blueeek: . And here all my life I've wanted to be taller....
her.covering July 9th, 2006, 08:18 PM That would seem to make sense... esp those with a long torso. I have a long face shape too so to even get to chin length seems to have taken longer.
Darian Moone July 9th, 2006, 08:24 PM You're right...this is one instance where I'm really, really glad to be short! :)
snowbear July 9th, 2006, 08:29 PM Pegs and I were talking about this earlier. She and I were both at 28", yet her hair looked longer. Turns out my torso is longer than hers, so my hair looks shorter.
For me, I'm short-waisted, so the body lengths will be easier than the leg lengths.
AngelinaDiva2004 July 9th, 2006, 09:07 PM Makes sense! I'm 5'7" with shorter legs and a taller torso, go figure. No wonder it seems to take so long for my hair to grow!
Kuchen July 9th, 2006, 09:55 PM Five eleven here and engaged in a long, long, loooooong wait for BSL. I think, as siad here before, shoulder to BSL is the worst stage, but worse still if you have a long neck and upperback!
sapphire-o July 9th, 2006, 09:57 PM Not just height, proportions matter, too. My DH still hasn't got to chin length yet. I was looking at him and thought it must be because his chin is very long. Then I realized he has almost no neck. So his chin length will also be his shoulder length. :D He'll get two milestones at the same time. :) I also pondered about bra strap length. Maybe for us old moms who breastfed babies it's harder to grow to BSL due to sagginess? :D
BorknagElf July 9th, 2006, 10:11 PM I always knew there were lots of perks to being short! ^_^ I don't know if my torso is long or short or average proportion-wise, though. But my hair is 29" and it reaches my waist.
NuclearMosquito July 9th, 2006, 11:06 PM I'm close-to-normal length on my torso, but my legs and arms are short. I also don't have much neck, and..erm.."the girls" sit low on my torso, too. What does this mean? Guess I'll go from classic to thigh to knee to ankle quickly, but right now, it takes longer to just reach BSL!
Rosetta July 9th, 2006, 11:48 PM Now I see why it takes so long for me to grow... I'm about 5.74" (175 cm), & have a long neck, too; although I don't think my torso is unproportionally long, but as I'm tall overall, it follows the back is longer than shorther people's... I'm at 28" now (or my longest strands are), and just passed BSL "properly". And I see some people with short necks & backs at waist at 28! Unfair... I've always wanted to be shorter, although people keep telling me how good it looks to be tall. Doh.
Sapphire-o, breastfeeding doesn't automatically mean sagginess... (Actually, I think that's a myth.) And I think BSL means where your bra-strap is, not the rest of the bra... And that's unlikely to move down, isn't it.
Sian100 July 10th, 2006, 12:02 AM Five eleven here and engaged in a long, long, loooooong wait for BSL. I think, as siad here before, shoulder to BSL is the worst stage, but worse still if you have a long neck and upperback!
Hello, height twin! :)
Exodus July 10th, 2006, 12:10 AM But then again, certain lengts look much better on someone who is long. I hate being short. My hair has to be really long to look long on my. Always been envious of those whose hair are long already at BSL. And waistlength and tailbone length also looks much better on tall people. Iīm 160 cm and I donīt have a neck and donīt have a a long beautiful waist..
Reaching hair-goals faster.. Donīt think itīs worth it because my lentgh makes me feel so ugly in other ways..
ruirui July 10th, 2006, 12:28 AM Heehee, for once I'm happy that I'm short! :silly:
I did remember surfing around once and noticing 29" is BSL for some people, while it's waist for me.
Sian100 July 10th, 2006, 12:32 AM waistlength and tailbone length also looks much better on tall people.
Says who?
Rini July 10th, 2006, 01:17 AM Willswalk....just have to say.......*thud* You're hair is STUNNING!!!!! I can't stop staring!
Steve<3 July 10th, 2006, 03:50 AM I'm 5'9". BSL (well according to the bra I am wearing right now) is about 25-27" on me. Now I'm at 37" which is about tailbone. My legs are longer than my torso. There will be a long wait from classic to knee, and then knee to ankle.
Taipa July 10th, 2006, 04:26 AM I'm 5' 3" tall, and my 21" hair is only a couple inches above BSL.
I have a short torso, but long (for me height) legs. It's terrible finding bathing suits that fit, because unless the straps are adjustable, the crotch hangs down at least an inch or two below where it's supposed to be.
I'd rather be taller, if I could pick one. Hair will grow, and I could handle waiting an extra year or whatever to reach my waist-length goal, but I'd prefer to fit clothing properly ^_~
butterflygyal July 10th, 2006, 04:58 AM I am 5,5" with a long torso. Hmmm. This could be the problem. BSL for me is 25". As long as it is growing I guess I am fine.
lizzernog July 10th, 2006, 05:02 AM I have short everything. Short torso, legs, arms. Though my face is alittle bit longer. I'm somewhere between 4'10 and 5'0 so it seems like my hair grows fast. At 33" my hair is pretty much at tailbone.
Unnamed July 10th, 2006, 07:03 AM I'm about 5'9", and quite badly proportioned: Long neck, short short torso, and loooong legs.
BSL is about 23-24" and waist is about 27-28". And I hit classic length at about 38".... I'm currently several months into the long wait from classic to knee, and let me tell ya, it feels like it's not going anywhere.
But, while my hair looks long in pics (a bit past classic), if I actually get one that includes all of me my hair looks rather short...cuz my ends only hit about halfway down my body and cut me in half.... I haven't even posted a full pic of me because I look so very odd.
brunette July 10th, 2006, 07:16 AM Wow I'm at least the third 5'9"er on this thread and the others I've seen have quite similar hair to me! :waves:
I'm classically proportioned too so no long/short torsos here :silly:
summr July 10th, 2006, 07:24 AM Interesting, alot of petites have a long torso and short legs. I'm 5'1 and I have a short torso and long legs: bsl is 24 and waist is 27- tailbone is 29.
I measured my legs and my torso and found out if my torso were as long as my legs I'd be 5'9.
DarthCynthia July 10th, 2006, 07:24 AM Heheheh! Yup :D I'm around 5' 10"... I'd LOVE to have ankle-length hair (it's currently close to mid-thigh... another inch or two to go possibly)... but... who knows if I'll even get close. I guess I'll see....
SmileCat July 10th, 2006, 09:06 AM Willswalk....just have to say.......*thud* You're hair is STUNNING!!!!! I can't stop staring!
I second that!
Hehehe, it's times like these where I like being short. The journey from tailbone to classic was, well, short. I'm just under 5ft so the distance between each marker is only a couple of inches. Sometimes it even makes up for not being able to reach all of my kitchen cabinets.
~*Trish*~ July 10th, 2006, 09:15 AM Its so funny to see the variations of lengths. I'm 5'6" and for me BSL is 27 inches, waist is 31 and classic is 43!!
julya July 10th, 2006, 09:32 AM I'm about average height 5'5" and my hair just reaches waist now that it is 33". I do have somewhat short legs though.
Xanthippe July 10th, 2006, 09:45 AM I guess I will have less time to wait for the leg milestones too. I'm another long torso but short person - only 5'2'':
BSL is something like 26''
Waist is about 30'' (We mean natural waist, right? Not where we wear our pants?)
Classic would be about 43''
And knees is only 49 inches!
Haha, SmileCat, I guess it does make up a little for always having to use a stool.
UP Lisa July 10th, 2006, 10:32 AM I'm 5'2". BSL is about 24" on me. Waist will be 30 or 31.
mira-chan July 10th, 2006, 10:45 AM I'm 5'4" (and little bit...less than 1/2). My torso and legs are about equal.
The start point of 28" is between BSL and waist for me. (can't measure right now what BSL and waist is on me, bun is in the way.)
Tailbone is 39"
Classic is about 42" on me.
I have long arms, so fingertip length witll take a while longer to get to, but it will be close to knee from that.
I have a long neck, but I got though that stage when I was 7.
Lady Godiva July 10th, 2006, 10:55 AM I'm 5'-8", and I'm betting that floor length hair on me takes longer to detangle than on someone 5'-0" tall. :? I think those last 8 inches suffer more. They're older, look way too thin, IMO, and they look dry, too. If I were shorter, I'd be trimming all that off, and it would look more even and more nourished. As it is, I have to be even more patient and can only hope the ends thicken with endless microtrims and keeping up that super-duper careful detangling.
Yes, I have someone in mind here whose spectacular hair also is floor length and looks thicker than mine at the ends.

Ah! If you were still in the UK/London I could have sent you to Top Shop or Long Tall Sally! H&M and Zara can be pretty long too.
Lexy July 10th, 2006, 11:17 AM It's also not easy to find jeans/slacks that are long enough! Where the heck to you other tall women find yours without selling one of your legs to afford them?
Well, for now I buy jeans with the super low waist. They hang down and end up being long enough. The last pair I bought were Levis. However, I'm afraid I'm approaching too old to wear that style, and then I don't know what I will do. I have noticed that pants cuffed to mid-calf are becoming popular. Lady Godiva, perhaps you and I can make a club and wear that style all year 'round.
This thread is very enlightening for me. I never understood how everyone grew such long hair so fast. But BSL for me is waist or even tailbone on you more vertically conservative people, so that explains a lot.
eucalyptus July 10th, 2006, 11:42 AM I'm about 5'4", so considering that the average height for women is 5'6", I guess I'm slightly short. I don't really have a long torso, but I do have some very significant scoliosis, so maybe it would be longer? Anyway, my hair growth rate changes so much it's hard to say whether it grows fast or slow. One month it grows a full inch and the next it grows half an inch.
knee nuh July 10th, 2006, 11:45 AM mmm I've noticed that, like I had classic length hair as a little little girl but i'm sure that would be waist now (my next milestone!)
zaftig2k July 10th, 2006, 11:52 AM I'll add something else to the visual mix. As a much larger woman, my hair tends to look shorter than some who's hair is the same length as mine and is thinner than I am.
Here's as example. A very thin woman may only need a blouse that is 28" long (from the shoulder seam) to come to hip length on her. But I need a blouse to be 34" long (from shoulder seam) to come to hip length on me. (This from being a clothing designer for plus sized women.) :)
So, I end up actually needing more hair length than a thinner woman, for us to look like our hair is hitting the same place on our bodies...even if we were the same height.
So, add that to the height thing, and there is a lot of variance that causes things to look different on different people.
Poppy Seed July 10th, 2006, 11:52 AM I'm also happy to be short for that reason - but part of me wants the actual physical INCHES to measure. I can't easily see how long my hair appears for myself, so I'd rather know I have INCHES...
Rapunzelwannabe July 10th, 2006, 12:22 PM I don't know, I have a friend that's about 6 inches taller than me, and she has body-wise the same length hair, but at least 6 more inches, and it looks like she has longer hair. Maybe between people with a small height difference it'd be more apparent, but with me and her, she has long hair, and I don't seems to be the consensus.
HairColoredHair July 10th, 2006, 01:21 PM I'm 5' 5"... and just about average in proportions, so it's all about even on me.
My Mother (who wants to grow her hair now :rockerdud ) Is only 5' 3" and is a petite on top and a tall on the bottom, so the back lengths should go fast but leg lengths would be painfully slow.
HerbalAnnie July 10th, 2006, 01:26 PM Measuring in at 5'10". I'd been pondering the height issue, too. Being tall makes your terminal length look shorter. If I reach waist, I'll consider myself lucky.
On the other hand, I once worked with a young lady who was about 5'3" and had beautiful almost waist length hair. It was absolutely gorgeous, and she even had natural blonde streaks in her hair. When she walked away from someone, you saw this beautiful cloak of silky hair, and legs. I was (still am) so envious of her hair.
Speedbump July 10th, 2006, 01:57 PM I"m 5'8" and I lose 4 inches (at least) to curl. I'll have to have 40 inches of hair to look like someone else's 30 inches.

Finding jeans for me (very short) isn't easy either. I still buy children's jeans (though they don't fit my body shape because I am not quite shaped like a child anymore) ;)
In the inspiration of this thread, I was actually talking about the height thing with a friend of mine who said I finally had a perk to being so tiny
Gladtobemom July 10th, 2006, 04:13 PM I'm almost 5'8. I used to feel really tall. Now it seems just above average because young women seem to be somehow taller.
I notice that 31 inches doesn't get me much past BSL and on some 30 inches looks almost waist length.
Never thought about it before, interesting. I wonder how much torso length can vary. What is the lenght versus height ratio. I wonder if it's fairly constant or varies alot. How do you measure a torso?

5' 10" here, and I got my tall jeans at Lane Bryant (http://lanebryant.charmingshoppes.com/storelocator/lb/index.asp), then after I lost weight at New York and Company (http://direct.where2getit.com/cwc/apps/w2gi.php?&client=newyork&template=search)
silkenblacksea July 10th, 2006, 05:42 PM I'm 5'10" and a half and BSL on me is around 27 and a half". I'm *blessed* with a long torso and long legs. So, anyway you slice it, all my goals seem to take forever. But I do enjoy being tall, and once the length comes in, I'll be doubly *blessed*(trying to be positive as I wait the long wait:rolleyes: )
DarkIvy July 10th, 2006, 06:30 PM I'd never really throught about this...
I'm 5'5. BSL is just about 24 inches on me, waist is about 30 inches.
TheSpottedCow July 10th, 2006, 08:25 PM im 5'8. my legs are on the long side but im not particularly out of proportion either. right now at 29" im past bsl but not at waist yet, i still have a few inches. my goal length (i just measured yesterday, and i dont remember the measurement i put in my profile haha) on me is between waist and tailbone. right around my hips and where the top of my pants hit in the back.
as for pants... i wear a 34 or a 35 inch inseam. thats generally a long in most stores that carry them, and also more expensive brands make their clothes with a long inseam, i assume since its easier for someone who spends a lot of money on pants to have them tailored shorter, and those brands want to cater to as many people as possible. unfortunately, ive also noticed i cant find many stores that sell cheaper jeans that have the right length or fit for my body. oh well.
chitraa July 10th, 2006, 10:09 PM hi,
quite correct, short heigth makes hair seem longer, chitra

I'm 5'5. BSL is just about 24 inches on me, waist is about 30 inches
Interesting. I'm 5'2", and these length are the same for me as they are on this 5'5" person.......
styg July 11th, 2006, 12:43 PM i'm 5'7" (or 5'8" not sure). waist is a bit under 30", tb 38 - 39" and classic would be around 44".
Maluhia July 11th, 2006, 01:05 PM I'm 5'4", BSL will be 26 inches and waist length will be 33.5 inches.
Taipa July 11th, 2006, 03:55 PM I'll add something else to the visual mix. As a much larger woman, my hair tends to look shorter than some who's hair is the same length as mine and is thinner than I am.
This is also true for tall vs short people. A tall person and a short person might both have waist length hair, but if one's waist is at 30", and the other's waist is at 36", the taller person has more length overall, even though in comparison they have the "same length" of hair.
wonderlywroughte July 11th, 2006, 03:59 PM I'm short short short, with a short torso. So, my 46 inches of hair, while almost being knee length on me, is nowhere near that on a taller person.
chitraa July 11th, 2006, 05:36 PM short height- one can reach gols like midback, waist, tialbone faster! - chitra
Medievalhair July 11th, 2006, 06:40 PM I'm around 5'4, for waist length is 30in. I have an average torso, with long legs. although my goal is knee length.
JoieBruce July 11th, 2006, 08:41 PM I'm 5'2" (being generous) and although I know I'll hit goals faster, I'm not sure it's worth it. I would like to be able to change lightbulbs (we have 9ft ceilings and I'm too short with a stool), retrieve things from my cabinets, dust the ceiling fans....You get the idea. Buying pants would be easier and happen less often as I tend to wear out the last few inches on the cuff by walking on them. Capris would actually be an option. On the upside though, my boyfriend is always willing to help, and I love snuggling into his chest when I hug him. I guess it's ok. Ask again in a year when my ten year old stepdaughter is taller than me (her shoesize is already bigger).
Joie
Curlz&Waves July 11th, 2006, 08:49 PM I am 5'1" and I have been told by countless people that because I am so short that the long hair makes me look alot younger than my true age (33) which is good for me. lol When I pull on my curls it just passes my hips. I have an odd shape though... I have a long torso with super shorty legs, which might account for why I am always tripping over stuff. :misskim:
trolleypup July 11th, 2006, 09:26 PM I'm 5' 10" or so.
Shoulder is 21"
BSL is n/a
Waist is 36"
Hip is 38"
Tailbone is 44"
Classic is 48"
Knee is 60"
Floor is 78"
So I get the whole "gosh that person's hair is really really long[1]" and then realize that that is only in proportion to their body height. Weird.
[1] this equals "longer than mine" :silly:
chitraa July 12th, 2006, 11:22 PM hi
hair length remains same irrespective of height, but goals are body lengthwise set like wasit tc its faster to attain, but if set length wise 25", 30" etc then no
chitra
RaineLovesJ July 13th, 2006, 12:00 AM BorknagElf,
What you said hit home with me because I'm sitting at 29" and it's only BSL for me. Height does have a lot to do with it it seems.
